2013 PONY League World Series Game Recaps

Once again this August, every game of the 2013 edition of the PONY League Baseball World Series can be heard here on the MSA Sports Network. Here are the daily recaps from from Washington, Pennsylvania through the Semifinals on Wednesday, August 14th.

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 14th:

Los Mochis, Mexico 11 – Chesterfield County, Virginia 0
The Mexico champions blasted three home runs in the first three innings, rolling to an 11-0 win over Chesterfield Co., VA, clinching a berth in Wednesday's World Series championship game (7 pm). Javier Lopez hit two solo shots, his fifth and record-tying sixth home runs of the series. Winning pitcher Luis Antonio Acosta hit a three-run shot in the third, part of a six-run frame that put the game virtually out of reach. Chesterfield County had two hits in the first inning and only three more baserunners the rest of the game. Los Mochis went in front on an rbi single by Divier Lara and a run-scoring grounder by Humberto Moreno. Irving Ruiz doubled home a run in the second, followed by Antonio Lopez' rbi single. In the fourth, Antonio Lopez and Acosta pushed the margin over the 10-run rule with rbi singles. Acosta got the win, allowing four hits and one walk while fanning six. He's allowed just one earned run in 12 innings of work. Javier Lopez had four hits in the game and now has 14 in the series, tying a record set just a year ago.

Okinawa, Japan 11 – Bayamon, Puerto Rico 10
The Asia-Pacific champions built a 9-2 lead, then had to rally in the final frame, as Okinawa, Japan downed Bayamon, PR, 11-10, to claim the first spot in the PONY League World Series championship game. Tatsumi Higashionna's rbi single ended the game, scoring Tomoki Nako from third with the winning run. Baymon took a 2-0 lead in the first on Mario Feliciano's two-run home run. Okinawa scored four in the bottom of the inning, three on Kenta Nikawadori's home run, the first of the World Series for the A-P squad. An unearned run in the second and four more in the third pushed the score to 9-2. The only rbi during the stretch was earned by starting pitcher Yuma Tamanaha getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. The Caribbean champions started their comeback in the fifth, Feliciano doubled and scored on Rafael Lugo's bases-loaded sacrifice fly. Alexander Vazquez homered to make it 9-6 after five. Kristopher Gonzalez hit a two run home run in the sixth and a balk tied the game later in the inning. Bayamon took a 10-9 lead in the seventh on Feliciano's solo home run, a record-setting sixth in the Series. Winning pitcher Kaito Miyagi, who gave allowed the tying and go-ahead runs to Bayamon, led off the winning rally with a groundball single to center and moved to second on Tomoki Nako's pinch-hit bunt single. An error on Takato Nakamoto's sacrifice bunt loaded the bases. An errant throw on a grounder allowed Miyagi to score, tying the game, setting the scene for Higashionna's game-ender. Each of Okinawa's four pitchers was charged with at least two earned runs. Kidany Salva took the loss allowing six runs but just the game-winner was earned. Bayamon got homeruns in the Series from eight different players.  Nikwawadori's home run was the 41st of this World Series, setting a new record. Bayamon's 17 total round-trippers tied the all-time mark set by Humacao, PR in 2003. Feliciano's new HR total broke the mark originally set in 1957 by Jerry Register, Lufkin, TX and matched three times since, most recently by New York's Jean Carolos Rodriguez (2003).

TUESDAY, AUGUST 13th:

Bayamon, Puerto Rico 2 – Okinawa, Japan 1
A two-run sixth inning propelled Bayamon, PR past previously-unbeaten Okinawa, Japan, 2-1, Tuesday night, forcing a deciding 'If Necessary' game for the berth in the World Series final. Okinawa took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Tomoki Nako singled and scored on Takato Nakamoto's base hit. The Asia-Pacific champions loaded the bases in the fourth but could not add to the lead. Bayamon had a runner thrown out at the plate in the third and stranded runners in the fourth and fifth. Javier Sanchez singled to open the sixth, was sacrificed to second and moved to third on a throwing error. Jose Mendez bunted to score Sanchez and reached on the fielder's choice, then stole second and scored on Wilberto Rivera's base hit. Alexander Vazquez got the win, holding Okinawa to one run on 10 hits while striking out four. Tomoya Yara, the second pitcher of the game for Okinawa, took the loss. Kansei Ashitomi had a double for the Asia-Pacific squad, the only extra-base hit of the game. The teams meet Wednesday (10 am) with the winner playing for the World Series title.

Los Mochis, Mexico 4 – Hilo, Hawaii 3
Two seventh-inning squeeze bunts gave Los Mochis, MX just enough lead to oust West Zone champion Hilo, HI, 4-3, Tuesday afternoon. The Mexico entry led 2-1 heading to the seventh. Javier Lopez, who homered on the first pitch of the game, singled to center with one out, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. Gerargo Quinonez punt down a perfect suicide bunt, reaching first on a fielder's choice and ending at second when the ball was dropped at home. Quinonez, who drove in the go-ahead run in the fifth with a single, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on Alonso Villarreal's squeeze bunt. Hilo scored twice in the seventh without a hit, using three hit-batters, a walk and a two-run fielders' choice to pull within 4-3 before a groundout ended the game. The West Zone champions failed to score in the second despite four hits and a walk. A double-play cleaned that situation up for Los Mochis. Taylor Mondina doubled home the tying run in the third, scoring Daylen Calicdan who doubled one out earlier. Miguel Sanchez got the win, working 6+ innings, allowing seven hits and striking out four. Makoa Andres took the loss for Hilo. Los Mochis advances to Tuesday's Division Championship game against unbeaten Chesterfield County, VA (8:00 pm), needing wins tonight

Bayamon, Puerto Rico 11 – Mon-Yough, Pennsylvania 7
Led by four home runs, Bayamon, PR got past Mon-Yough, PA, 11-7, eliminating the Host Area champions. Sebastian Toro capped a four-run first for the Caribbean entry, blasting a two-run shot. Mon-Yough used three walks, a balk and a two-run double by Tyler Seliga to get to within 4-3, but that was as close as they could get. Mario Feliciano hit a two-run home run in the second, his first of two on the day and Sebastian Toro delivered an rbi single to restore the four-run margin. Toro added a two-run single in the third to make it 9-3. Back to back solo shots by Jose Miranda and Feliciano and two more bases runners aboard put the 10-run rule within reach but was never crossed. Mon-Yough made a run, getting a two-run double from Charlie Varriano in the sixth and Jake Callaway's two-run home run in the seventh, his second. Javier Sanchez went the distance to get the win, charged with six runs and five hits. Mon-Yough used five pitchers in the game with starter Jason Cerniglia taking the loss. Bayamon takes on Okinawa, Japan in the Division Finals Tuesday night (5:30 pm), needing to beat the Asia-Pacific titlists twice to reach the World Series Championship game.

MONDAY, AUGUST 12th:

Chesterfield County, Virginia 3 – Hilo, Hawaii 1 
Hilo, HI's Edgar Barclay threw a no-hitter and struck out a World Series record 20 batters in the game, but Chesterfield County, VA turned three seventh-inning walks into runs as the East Zone champions advanced to the Division Finals with a 3-1 win over the West Zone titlists.  Barclay struck out the first nine batter of the game and 15 of the first 17, carrying a 1-0 lead into the seventh.  After one out, JT Creed walked, stole second and third.  Will Edwards walked, stole second and a wild pitch scored Creed, moving Edwards to third.  Edwards scored on a wild pitch.  Eric Hubbard walked, stole two bases and scored on a passed ball.  Barclay struck out the final two batters, completing his seven inning no-hitter and breaking the all-time strikeout record set by Carolina, PR's Carolos Rodriguez in 1972.  Hilo took a 1-0 lead in the third when Kegan Miura walked, moved to third on Shaun Kurosawa's double and scored on a passed ball.  The West Zone squad ran into several out in the early part of the game, including a 1-2-5-2-6 double play with the bases loaded in the second inning.  Chesterfield County centerfielder Reed Raikes also cut down a runner at the play trying to score on a fly ball out.  Ryan Bergenhagen got the win, allowing just one run on two hits, putting Chesterfield County just one win away from the PONY League World Series championship game.  Hilo drops into the elimination bracket and faces Los Mochis, MX Tuesday (12:30 pm).  The winner plays Chesterfield Tuesday night (8:00 pm).

Okinawa, Japan 8 – Mon-Yough, Pennsylvania 7
Trailing 8-3 heading into the final frame, Mon-Yough blasted two home runs but fell one marker short as Okinawa, Japan grabbed a spot in the Division Championship with an 8-7 win over the Host Area champions. Okinawa took the lead with four runs in the fourth with a pinch-hit rbi double by Tomoki Nako, a walk, a two-run triple from Yuma Tamanaha and an infield error. The Asia-Pacific champions used a double, a walk, two sacrifice bunts and another rbi hit from Nako to build the lead to 8-2 after five. Mon-Yough plated an unearned run in the sixth. Jake Callaway, who homered in the first, led off the seventh with a double. An out later, after Jorday Zilka was hit by a pitch, Charlie Varriano homered to straightaway center. Jason Cerniglia followed with a solo shot to right. Timmy Labuda tripled and Eric Harkins walked. Kaito Miyaga took over on the mound, getting grounders to short and first to end the game. Tomoya Yara, the second pitcher for Okinawa, got the win for his three shutout innings. Miyagi earned the save. Mon-Yough's Anthony Winkler took the loss in relief of starter Ryan Weaver. Labuda was a home run shy of the cycle. Cerniglia and Varriano had two hits. Kansei Ashitomi's double tied the game in the first for Okinawa. Takato Nakamoto walked and scored on a wild pitch to tie it after three. Mon-Yough, who had bases loaded with one out in the third and did not score, drops into the elimination round Tuesday (10:00 am) against Bayamon, PR. Okinawa plays the winner of that game Tuesday night (5:30 pm).

Los Mochis, Mexico 8 – Paderborn, Germany 1
Alonso Villarreal held the European champions to one run on three hits and Javier Lopez homered for the third time in the World Series as Los Mochis, MX downed Paderborn, Germany, 8-1, in an elimination game. Guillermo Guerrero and Ivrving Ruiz each drove in two runs as the Mexico champions stayed alive in the bracket. Samuel Steigert singled home Paderborn's lone run in the second inning. Los Mochis tied it in the bottom of the frame on a Ruiz single, then scored six times in the third with RBI's from Gerardo Quinonez, Miguel Sanchez, and back to back run scoring doubles by Guerrero and Ruiz. Villarreal struck out six and coaxed 13 groundball outs in the seven-inning contest. Sanchez had three hits in the game, Ruiz two. Steigert singled twice for Paderborn. Los Mochis advances in the elimination bracket and will play the Chesterfield Co., VA / Hilo, HI loser Tuesday (12:30 pm).

Bayamon, Puerto Rico 9 – Brownsville, Texas 2
Kristopher Gonzalez homered twice, driving in four runs, and Kidany Salva tossed 4.2 innings of scoreless relief as Bayamon, PR beat Brownsville, TX, 9-2. Adiel Perez and Mario Feliciano also homered for Bayamon. Gonzalez' first round-tripper opened the scoring in the second inning, and his three-run home run, his third of the World Series, broke a 2-2 tie in the third. Brownsville had tied the game in the top of the third on Ivan Castillo's two-run single, the last batter faced by Bayamon starter Jose Mendez. The Caribbean champions got three hits and three RBI from Mendez.Feliciano added a double, Alexander Vazquez also doubled for Bayamon. Marky Ordonez took the loss Nate Reyna and Mark Martinez doubled for Brownsville. Bayamon will take on the Okinawa, Japan / Mon-Yough, PA loser Tuesday (10:00 am).

SUNDAY, AUGUST 11th:

Los Mochis, Mexico 16 – Washington, Pennsylvania 5
Los Mochis, MX scored five runs in the sixth inning, five more in the seventh after an 11 1/2 hour weather suspension, eliminating host Washington, 16-5. The Mexico champions got a pair of homeruns from Javier Lopez and a three-run shot from Alonso Villarreal, all in the late stages of the game, to cement the victory for Gerardo Romero. The starter pitched five innings Sunday, allowing just two runs and two hits, but was not eligible to pitch when the game was resumed due to PONY Baseball 40-hour rest rules. Lopez also had a single in the game. Miguel Sanchez had two hits including a double. Villarreal drove in four runs in the game. Washington starter Garrett Briant took the loss, allowing 10 runs Sunday evening. Briant stroked two homeruns in the game, three in the Series and was the recipient of the John D. Voytek Memorial Award, symbolic of the Host's leading batter. Kurt Adkins also homered for Washington.

Bayamon, Puerto Rico 17 – Bay County, Michigan in 5 innings
Kristopher Gonzalez and Jorge Matos each hit grand slams leading Bayamon, PR to a 17-2, 5-inning win over Bay County, MI, eliminating the North Zone champions. Gonzalez' blast followed a 30-minute weather delay and pushed the Caribbean champs to a 6-1 lead in the third inning. Matos was the ninth batter in the fourth when he hit his grand slam, the 42nd in the history of the World Series. Bayamon plated 10 runs in the inning to push the margin past the 10-run rule. Jose Miranda and Edwin Figueroa also homered for Puerto Rico to advance to an elimination game Monday (10:00 am) against Brownsville, TX.

Hilo, Hawaii 10 – Paderborn, Germany 0
Hilo, HI pounded home 10 runs on 14 hits to down Paderborn, Germany, 10-0, Sunday afternoon. The West Zone champions jumped in front with four runs in the first inning, Daylen Calicdan, Taylor Mondina and Trayden Tamiya with rbi hits. Gehrig Octavio homered in the second, then drove in a pair with a double in the fourth, closing the scoring. Eight of the nine Hile starters had hits in support of Makoa Andres efforts on the mound. The winner worked five innings, holding Paderborn to two hits, including a double by Linus Nixdorf. The Hawaiians advance to the Winners' Bracket final on Monday (8 pm) against Chesterfield County, VA. Paderborn plays in Monday's elimination round (12:30 pm) against the Los Mochis, MX / Washington, PA winner.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 10th:

Okinawa, Japan 5 – Brownsville, Texas 4
Hitless through five innings, Asia-Pacific Zone champion Okinawa, Japan scored four runs in the sixth to take the lead on the way to a 5-4 win over Brownsville, TX. The South Zone champions took a 2-0 lead in the third, Josh Alaniz scoring on Marky Ordonez sacrifice fly, and Jaime Gonzalez crossed on an errant throw on the same play. Losing pitcher Balta Guzman had faced the minimum 15 batters through five frames, but opened the sixth with a hit batter and a walk. Tatumi Higashionna and Yuma Tamanaha each singled to drive in runs to tie the game 2-2, and each scored on throws by Guzman. Okinawa added an insurance run in the seventh, the ultimate game-winner when Takato Nakamoto reached first, then second on errors, moved to third on a hit-batter and scored on Tamoki Nako's sac fly. Brownsville scored twice in the seventh and had the tying run on before a groundball double play put down the threat. Daisuke Okuma got the win in relief, throwing three shut-out innings, allowing one hit and striking out five. Tomoya Yara pitched the seventh to earn a save. Guzman was charged with five runs, four earned, one walk, two hit-batters and nine strikeouts. Brownsville's Ricky Ruiz had two hits, including a double. Okinawa moves to the Winners' Bracket final Monday (5:30 pm) against Mon-Yough, PA. Brownsville drops into the elimination bracket Monday morning (10:00 am).

Paderborn, Germany 8 – Washington, Pennsylvania 1
Thirteen hits produced eight runs as European champion Paderborn, Germany topped Washington, PA, 8-1, Saturday night. Ismail Ciftci had four hits, including a double, and drove in a pair of runs. Lucas Dunn doubled twice among his three hits and drove in two. Marvin Herrmann tossed seven innings for the win, allowing five hits, one of them a solo home run by Garrett Briant. Samuel Steigert added a two-base hit for the Europeans. Kyle Kelley took the loss, charged with all eight runs in five innings. Steve Schultz had a double and a single for the hosts. Paderborn takes on Hilo, HI Sunday (3:00 pm) in the West Zone champions' Series debut. Washington faces Los Mochis, MX in an elimination game Sunday (8:00 pm).

Chesterfield County, Virginia 3 – Los Mochis, Mexico 2
Chesterfield County, VA scored two unearned runs in the top of the seventh to beat Los Mochis, MX, 3-2, in an opening-round game. With runners at second and third and one out, trailing by a run, Colby Carnes lofted a flyball to right. Trey Ramsey tagged and scored, jarring the ball loose at home. When the ball rolled away, Eric Hubbard scored the go-ahead run. Stephen Baughan tossed a complete-game to get the win, allowing two runs and four hits over seven innings, striking out seven. Baughan singled home the game's first run in the sixth after Reed Raikes was hit by a pitch, balked to second and moved to third on a wild pitch. Los Mochis went up 2-1 in the bottom of the frame. Javier Lopez doubled off the fence in left-center and scored on Gerardo Quinonez' single. An out later, Quinonez scored on Antonio Lopez base hit. Luis Acosta took the loss, charged with three runs, just one earned, on five hits–all singles, a walk and two hit-batters while fanning 15. Two of the three free-pass runners scored. Baughan took a no-hitter into the fifth. Acosta carried a perfect game two outs into the fourth. Chesterfield County advances to a Winners' Bracket game Monday (8:00 pm).  Los Mochis drops into an elimination game Sunday (8:00 pm) against the Washington, PA / Paderborn, Germany loser.

FRIDAY, AUGUST 9th:

Mon-Yough, Pennsylvania 16 – Bay County, Michigan 14
The Host Area champions bashed five home runs, including two in the decisive seventh inning, as Mon-Yough knocked off Bay County, MI in Game Two of the PONY League World Series. The winners jumped in front 4-0 in the first and 6-3 in the second only to see Bay County plate the next 10 runs, including four on Skylar Manczak's grand slam, the 40th in the history of the World Series. Mon-Yough started back with three runs in the fifth, two on Eric Harkins' home run. Tim Labuda's three-run homer in the sixth tied the game at 13-13. Winning pitcher Cory Saus hit a solo shot with one out in the seventh and Jodan Zilka added a two-run blast three batters later. Saus, the third pitcher of the night, worked 2+ innings, allowing just one run on two hits. Rayn Weaver came on to get a strikeout and a double-play ball to end the game. Marcus Miller homered for Bay County, part of his three-hit night. Cody Freed took the loss for Bay County. Mon-Yough is off until Monday (5:30 pm) against the Okinawa/Brownsville winner. Bay County drops into an elimination game against Bayamon Sunday (5:30 pm).

Brownsville, Texas 13 – Bayamon, Puerto Rico 6
Marko Ordonez homered and drove in four runs leading Brownsville, TX past Bayamon, PR 13-6, in the opening game of the PONY League World Series. Ricky Ruiz struck out 13 batters and scattered six hits and added a three-run homer to get the win. The South Zone champions used a three-run third inning to take the lead and scored seven runs in the seventh to put it away. Nick Montemayor drove in a pair of runs for Brownsville. Alejandro Alonzo had three hits. Mario Feliciano had a home run, a double and four RBI for Bayamon. Kidany Salva had two hit, including a double. Javier Sanchez took the loss, allowing four runs, three earned, over the first three innings. Brownsville faces Okinawa, Japan Saturday (8 pm) in the Winners' Bracket. Bayamon faces the Mon-Yough / Bay County loser Sunday (5:30 pm) in an elimination game.
