Here are five athletes to watch at Thursday's WPIAL track and field championships at Baldwin.
Mackenna Orie, Hempfield, junior
This rising star has a chance to win the Class AAA shot put and discus. Orie, whose sister Samantha was the WPIAL shot put champion in 2017, has the top throw in the WPIAL with a heave of 43 feet, 10 inches in shot put. In the discus, her throw of 136-8 ranks second behind returning WPIAL champion Jena Reinheimer of Butler, who has a throw of 137-7. Orie beat Reinheimer at the Baldwin Invitational.
Hunter Robinson, Avonworth, senior
Robinson won the 100-, 200- and 400-meter runs in Class AAA as a junior. She has the top times in the 200 (24.40) and 400 (56.20) this season, but her sister, junior Hayden, has the top time in the 100 (12.13). Hunter Robinson is not running the 100. The Robinsons also are on Avonworth's 400- and 1,600-meter relay teams.
Ayden Owens, North Allegheny, senior
The Southern Cal recruit won the 110- and 300-meter hurdles and the long jump titles as a junior. He has the top times and jump in WPIAL Class AAA this season. His time in 110 hurdles is 13.87 and the 300 hurdles 37.33. His leap in the long jump is 23 feet, 8.25 inches.
Brenna Cavanaugh, Bentworth, senior
This Bearcat jumper will be trying to defend her Class AA 100-meter hurdles and long jump titles. Cavanaugh has the best times this season: 14.94 in the 100 hurdles and 18-4 in the long jump. She has the second best mark in the triple jump of (37-8). Franzi Nace of Quaker Valley has the top jump of 38-6.
Jacob Shedd, Franklin Regional, senior
Shedd finished second in the Class AAA triple jump in 2017, but the senior has won every meet this season. Shedd's mark in the triple is 45-5. He's looking to surpass the mark heading into the PIAA meet. Can he dethrone North Allegheny's Auden Owens in the long jump? Shedd's best jump is 23-8, a quarter inch behind Owens.
