A scoring milestone came and went with little fanfare, and Geoff Helm liked it that way.
Helm, a senior basketball player at Greensburg Central Catholic, discovered Saturday he had scored his 1,000th career point two games ago.
The milestone happened during a 64-48 home loss to Clairton on Tuesday.
Nobody had been adding Helm’s total, but a review of his points — prompted by a reporter’s inquiry — revealed he had eclipsed 1,000.
The 6-foot-4 Helm scored 405 points while playing at Blairsville. He transferred to GCC and has 623 points in one-and-a-half seasons.
He had 25 points in Friday night’s 62-54 win over St. Joseph in Carbon, extending his career total to 1,028.
“I’m happy I found out the way I did,” said Helm, a Shippensburg recruit. “Because, honestly, I’m not the player who cares about getting theirs. I just try to put my team in the best position to win.
“It took a lot of hard work, putting shots up every day, long hours in the gym after practice. And it’s not all my doing: I’m thankful for my unselfish teammates who create shots for me in the games, whether it’s setting ball-screens, stagger-screens, anything to help me get the ball in my hands.”
