The drought is over.

For the first time since 1994, a span covering 25 years, Brentwood has won a section championship in girls basketball.

The Spartans defeated Ellis School, 43-37, in a tough, grind-it-out battle Monday night to clinch at least a tie for first with Serra Catholic in Section 2-2A.

It was Brentwood’s 10th win in a row, and 10th consecutive section victory.

The Spartans improved to 16-3 overall and completed section play at 11-1. Serra Catholic (14-4, 9-1), which on Monday defeated Riverview, 39-29, has two section games remaining.

The Brentwood girls celebrated senior night and were paced by senior guards Anna Betz and Natalie Murrio, with 17 and 12 points, respectively. Betz netted 11 after halftime.

Sophomore point guard Natalie Jasper peppered in a game-high 20 points for Ellis School (14-6, 6-5). All of Jasper’s points came in the first three quarters.

Senior guard Katharine Ference chipped in with 11 points for the Tigers.

The 2018-19 section title is the 13th in school history for the Brentwod girls basketball program.
