Westmoreland athletes of the week: Greensburg C.C.’s Geoff Helm, Greensburg Salem’s Megan Kallock

Geoff Helm

School: Greensburg Central Catholic

Sport: Basketball

Year: Senior

Claim to fame: Helm, a Shippensburg recruit, scored 30 points to lead Greensburg Central Catholic (12-6, 7-3) to a 68-57 win over Leechburg on Jan. 29. Helm is averaging 17.7 points.

“Last week, I went right at them off the bat. My shot came later in the game. I was just taking what the defense gave me. As a team, we are really coming together and mending together. I trust my teammates. That’s one thing you need to do when you want to win,” Helm said.

What made you commit to Shippensburg?

I went on a lot of visits over the summer. When I went to Shippensburg, they really treated me like I was part of the Raiders family already. When I stepped on campus, I knew I wanted to be there and get a great education. I’m looking to major in business.

What does it mean to reach 1,000 points in your career?

It’s a really big milestone, but I think of it as one of many goals I set for myself. I was excited, but I really want to win. I want to go to WPIAL and states. I’m trying to put my teammates and my team in the best position to win.

What’s the team’s mindset in the final week of the season with playoff positioning on the line?

We are really focused. We’ve had a lot of long practices, and we’re preparing hard for the upcoming games. We want to finish strong as we head into playoffs. We want to win out but take it one game at a time. We want to focus on the little things.

What do you want to be remembered for when you graduate?

I want to be remembered as a good person, great teammate and a hard worker.

What’s your favorite part about the Super Bowl?

The game itself. I really enjoy watching football, getting together with the family and having good snacks. I like the big-time plays on the big time stage.

Megan Kallock

School: Greensburg Salem

Sport: Basketball

Class: Senior

Claim to fame: Kallock, a Saint Vincent recruit, scored 35 points, but it wasn’t enough as Greensburg Salem (10-9, 6-6) lost 76-58 to North Catholic in Section 1-4A on Jan. 31. Kallock, who is averaging 25 points, scored 21 in a 73-19 win over Highlands on Jan. 28.

“We played as best as we could. They have a bunch of good players and shooters. We need to let it go. Our performance got us hyped for the games for this week,” Kallock said.

What made you commit to Saint Vincent?

I wanted to do what’s best for me. I was also looking at Washington & Jefferson and Grove City. Saint Vincent is close to home, and I love their coach and team. I’m really excited for my future there. I want to major in early childhood education.

What does it mean to you to be second on Greensburg Salem’s all-time scoring list?

It’s really exciting to know my hard work has paid off. I know what I’ve worked on has come to an end. I’m excited and proud of myself and my team.

What’s the team’s mindset in the final week of the season with playoff positioning on the line?

We need to get ahead early and come out strong. We’ve had a motivational speaker come in, long practices and we’ve been focused.

How has your game grown in your final season?

Last year, my 3-point shot wasn’t as strong. I worked hard with my coaches and my dad over the summer with it. I have the drive and shot this year. I’m in a little better shape than I was the last three years. I’m preparing for college for how that’s going to be. I want to continuously grow so I continue to work hard.

Who’s your favorite athlete?

LeBron James. He’s an all-around great player. He has the shot, drive and motivation to get better. When you turn on the television, he’s the first player your eyes go to with how hard he works. That’s the type of player I want to be.
