Westmoreland high school lookahead: Week of March 25, 2019

MONDAY

Baseball: Teams will try to get in games as the WPIAL season dodges wet weather. A full slate of nonsection action includes Greensburg Central Catholic at Steel Valley, Burrell at Kiski Area, Greensburg Salem at North Hills, Indiana at Norwin, Monessen at Bentworth and Southmoreland at Mt. Pleasant.

Softball: Section 2-6A play opens for Norwin as the Knights travel to Fox Chapel.

Monessen at Carmichaels, Penn-Trafford at Gateway, Riverview at Greensburg Central Catholic and Purchase Line at Ligonier Valley are other area games.

TUESDAY

Baseball: Local games on the schedule include Monessen at Southmoreland and Albert Gallatin at Belle Vernon. Ligonier Valley is set to host Penns Manor in District 6.

Softball: Local teams will travel a lot more in Section 2-6A, including Hempfield, which opens its section slate at North Hills. Seneca Valley at Norwin is another Section 2 matchup.

In Section 1-5A, Franklin Regional hosts Armstrong, Connellsville visits Penn-Trafford and Laurel Highlands goes to Latrobe.

Southmoreland opens Section 3-3A play at home against Brownsville.

Boys volleyball: The start of section play features three good Section 3-AAA matchups in Latrobe at Penn-Trafford, Norwin at Penn Hills and Armstrong at Hempfield.

WEDNESDAY

Baseball: North Allegheny is set to visit Penn-Trafford in a playoff rematch from last season.

Other area games to watch are: Greensburg Central Catholic at Burrell, Kiski School at Latrobe and Springdale at Southmoreland.

Softball: Derry goes to Yough for a nonsection game.

THURSDAY

Baseball: Greensburg Central Catholic is set for an early-season road trip as the Centurions travel to play DuBois Central Catholic.

Geibel at Southmoreland, Belle Vernon at Highlands, and Ligonier Valley at United are are other area games.

Softball: Section play continues for Hempfield as the Spartans host North Allegheny in Section 2-6A.

Section 1-5A games include Franklin Regional at Connellsville, Latrobe at Armstrong and Penn-Trafford at Albert Gallatin.

Elizabeth Forward at Mt. Pleasant is a strong nonsection matchup, as is Norwin at Yough.

FRIDAY

Baseball: Latrobe is scheduled to host its first night home game at Graham-Sobota Field as the Wildcats welcome Bethel Park at 7 p.m.

Additional local matchups: Greensburg Salem at Kiski School, Norwin at Central Catholic, Upper St. Clair at Belle Vernon, Kiski Area at Penn-Trafford, Washington at Jeannette and Yough at Steel Valley.

Softball: Mt. Pleasant plays at Penn-Trafford, and Jeannette visits Southmoreland in nonsection action.

SATURDAY

Baseball: Hempfield will host Central Catholic at 1 p.m. in a Class 6A nonsection game.

Softball: Nonsection games to watch are Greensburg Salem at Gateway (noon) and Ligonier Valley at Belle Vernon (2:30 p.m.).
