A pair of Western Pennsylvania hockey teams are shining on the national stage.

Pennsylvania Class AA champion Pine-Richland and PIHL Division II runner-up Burrell won their first two games of pool play Thursday and Friday at the USA Hockey High School National Championship in Cleveland, Ohio.

Pine-Richland, playing in the Division I tournament, routed the Glenelg (Md.) Gladiators, 8-0, on Friday as eight different players scored: Brandon Kashur, William Studt, Alexander Rihn, Nicholas Lindauer, Brandon Will, Brian Phipps, Ian Voit and Patrick Saber. Daniel Stauffer made 27 saves for his second consecutive shutout of the tournament.

Burrell, playing in the Division II tournament, got a hat trick from star Tyler Stewart in its 6-2 victory over Steinbrenner (Fla.) High School. Giovanni Palombo added two goals and Logan Schoepf had the other for the Bucs. Stewart also scored a hat trick in Burrell’s tournament-opening victory over Boulder/Monarch (Colo.).

Pool play will wrap up Saturday as Pine-Richland plays the Pinnacle (Ariz.) Pioneers and Burrell plays the Omaha (Neb.) Lancers. The top two teams from each pool advance to the tournament playoffs, which take place Sunday and Monday.
