Westmoreland lookahead for Week of April 1, 2019

MONDAY

Baseball: Greensburg Central Catholic and Jeannette are no longer section opponents but the teams plan to renew their rivalry with a nonsection game at Clarkson Field in Jeannette.

Penn-Trafford will take on Hampton in nonsection play at Hempfield Park. Southmoreland visits Greensburg Salem, and Yough goes to Norwin.

Franklin Regional visits Plum in a Section 2-6A game.

Softball: Defending WPIAL champion Southmoreland is set to host Brownsville in Section 3-3A.

TUESDAY

Softball: Hempfield will look to shake off a tough loss to North Allegheny when it hosts Fox Chapel in Section 2-6A. That section also has Butler at Norwin.

Section 1-5A games to watch include Albert Gallatin at Latrobe, Kiski Area at Penn-Trafford and Laurel Highlands at Franklin Regional.

Indiana plays at Mt. Pleasant in Section 1-4A. Belle Vernon heads to Thomas Jefferson in Section 2-4A, and Waynesburg visits Southmoreland (3-3A).

Boys volleyball: Section 3-AAA features a pair of local matches with Hempfield playing at Penn-Trafford and Latrobe visiting Plum.

Track & field: Top meets include Greensburg Salem at Penn-Trafford and Latrobe at Norwin in Section 1-AAA; Penn Hills at Franklin Regional (5-AAA) and Greensburg Central Catholic at Derry (8-AA).

WEDNESDAY

Baseball: In Section 1-5A, Franklin Regional will host Armstrong in its home opener at Haymaker Park in Murrysville.

Other games to watch are Highlands at Mt. Pleasant and Yough at Indiana (1-4A), Beth-Center at Southmoreland (3-3A) and Latrobe at Seneca Valley.

THURSDAY

Softball: The top game in Section 1-5A has Latrobe visiting Franklin Regional, and Penn-Trafford heads to Laurel Highlands.

Other top games are Hempfield at Pine-Richland (2-6A) and Mt. Pleasant at Greensburg Salem (1-4A).

Baseball: Bethel Park at Hempfield is a nonsection game but could be one of the best games of the day. Also keep an eye on Connellsville at Mt. Pleasant and Penn-Trafford at Gateway in nonsection action.

Boys volleyball: Norwin at Latrobe (3-AAA) and Derry at Gateway (2-AA) are notable matches.

FRIDAY

Baseball: A number of key section games dot the schedule with Franklin Regional at Fox Chapel (1-5A), Greensburg Salem at Highlands (1-4A), Knoch at Yough (1-4A), Mt. Pleasant at Derry (1-4A) and South Park at Belle Vernon (3-4A).

Greensburg Central Catholic is scheduled to host Ligonier Valley in a nonsection game.

Softball: Penn-Trafford will take on Hempfield in a nonsection game at Seton Hill, and Greensburg Central Catholic will play a Section 3-A game at perennial power Leechburg.

SATURDAY

Baseball: Some out-of-section action to watch: Butler at Hempfield; Charleroi at Belle Vernon; and Chartiers-Houston at Greensburg Central Catholic.

Softball: Yough at Latrobe is a nonsection matchup of potential title contenders.

Boys volleyball: The annual Derry Invitational will bring in teams from around the WPIAL.

Track and field: Some of the WPIAL’s top athletes will compete at the South Hills Classic.
