High school roundup for April 16, 2019: No. 1 Blackhawk tops New Castle on walk-off

Justin Nixon hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift top-ranked Blackhawk to a 4-3 win over visiting New Castle in a Section 2-4A baseball game Tuesday afternoon.

Nixon was 3 for 4 with two RBIs. Ray Knally was 2 for 4 with two RBIs for the Cougars (7-2, 5-0).

Rocco Bernadina and Dante MiCaletti each doubled for New Castle (4-4, 3-1).

Quaker Valley 11, Central Valley 1 (5 inn.) — Christian Johnson was 3 for 4 with a grand slam and five RBIs as part of a 10-run fifth inning as Quaker Valley (5-3, 2-3) won in Section 2-4A.

North Allegheny 10, Allderdice 2 — Ryan Partridge threw a three-hitter with nine strikeouts to lift No. 5 North Allegheny (6-4, 3-1) to a Section 1-6A win.

Seneca Valley 4, Central Catholic 1 — Josh McLean homered, and Cam Vozel was 2 for 3 with a triple and RBI as No. 2 Seneca Valley (8-2, 3-1) won a Section 1-6A game.

Penn-Trafford 8, Latrobe 1 — Winning pitcher Tyler Horvat was 3 for 4 with two RBIs and three runs scored as Penn-Trafford (10-1, 3-1) won in Section 2-6A. He allowed two hits and struck out nine in six innings.

Bethel Park 11, Canon-McMillan 6 — Sean McGowan, Payten Miller and Eric Chalus all knocked in two runs as Bethel Park (7-2, 4-1) won in Section 3-6A.

Mt. Lebanon 10, Peters Township 3 — Colin Dalson and Clay Petulla each knocked in three runs as Mt. Lebanon (6-6, 3-2) won in Section 3-6A.

Hampton 7, Moon 3 — Burke Camper had three hits, including a home run, and three RBIs as Hampton (5-4, 3-1) won a Section 2-5A game. Tyler Bischke and Casey Marshalwitz also had three hits.

Shaler 5, South Fayette 2 — Braeden Campbell had two RBIs, and Hunter Boyan tossed a complete game as No. 4 Shaler (7-3, 2-1) won in Section 2-5A.

South Park 2, West Mifflin 1 — Zach Lemansky was 3 for 3 with a double and RBI as South Park (7-4, 3-3) won in Section 3-4A.

New Brighton 3, Freedom 2 — Jake Francona hit a solo home run to help New Brighton (5-4, 3-2) win a Section 2-3A game. Francona also scattered seven hits and struck out seven to earn the win.

Carmichaels 7, Frazier 2 — Matt Barrish was 3 for 4 with an RBI, and Gavin Pratt knocked in two runs as Carmichaels (7-1, 3-1) won in Section 1-2A.

Neshannock 8, Mohawk 5 — Austin McBride had four RBIs to help No. 3 Neshannock (8-1, 4-1) win in Section 2-2A.

Franklin Regional 6, Penn Hills 0 — Andrew Muraco threw a four-hitter with 13 strikeouts to help No. 2 Franklin Regional secure a Section 1-5A win.

Mike Klingensmith, Tom Kegerreis and Thomas Nicely all had extra-base hits for the Panthers (8-1, 5-0).

Connellsville 2, Hempfield 1 — Winning pitcher Gage Gillott had an RBI to help Connellsville (4-1, 2-1) win in Section 2-6A. Aiden Dunlap had an RBI for Hempfield (6-6, 1-3).

Plum 1, Norwin 0 — Gino Marra threw a no-hitter, and Plum scored its lone run on an error in the bottom of the seventh inning for a walk-off win over No. 3 Norwin in a Section 2-6A game.

Marra struck out 11 batters and walked two, and Plum (5-6, 2-2) had no errors to pick up its second consecutive win over a ranked opponent.

Billy Kerston took the loss for Norwin (6-3, 2-2), allowing six hits and no earned runs in 6 2/3 innings.

Knoch 3, Mt. Pleasant 1 — The Knights scored two runs early and Jack Bartek gave up five hits as Class 4A No. 4 Knoch held on for a Section 1 win. Braden Tristani notched two RBIs for Knoch (7-1, 3-1). Pete Billey had an RBI, and Joe Shrum took the loss for Mt. Pleasant (4-3, 3-2).

Yough 12, Derry 2 (5 inn.) — Class 4A No. 2 Yough (7-3, 5-1) scored nine runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to earn a Section 1-4A victory. Noah Manns hit a three-run home run, and Steve Manon doubled home three runs for the Cougars. Jarett Bach, who tossed a two-hitter with nine strikeouts, also had two RBIs. Josh Ulery knocked in a run for Derry (2-5, 1-4).

McGuffey 10, Southmoreland 2 — Chad Fleischauer was 2 for 2 with three RBIs, and Jake Orr and Seth Burgdolt each had three hits as McGuffey (5-3, 4-1) won in Section 3-3A. Brok Potoka had two RBIs for Southmoreland (2-6, 0-4).

Seton LaSalle 10, Jeannette 0 (5 inn.) — Drew Lafferty tossed a one-hitter with seven strikeouts as Seton LaSalle (7-2, 2-1) blanked Jeannette (6-3, 2-2) in Section 3-2A. Seth Howard had the lone hit for the Jayhawks.

Ligonier Valley 10, Northern Cambria 3 — John Caldwell had two hits and two RBIs, and Sam Sheeder doubled in two runs as Ligonier Valley (8-0, 7-0) won a District 6 Heritage Conference game. Ethan Boring earned the victory.

Highlands 6, Indiana 2 — Jett Slepak gave up one hit and struck out seven through five innings as Highlands rolled to a Section 1-4A win. Noah Gillette went 3 for 3 with two RBIs, and Matt Cekada doubled twice for Highlands (6-4, 2-3).

Freeport 10, East Allegheny 1 — Joseph Hotalski pitched a complete game, striking out seven, and the Yellowjackets tallied 10 hits as Class 3A No. 4 Freeport cruised past East Allegheny (0-6, 0-5) for a Section 1 win.

Fox Chapel 7, Armstrong 2 — Matt Jerpe hit a go-ahead two-run triple in the fourth inning as Fox Chapel rallied to pick up the Section 1-5A win over Armstrong (6-4, 2-3). Jerpe went 3 for 3, including a triple and three RBIs, and Mitch Miles doubled and knocked in a run for Fox Chapel (6-2, 4-2). Jonathan Simon picked up the win, and Noah Marks gave up one hit over the last three innings to earn the save.

Leechburg 11, Clairton 0 (5 inn.) — Cameron Curfman and John Sorisio had an RBI double each as Leechburg won in Section 3-A. Anthony Mangee doubled, and Mario Leonard struck out four to pick up the win for Leechburg (3-5, 2-2).

Gateway 7, Kiski Area 4 (10 inn.) — The Class 5A No. 3 Gators (8-2, 5-0) scored three runs in the top of the 10th inning to escape with a Section 1-5A win over Kiski Area. Garrett Polka doubled twice and Billy Perroz singled and knocked in a run for Kiski Area (5-5, 2-3).

Softball

Upper St. Clair 10, Mt. Lebanon 6 — Haley Beardsley had two hits and two RBIs to help Upper St. Clair (7-3, 5-2) won in Section 1-6A.

Fox Chapel 4, North Allegheny 2 — Jessica Klein hit a two-run single in the top of the seventh that scored Claire Katz and Mackenzie Borkovich and gave Fox Chapel the lead for good in an upset of Class 6A No. 1 North Allegheny in Section 2 play. Amelia Herzer doubled and Borkovich struck out six in a complete-game effort to earn the win for Fox Chapel (3-6, 2-6). North Allegheny had runners on second and third with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but Alaina Whipkey popped up the second baseman to end the game. Ashley Adams had an RBI double for North Allegheny (9-1, 7-1).

Hampton 11, Mars 1 (5 inn.) — Winning pitcher Anneliese Probeck and Lydia Qualgia each knocked in three runs as No. 3 Hampton (8-0, 7-0) won in Section 2-5A.

Quaker Valley 5, Hopewell 3 — Lanie French was 2 for 3, Isabella DeGori homered and Jeana McCracken had two RBIs to help Quaker Valley (2-4, 1-3) win in Section 3-4A.

Ellwood City 16, Beaver Falls 0 (3 inn.) — Ariana Garroway homered and had five RBIs, and Marie Ioanilli hit a three-run home run as Ellwood City (6-4, 3-2) won in Section 2-3A. Angie Nardone struck out six in the two-hitter.

South Allegheny 6, Steel Valley 4 — Sydney Kirkwood was 3 for 4 with two doubles and three RBIs as No. 3 South Allegheny (11-1, 5-1) won in Section 3-3A. Madison Taylor added two hits and two RBIs in the win.

South Side 8, Burgettstown 3 — Kaitlyn Woodling and MaKenzie Freeman hit two-run home runs, and Sydney Payne hit a three-run shot as South Side (6-2, 5-1) won in Section 1-2A.

Frazier 2, Chartiers-Houston 0 — Kathryn Barch doubled in a run, and Megan Celaschi had two doubles and an RBI to help No. 3 Frazier (8-1, 6-1) top No. 1 Chartiers-Houston (9-2, 5-1) in Section 3-2A. Logan Hartman allowed four hits in the victory.

Laurel 15, New Brighton 0 (3 inn.) — Maddie Boyd threw a one-hitter to lift No. 2 Laurel (10-1, 7-1) to a Section 4-2A win. Brooke Atkins, Kayla Ruperto and Kendra Ruperto all homered.

Mohawk 5, Freedom 4 — Nikki Retort knocked in two runs, and Courtney Upham had two hits as Mohawk (7-2, 6-2) won in Section 4-2A.

Hempfield 10, North Hills 5 — Ashley Orischak was 3 for 4 with a double, triple and three RBIs as Hempfield (6-4, 6-2) won in Section 2-6A. Laura Fox was 3 for 3, and Jessica Persin and Emma Hoffner each had two RBIs for the Spartans.

Latrobe 8, Laurel Highlands 1 — Jordan Tallman threw a one-hitter with 14 strikeouts to lead No. 2 Latrobe (9-1, 6-1) to a Section 1-5A victory. Lauren Bisignani had three hits for the Wildcats.

Elizabeth Forward 4, Belle Vernon 0 — Kailey Larcinese threw a three-hitter with nine strikeouts to guide No. 5 Elizabeth Forward (6-3, 5-0) to a Section 2-4A win. Brianna Sersevic was 3 for 4 with three RBIs for the Warriors. Sophie Godzak took the loss for the Leopards (5-6, 3-3).

Southmoreland 11, Brownsville 1 (5 inn.) — Faith Miller was 4 for 4 with a double and three RBIs to guide Southmoreland (5-2, 4-2) to a Section 3-3A win. Emily Eutsey had two hits and two RBIs, Tyson Martin doubled in two runs, and Lexi Klatt was 3 for 4 with an RBI. Jess Matheny scattered seven hits and struck out seven in the win.

Monessen 14, California 4 (6 inn.) — Kendelle Weston was 3 for 3 and winning pitcher Hannah Yorty added two hits as Monessen (1-5, 1-2) won in Section 2-A.

Leechburg 14, Greensburg Central Catholic 3 (5 inn.) — Kristen Knapp hit an inside-the-park grand slam as No. 2 Leechburg cruised in Section 3-A. Tatum Verner had four hits and six RBIs, and Emma Ritchie picked up the win for Leechburg (7-0, 6-0). Jaden Cox doubled and had one RBI for Greensburg Central Catholic (3-5, 3-3).

Freeport 7, Greensburg Salem 0 — Tori Radvan went 4 for 4 with two doubles and two RBIs, and Autumn Powell had two hits and three RBIs, including a two-run homer in the first inning, as Class 3A No. 4 Freeport (6-0) blanked Greensburg Salem in nonsection play. Radvan and Powell combined in the circle to limit the Golden Lions (2-7) to four hits. Ally DeJidas doubled and hit a solo homer for the Yellowjackets.

Marion Center 11, Derry 1 (6 inn.) — Morgan Straw was 3 for 5, and Jasmine Hill homered as Marion Center won a nonsection game. Gianna Copelli homered for Derry (2-6).

Yough 8, Armstrong 2 — Katelyn Chilzer hit a two-run single, and Hannah Christner had two hits and an RBI as Class 4A No. 2 Yough (7-4) won a nonsection game. Kierra Waywood scattered seven hits and struck out 10 for the victory.

Ligonier Valley 4, Northern Cambria 1 — Jane Garver threw a four-hitter with nine strikeouts and also had two hits and an RBI as Ligonier Valley (8-0, 6-0) won a District 6 Heritage Conference game. Bella Vargulish had two RBIs in the win.

Plum 7, Shaler 5 — RBI doubles by Gabby Fischetti and Alyssa Schofield highlighted Plum’s three-run fifth inning as the Mustangs rallied in Section 2-5A. MacKenzie Lake also had a double and three stolen bases. Melanie Mienke struck out eight to earn the win for Plum (8-2, 7-1).
