High school roundup for April 25, 2019: North Hills edges No. 3 Seneca Valley

North Hills scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to earn a 12-11 win over No. 3 Seneca Valley in a Section 2-6A softball game Thursday afternoon.

Senior Leslie Rozanski smacked a walk-off double to seal the win. Melanie Taylor hit a three-run home run for North Hills (7-6, 5-6).

Kearson Wagner had two hits and three RBIs for Seneca Valley (10-4, 7-4).

Peters Township 5, Mt. Lebanon 1 — Chloe Paugh had two RBIs, and Mirjana Hutnik was 3 for 3 as Peters Township (8-7, 6-5) won in Section 1-6A.

Hampton 5, Gateway 2 — Anneliese Probeck doubled in two runs with a double in the top of the seventh inning to give No. 2 Hampton (12-0, 11-0) a Section 2-5A win. She also threw a five-hitter with eight strikeouts.

Elizabeth Forward 10, West Mifflin 0 (5 inn.) — Anna Resnik had three hits, including a double and home run, and six RBIs, as No. 4 Elizabeth Forward (10-3, 9-0) won a Section 2-4A game. Kailey Larcinese threw a five-hitter with four strikeouts.

Avonworth 16, Beaver Falls 0 (3 inn.) — Emily Davis threw a no-hitter, and Natalie Marshall doubled in three runs as No. 1 Avonworth (14-1, 7-1) won a Section 2-3A game.

Frazier 10, Beth-Center 0 (5 inn.) — Logan Hartman threw a one-hitter with 12 strikeouts and also knocked in two runs as No. 1 Frazier (10-2, 8-2) won in Section 3-2A. Rylee Evans homered in the win.

Union 15, Rochester 0 (4 inn.) — Halaena Blakley hit for the cycle and had seven RBIs as No. 4 Union (7-4, 7-0) won in Section 1-A. She also threw a one-hitter with six strikeouts.

Ligonier Valley 15, United 0 (3 inn.) — Jane Garver had three hits and three RBIs, and Kaylee Colt, Abi Cmar and Bella Vargulish all had three RBIs as Ligonier Valley (11-0, 9-0) won in the District 6 Heritage Conference.

Maddie Griffin threw a one-hitter with eight strikeouts.

Deer Lakes 7, Valley 2 — Reese Hasley singled to score Jenna Bisegna for the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth inning as Deer Lakes rallied to defeat Section 1-3A foe Valley. Marleen Meyer pitched a complete game, giving up three hits and striking out four batters for Deer Lakes (7-6, 7-1), which won its fourth straight game. Bisegna doubled and knocked in two runs and Meyer tripled and added an RBI to pace the Lancers’ offense. Danielle Yaworski doubled and notched an RBI for Valley (2-8, 1-6).

Leechburg 16, Ellis School 0 (3 inn.) — Olivia Shimer and Aubry Skeel both hit three-run home runs for the Class A No. 2 Blue Devils (10-0, 8-0) in a Section 3-A win over Ellis. McKenna Pierce doubled and drove in two runs, Keira Jones doubled and Emma Ritchie struck out six batters and limited Ellis School to one hit.

Apollo-Ridge 17, Northgate 2 (4 inn.) — Kylie Wynn hit her second grand slam of the season to cap off a five-run fourth inning as Apollo-Ridge rolled over Section 2-2A opponent Northgate (3-8, 2-6). Bailey Zidek doubled, singled twice and tallied three RBIs, and Addy Baustert doubled and knocked in a pair of runs to power the Apollo-Ridge (5-3, 5-3) offense. Mollie Charlton gave up three hits and struck out eight to pick up the win for the Vikings.

Vincentian Academy 5, Riverview 1 — The Raiders put a run on the board late but Class AA No. 2 Vincentian (10-0, 9-0) was already in control in a Section 2 matchup. Alyssa Cappa took the loss for Riverview (4-4, 3-4), giving up 10 hits and striking out eight batters.

Connellsville 10, Kiski Area 3 — The Cavaliers tied the score 3-3 with a two-run fifth inning, but the Falcons (8-3, 7-2) came back with five runs in the bottom of the fifth in a Section 1-5A matchup. Courtney Moyer doubled, tripled and notched two RBIs to lead the Kiski Area (2-9, 2-9) offense.

Baseball

Canon-McMillan 1, Mt. Lebanon 0 — Canon-McMillan (8-6, 4-4) scored on a balk in the top of the fourth inning to earn a Section 3-6A win. Cam Weston threw a three-hitter with 10 strikeouts to pick up the victory. Cameron Knox scattered five hits and had 12 strikeouts for Mt. Lebanon (7-8, 3-4).

Mars 10, North Hills 1 — Jon Wetherholt homered and had four RBIs to help Mars (9-4, 4-2) win in Section 2-5A.

Beaver 3, Central Valley 1 — Zach Hansen tripled in two runs as Beaver (6-6, 5-2) won in Section 2-4A.

Hopewell 9, Ellwood City 2 — Alex Kunzmann had a home run and three RBIs to lead No. 1 Hopewell (9-4, 7-1) to a Section 2-3A win.

New Brighton 3, Shady Side Academy 2 — Jackson Hall knocked in a run, and Keandre Williams had two hits, including a double, as New Brighton (9-4, 6-2) won in Section 2-3A.

Beth-Center 9, Washington 2 — Anthony Dellapenna scattered seven hits and struck out eight as Beth-Center (6-6, 6-2) won in Section 3-3A.

McGuffey 1, Charleroi 0 — Ryan Sullivan threw a no-hitter with six strikeouts to lead McGuffey (7-3, 6-1) to a Section 3-3A win. Luke Wagner knocked in the only run for McGuffey.

Shenango 10, Riverside 0 (5 inn) — Marcus Fuller threw a no-hitter with eight strikeouts as No. 1 Shenango (14-1, 8-0) won in Section 2-2A. Crescenzo Calabria was 3 for 3, and Ethan Bintrim had two hits and two RBIs.

Quigley Catholic 3, Cornell 0 — LJ Evans tossed a one-hitter with eight strikeouts as No. 4 Quigley Catholic (6-5, 5-1) won a Section 1-A game.

Ligonier Valley 13, United 0 (5 inn.) — John Caldwell tossed a two-hitter with eight strikeouts to help Ligonier Valley (11-0, 9-0) win a District 6 Heritage Conference game.

Sully Schueltz had a double, triple and three RBIs, and Grant Dowden and Andrew Kuzemchak each knocked in two runs for the Rams.

Jeannette 8, Apollo-Ridge 2 — The Jayhawks put up five runs over the final two innings to beat Apollo-Ridge in Section 3-2A play. Seth Howard tripled and knocked in two runs, and Zack Berginac tallied three RBIs for Jeannette (7-7, 3-3). Brice Laurenti doubled for Apollo-Ridge (1-8, 0-6).

Greensburg Central Catholic 6, Leechburg 3 — Tom Salley and Ben LaCarte each had two hits and two RBIs as Greensburg Central Catholic (6-7, 5-1) won in Section 3-A. Tom Voelker doubled twice for GCC. Nathan Shinko had two hits for Leechburg (4-7, 3-3).

Indiana 4, Kiski Area 1 — Pitcher Alec Petroff pitched a one-hitter, and Indiana (1-14) put up three runs in the third inning to beat Kiski Area in a nonsection matchup. Ryan Rametta had the lone hit for Kiski Area (6-7).
