Ligonier Valley sprinters hope to make their mark at Heritage Conference meet

It has been another banner season for the Ligonier Valley track and field team, especially for a couple of senior sprinters.

Elliott Rost and Zach Beitel recently opened some eyes at a couple of big meets.

Rost won the 100-meter dash at the Westmoreland County Coaches’ Association meet April 27 at Latrobe.

Beitel then won the 100 dash at the West Coaches Meet at Windber on Friday.

Both are on a 400-meter relay team that is running around 43.5 seconds. Running with them are senior Aaron Tutino and senior Lucas Rishilla.

“I’m kind of having a breakout season,” Rost said. “I really worked hard, and my times in the 100 and 200 have been falling all season.”

Rost and Beitel are just a couple of the runners who will be leading the Rams in the District 6 Heritage Conference meet Tuesday at United.

“I’ve been on the team all four years, and it’s a big thing to win the conference meet,” Beitel said. “It’s a tradition we have to uphold.

“The 400 relay team, we definitely can get better. Everyone just needs to pick it up a little. We have a lot of guys stepping up.”

Rost, who also played soccer, will be attending Vermont. He isn’t planning on participating in athletics, so he wants to go out strong in his final meets.

Beitel, who played football, will be attending IUP. He’s also looking forward to finishing his high school career on a high note.

Tuesday’s meet will begin at 2:15 p.m. with field events. Track prelims will start around 4 p.m.
