With the score tied 11-11 in the final minute of the WPIAL Class AAA girls lacrosse final between Upper St. Clair and Shady Side Academy, Mother Nature decided to put a halt on the night and add some suspense.

With 28 seconds remaining in regulation, lightning followed by heavy rain forced a postponement of the remainder of the WPIAL Class AAA girls lacrosse final. The game will resume at 3:30 p.m. Friday.

CeCe Messner made a key interception for Shady Side Academy and started running up the field and then lightning struck. The Indians will have possession when play resumes.

Before lightning struck, the Panthers and Indians had an intense back and forth battle.

Shady Side Academy scored three times early on in the second half to build a 10-7 lead, but Upper St. Clair responded.

Lindsay Newton and Celena Kerr scored goals on consecutive possessions to cut the lead to one, and then Newton scored on a free position play to tie it up with 6:25 remaining.

Dylan Green responded with a goal to give Shady Side the lead back a minute later. Lauren Hart scored on a rebound to tie the game with less than four minutes remaining.

The two teams traded fruitless possessions late before the postponement.

Lindsay Newton scored three goals for the Panthers. Haley Newton, Celena Kerr and Lauren Hart had two goals apiece, and Liv Gerlach and Hannah Thompson scored once.

Molly Walsh, Emmie Lau and Dylan Green had a hat trick each for Shady Side Academy. Abby Todd and Messner scored one goal apiece.
