High school roundup for Jan. 27, 2021: No. 1 Waynesburg rolls over Canon Mac

When Waynesburg and Canon-McMillan met in the Section 4-AAA finals last year, it was one of the most exciting dual meets of the season. After the teams wrestled to a 30-30 tie, the Raiders won on the ninth tie-breaking criteria.

When the teams met again Wednesday night, tie-breaking criteria were not required.

No. 1 Waynesburg (8-0) turned in a dominant performance, winning the first seven bouts and cruising to a 48-13 victory over the No. 6 Big Macs (7-4).

The match started with a meeting between ranked wrestlers at 120 pounds. No. 2 Mac Church of Waynesburg defeated No. 4 Jacob Houpt, 3-1.

From there, Zander Pahturos (126) and Rocco Welsh (152) picked up major decisions and Cole Homet (138) and Wyatt Henson (145) recorded pins, and the Raiders built their lead to 32-0.

Furman (172), Rohaly (215) and Binni (103) won matches for Canon-McMillan.

Eli Makel (189) and Ryan Howard (285) added pins for Waynesburg.

Avonworth 33, Carlynton 24 – Luke Hollywood (138) and Anthony Mundorf (145) won by fall and Jacob Barbabella (215) took a decision to lead Avonworth to a Section 2B-AA win. Chase Brandebura (126) won for Carlynton.

Beaver 36, Ellwood City 30 – Mark Ramer (285), Nick Thompson (132) and Joshua Gilliam (138) recorded pins to lead Beaver to a nonsection win. Ben Gallenz (113), Chris Quintanella (160) and Rodney Grymes (189) won by fall for Ellwood City.

Burgettstown 73, South Side 0 – Parker Sentipal (106), Joseph Sentipal (126), Hunter Guiddy (132), Eric Kovach (138) and Anthony Lancos (145) had pins to lead Burgettstown to a Section 1A-AA win.

Fort Cherry 49, Keystone Oaks 12 – Chasten McConn (160) and Nashaun Sutton (132) recorded pins for Fort Cherry in a Section 1A-AA victory.

Fort Cherry 42, South Park 24 – Anthony Salvini (172), Robbie West (215) and Jake Tkach (152) had pins to lead Fort Cherry in Section 1A-AA.

Freedom 30, Central Valley 28 – Trent Schultheis (189) had a first-period pin to lead Freedom to a Section 2A-AA win. Zack Bundy (172), Dominic Bruno (120) and Ambrose Boni (132) won matches for Central Valley.

Freedom 36, Blackhawk 18 – First-period pins from David Campbell (152) and Tanner Millward (132) sparked Freedom in Section 2A-AA. Collin Keller (172) had a pin for Blackhawk.

Penn Hills 17, Woodland Hills 6 – Owen Templer (132) won by tech fall and Hunter Shields (138) had a pin to lead Penn Hills to a Section 1B-AAA win.

Penn-Trafford 42, Mt. Pleasant 30 — Owen Ott recorded a third-period pin in the final bout of the match at 145 pounds to seal a 42-30 nonsection wrestling victory for Penn-Trafford over Mt. Pleasant on Wednesday night.

Behind pins from Noah Gnibus (172), Aaron Stasko (189), Dayton Pitzer (215) and Joseph Longhi (106), Mt. Pleasant (6-4, 4-0) took a 24-15 lead.

A pin by Troy Hohman (113) and a 2-1 decision for Hayden Coy over Greg Shaulis (120) pulled Penn-Trafford (6-5, 3-1) even at 24-24 with four bouts to go.

Pins by Ryan Auel (126) and Ott secured the win. Penn-Trafford’s Joe Enick won by fall over Ian Fasano in a matchup of top heavyweights.

Peters Township 44, Mt. Lebanon 30 – Richard Meyers (113), Jackson Spiteri (120), Luca Attanucci (126) and Eliot Schratz (132) won four straight bouts, three by pin and one by tech fall, to power Peters Township to a Section 4B-AAA win. Aaron Slizik (160) and Phillip Nave (215) also had pins for Peters. For Mt. Lebanon, Mac Stout (189) had a 14-second pin. Louis Pietragallo (152), Streiff Benjamin (285) and Sam Mago (138) also won by fall.

Plum 60, Penn Hills 9 – Vinny Citrano (126) recorded a pin and the Mustangs won nine matches via forfeit to score a victory over Penn Hills. Hunter Shields (138) had a pin for Penn Hills and Aidan Pham (215) won a 5-2 decision.

Southmoreland 48, Ligonier Valley 18 – Andrew Johnson, Brendan Moore (172) and Mason Neiderhiser (285) won by fall to lead Southmoreland to a Section 3B-AA win. Tristan Ice (150) and Bryson Robinson won decisions for the Scotties. Josh Harbert (113) and Ryan Harbert (145) had pins for Ligonier Valley (1-2, 1-2).

Southmoreland 39, Elizabeth Forward 35 – Bryson Robinson (160) , Brendan Moore (172), Josh Thoma (189) and Anthony Govern (215) strung together four straight pins to lead Southmoreland (9-5, 3-2) to a Section 3B-AA win. Andrew Johnson (138) and Tristan Ice (152) also won for the Scotties. Justin Patton (145), Nick Murphy (285) and Damon Michaels had pins for Elizabeth Forward (2-3, 2-3).

West Mifflin 36, Albert Gallatin 33 – Nyzair Burt (132), Tony Salopek (160) and Howard Congdon (215) recorded pins to lead West Mifflin to a Section 2A-AAA win. Philip Dennis (138) and Landon Conroy (145) won matches for Albert Gallatin.

West Mifflin 48, Baldwin 21 – Nyzair Burt (126), Logan Chedwick (138) and Tony Salopek (160) had pins to carry West Mifflin to a Section 2A-AAA win. Owen Klodowski (106) and John Starusko (145) won matches for Baldwin.

Boys basketball

Apollo-Ridge 63, St. Joseph 35 – Klay Fitzroy surpassed 1,000 points for his career and had a game-high 27 points to help Apollo-Ridge (3-0, 2-0) top St. Joseph (3-5, 2-2) in a nonsection game. Jake Fello scored 12 points for the Vikings. Andrew Sullivan and Rylan Zale scored nine points apiece for St. Joseph.

Avonworth 57, Sewickley Academy 50 – Andrew Gannon scored 22 points and No. 5 Avonworth (7-0, 3-0) used a 21-4 surge in the third quarter to pick up a nonsection win. Max Belt scored 20 and Josh Okofafor added 10 for Sewickley Academy (4-4, 1-2).

Cathedral Prep 60, Bethel Park 35 – Kahli Horton scored 14 points and Liam Galla added 11 to help Cathedral Prep to a nonsection win. Fred Schein led Bethel Park (1-5, 0-1) with eight points.

Central Valley 66, Lincoln Park 59 – Brandon Graham scored 22 points to lead four players in double figures as Central Valley (4-0, 2-0) knocked off the top-ranked team in Class 4A. Justin Thompson added 15, Andre Vacich 13 and Jayvin Thompson 11. L.A. Pratt led Lincoln Park (3-4, 2-1) with 23 points. DaQuan Bradford had 12.

Deer Lakes 62, Keystone Oaks 47 – Bryce Robson scored 19 points and Armend Karpuzi added 12 to lead Deer Lakes (1-3, 1-2) to a Section 1-4A win. The Lancers took control with a 22-11 surge in the third quarter. Owen Minford led Keystone Oaks (1-3, 0-2) with 18 points.

Elizabeth Forward 58, South Park 55 – Zach Boyd scored 24 points and Vernon Settles chipped in 13 in a Section 3-4A win for Elizabeth Forward (4-3, 4-1). Keith Hutton had 23 for South Park (1-1, 1-1). Harper Conroy added 15 and Aidan Rongaus 13.

Ellwood City 61, Rochester 50 – Joseph Roth scored 31 points and Ellwood City (4-3, 2-2) outscored Rochester 19-3 in the fourth quarter of a nonsection win. Steve Antuono added 14 and Alexander Roth 10. Devon Hemer led Rochester (4-2, 3-1) with 20 points.

Fox Chapel 70, McKeesport 63 — Eli Yofan scored 25, Jake DeMotte added a career-high 17 points and the Foxes (6-2, 3-1) held off the Tigers (5-3, 2-2) for a nonsection victory. Braydon Kovach led the Tigers with 18 points, Brison Kisan added 15 and Travarese Rowe scored 14, including 11 in the second half. JP Dockey also scored 13 for Fox Chapel.

Hempfield 71, Latrobe 68 (OT) – Mike Hosni and Joe Fiedor scored 17 points apiece to lead Hempfield (4-2, 3-1) to a nonsection win. Christian Zilli added 14 and Sean Gordon 13 for the Spartans. Ryan Sickenberger led Latrobe (3-4, 3-2) with 19 points. Drew Clair added 12.

Highlands 65, Springdale 64 — Chandler Thimons scored with 5.9 seconds remaining to complete a comeback win for Highlands over Springdale in a nonsection game. Thimons scored 18 points for the Golden Rams, who trailed 13-4 against the Dynamos (7-3) at the end of the first quarter. Antoine McDaniel added 17 points for Highlands (6-0), and Carter Leri scored 10.

Knoch 58, Indiana 24 — Zack McMillen scored a game-high 16 points as Knoch (4-3) cruised past Indiana (0-5) in a nonsection game. Ryan Lang scored 15 points for the Knights and Blaze Voltz had 12 points.

Laurel Highlands 67, Uniontown 38 – Rodney Gallagher scored 18 points to lead Laurel Highlands (3-3, 2-0) to a nonsection win. Brandon Davis added 17 and Keondre DeShields 12. Brian Sykes led Uniontown (3-5, 3-2) with 18 points.

Mapletown 51, Bentworth 50 – Landan Stevenson scored 26 points to lead Mapletown (2-0, 1-0) to a nonsection win. Landen Urcho had 26 for Bentworth (1-5, 0-2).

Monessen 51, Propel Andrew Street 18 – Kody Kuhns scored 16 points to lead Monessen (5-5, 3-2) to a nonsection win over Propel Andrew Street (0-7, 0-5).

Moniteau 54, Riverside 43 – Kyle Pry scored 22 points and Moniteau used a 22-7 third-quarter run to claim a nonsection win. Sam Hughes had 11 and Madden Boehm 10 for Riverside (1-6, 1-2).

Plum 66, California 54 – Connor Moss scored 29 points for Plum (3-2) in a nonsection win over California (1-1). Nick Killinger had 16 points for the Mustangs.

Seton LaSalle 65, Clairton 45 – Emmett Harris scored 22 points to lead Seton LaSalle (3-4, 0-2) to a nonsection win. Ta’Vaughn Moody scored 13 for Clairton (2-5, 2-2).

South Fayette 59, Canon-McMillan 48 – Sam Rosato scored 22 points, hitting six 3-pointers, to lead South Fayette (3-1, 0-0) to a nonsection win. Logan Yater had 13. Gavin Miller led Canon-McMillan (0-5, 0-3) with 14 points. Malachi Meredith added 13.

Upper St. Clair 63, Penn-Trafford 41 – Luke Gensler scored 18 points and Luke banbury added 13 to lead No. 1 Upper St. Clair (8-1, 2-0) to a nonsection win over Penn-Trafford (5-3, 1-2).

Girls basketball

Albert Gallatin 40, Canon-McMillan 26 – Bryn Bezjak scored 14 points and Courtlyn Turner added 13 to power Albert Gallatin (6-3, 3-3) to a nonsection win. Stellanie Loutison scored 13 for Canon-McMillan (1-3, 1-2).

Belle Vernon 65, Uniontown 28 – Kaci Bitoni scored a career-best 14 points and Taylor Rodriguez added 10 to lead Belle Vernon (5-2, 3-1) to a nonsection win. Tessa Rodriguez had six points, seven assists abnd seven steals. Summer Hawk led Uniontown (0-5, 0-3) with eight points.

Brentwood 59, Steel Valley 47 – Mallory Daly scored 33 points, hitting five 3-pointers, to lead Brentwood (7-0, 7-0) to a Section 3-3A win in a game tied 40-40 after three quarters. Paige Miller added 12. Kelsey Salopek led Steel Valley (1-3, 1-3) with 14. Soraya Gibbs had 11.

East Allegheny 46, Shady Side Academy 34 – Abby Henderson hit for 29 points to power East Allegheny (3-3, 2-3) to a Section 3-3A victory. Nyla Rozier scored 10 for Shady Side Academy (0-2, 0-2).

Greensburg Salem 37, Connellsville 31 – Abby Mankins scored 11 points to lead Greensburg Salem (1-2, 0-1) to a nonsection win over Connellsville (3-2, 3-1).

Hampton 71, Central Valley 26 – Kayla Hoehler and Sophia Kelly each scored 21 points and hit five 3-pointers to lead Hampton (8-1, 4-1) to a nonsection win. Alyssa Gillin led Central Valley (1-6, 1-4) with 14 points. Paige Elmer had 10.

Propel Montour 30, Calvary Christian – Kahrijah Washington scored 12 points and Janai Green added 10 to lead Propel Montour. Emma Shashura led Calvary Christian with 17 points.

Shenango 63, Beaver Falls 30 – Kassidy Peters scored 16 points and Janie Natale added 14 for Shenango (6-3, 2-2) in a nonsection win. Kelly Cleaver added 10. J’La Kizart led Beaver Falls (2-5, 1-3) with eight points.

Union 43, Aliquippa 37 – Zoe Lepri scored 14 points and Elise Booker added 12 to help Union (3-3, 1-2) to a nonsection win. Angel Henry had 16 for Aliquippa (3-5, 2-4).
