Golfers will say there are just some courses that fit their game the best.
Latrobe Elks Golf Course is one of those courses for Penn-Trafford senior Nick Turowski.
The West Virginia commit captured his second Westmoreland County Coaches’ Association boys golf title Thursday by shooting a 4-under-par 68. He also won in 2021.
Turowski helped lead the Warriors to the team overall and Class 3 title with a 380. Latrobe was second with a 398, and Franklin Regional was third with a 404.
“I play really good here. It’s a good course for me,” Turowski said. “It fits my game. I placed second here last year, and I qualified for the West Penn Amateur here.”
Turowski had a slight advantage on the field with his booming drives, which he said averaged about 330 yards.
“A lot of the par 4s, I’m next to the green. I was on in two on the par 5s,” Turowski said. “I also was chipping and putting well. Everything was clicking. I was hitting all the greens, and the putter finally clicked.”
He birdied Nos. 3 and 5 on the front nine, and Nos. 12, 15 and 18 on the back. His lone bogey was on No. 14.
“I love this tournament, and I love this golf course,” Turowski said. “Unfortunately, there wasn’t a tournament my freshman year. I got to win it two of three years.”
The other players teaming up with Turowski were David Newsom (76), Braedy Mastine (77), Bryce Kropczynski (79) and Seth Hartman (80).
Newsom finished sixth overall, and Mastine was ninth.
“Winning the team title was great for the team,” Turowski said. “Our goal was to go undefeated, but unfortunately we lost to Indiana. It’s great to be the best team in the county.”
First-year Penn-Trafford coach Jeff Newsom said he couldn’t be prouder of the team.
“The kids played awesome,” Jeff Newsom said. “I am proud of them. I knew we had a chance as long as we kept the ball in the fairway and didn’t make a lot of mistakes.”
Greensburg Central Catholic won the Class 2A title with a 398. Belle Vernon was second with a 407.
Leading the way for the Centurions was Braden Riley, who placed second overall with a 74, and Mike Mullany, who finished eighth with a 77.
Scorecard playoffs decided the players tied with a 76 and 77.
Belle Vernon’s Jordan Mocello finished third with a 75, Latrobe’s Parker Berk was fourth with a 76 and Belle Vernon’s Seth Tomulski was fifth with a 76.
Latrobe’s J.M. Krajc took seventh with a 77, and Franklin Regional’s Luke Anderchak was 10th with a 77.
The Westmoreland County Coaches’ Association girls tournament is scheduled for Sept. 7 at Champion Lakes.
