High school roundup for Sept. 6, 2023: North Catholic finds winning goal vs. Quaker Valley

Lily Karsman scored the game’s lone goal and Rylee Kumer recorded the shutout to lead North Catholic to a 1-0 victory over Quaker Valley (3-1, 1-1) in Section 1-2A girls soccer Wednesday. Kathleen Virostek assisted on the winning goal for North Catholic (2-1, 2-1).
Ambridge 3, Hopewell 2 – Megan Conover had two goals and Mikayla Wetzel also scored to help Ambridge (1-2, 1-2) get past Hopewell (0-3, 0-3) in Section 1-2A.
Armstrong 1, Indiana 0 – The only goal of the game was the 50th of Mylea Riggle’s career as Armstrong (1-2, 1-2) defeated Indiana (2-3, 1-2) in Section 1-3A.
Avonworth 7, Central Valley 0 – Fiona Mahan had two goals and three assists, Gianna Babusci also scored twice, and Katie Petrina added a goal and two assists as Avonworth (5-0-1, 3-0) beat Central Valley (1-3-1, 1-1) in Section 1-2A. Allie Nau and Karalyn Kelleher also scored and Elena Zimmerman recorded the shutout.
Bethel Park 8, Hempfield 1 – Grace Ferency, Emma Impellicceiri, Mia Lancy, Callee Dalbon and Keira Mehalko were the goal scorers for Bethel Park (3-1-1, 2-1) in a Section 2-4A win against Hempfield (1-3, 0-3).
Charleroi 6, Beth-Center 2 – Bella Carrotto scored twice while Rhianna Grogan, Mylie French, Taylor Ramsdell and McKenna DeUnger each added a goal as Charleroi (5-0, 3-0) beat Beth-Center (1-3, 0-2) in Section 2-A. Paige Gilbert and Kendall Welsh were the Beth-Center goal scorers.
Chartiers-Houston 4, Waynesburg 1 – Amelia Brose scored twice, Ava Capozzoli had a goal and two assists, and Mia Reddix also scored to lead Chartiers-Houston (5-1, 2-1) in Section 2-A. Ella Miller scored for Waynesburg (3-2, 1-2).
Connellsville 3, Belle Vernon 1 – Grace Bosnic, Addie Bandemer and Halie Pletcher each scored for Connellsville (3-3, 2-1) in a Section 2-3A win over Belle Vernon (1-4, 0-3). Ava Scalise scored for the Leopards.
Deer Lakes 1, Karns City 1 – Claire Cacurak converted a penalty kick in the second half to help Deer Lakes (1-2-2) earn a draw in a nonsection game.
Franklin Regional 1, Gateway 0 – Abby Paterline scored the winning goal on an assist from Allyssa Velasquez and Franklin Regional (3-1, 2-0) defeated Gateway (1-2, 1-2) in Section 3-3A.
Greensburg Salem 1, Penn Hills 0 – Sabrina Kasic scored the only goal Greensburg Salem (1-3-1, 1-2) needed and goalkeeper Alice Wilkinson shut out Penn Hills (0-3, 0-3) in Section 3-3A.
Hampton 4, Kiski Area 0 – Olivia Hoffman scored a pair of goals while Adele Coke and Sara Kenst each added a goal for Hampton (3-1, 2-1) in a shutout of Kiski Area (2-4, 1-1) in Section 1-3A. Bella English kept a clean net for the shutout.
Keystone Oaks 7, Brownsville 1 – Aly Simon and Taylor Fife each scored twice while Emma Mathie, Emma Thiry and Bailey Barkley added a goal each to lead Keystone Oaks (3-1, 1-0) to a Section 4-2A win over Brownsville (0-4, 0-1).
Knoch 13, Valley 0 – Brooke Galcik had two goals and two assists, Macrina Robb scored twice, and Maggie Barnes, Emma Slusser and Laurel Hull each had a goal and an assist as Knoch (2-1, 2-0) blanked Valley (1-2, 0-2) in Section 2-2A.
Montour 5, Blackhawk 1 – Riley Hall had a hat trick to lead Montour (3-0, 2-0) to a Section 4-3A win over Blackhawk (2-2, 1-2).
Moon 5, West Allegheny 0 – Kendall Dydek scored twice, Sydney Felton had a goal and an assist, Marina Mollica and Elizabeth Gallup each buried a goal, and Luren Muhanna finished with two assists as Moon (4-0, 3-0) shut out West Allegheny (3-2, 1-2) in Section 4-3A.
Mt. Pleasant 13, East Allegheny 0 – Rylin Bugosh and Maggie Piper recorded hat tricks as Carly Piper and Morgan Gesinski each scored twice as Mt. Pleasant (2-2, 1-0) rolled East Allegheny (0-2, 0-1) in Section 3-2A. Emma Hatcher, Regan McCormick and Riley Gesinski also scored for the Vikings.
Peters Township 5, Baldwin 0 – Jordan Klein had two goals while Paige Malley, Lucia Trapanotto and Grace O’Korn also scored as Peters Township (3-0-1, 2-0-1) shut out Baldwin (1-3, 0-3) in Section 2-4A.
Plum 3, Latrobe 2 – Ava Weleski, Mia Nardo and Emily Grubich scored to lead Plum in a matchup of top teams in Section 3-3A. Annalyse Bauer and Robin Reilly scored for the Wildcats (2-1, 1-1). Rayla Smith and Gianna Revetta had assists for Plum (3-0, 3-0), which took over sole possession of first place.
Riverview 10, Serra Catholic 1 – Lola Abraham had four goals and three assists, Isabel Chaparro and Cailey Trosch each scored twice, and Mary Quinlan and Hannah Hudack scored a goal apiece as Riverview (2-1, 2-1) rolled Serra Catholic (2-1, 2-1) in Section 1-A. Lydia Reith scored for the Eagles.
Shady Side Academy 8, McGuffey 0 – Ella Van Norman scored a hat trick to lead Shady Side Academy (3-0, 1-0) past McGuffey (1-2, 0-1) in Section 4-2A.
South Park 5, West Mifflin 1 – Avery Rispoli scored two goals while Arianna Beck, Taylor Vargo and Madelynn Serechin each added a goal as South Park (3-1, 1-0) defeated West Mifflin (2-2, 0-1) in Section 4-2A.
Southmoreland 3, Woodland Hills 0 – Aubrey Seder scored a pair of goals and Megan Mehall added another for Southmoreland (2-1, 1-0) in a Section 3-2A victory against Woodland Hills (1-1, 0-1).
Springdale 3, Seton LaSalle 1 – Molly Hurley had two goals and an assist and Ashley Ross also scored to lead Springdale (3-0, 2-0) to a Section 1-A win over Seton LaSalle (1-2, 0-2). Briana Ross added a pair of assists for the Dynamos.
Upper St. Clair 6, Mt. Lebanon 0 – Sierra Dupre and Kate Moore each scored a pair and Abby Mascaro and Ellie Shanholtzer each added a goal as Upper St. Clair (5-0, 3-0) blanked Mt. Lebanon (3-2, 1-2) in Section 2-4A.
Yough 5, Ligonier Valley 0 – Katelyn Slavick netted four goals and Carly Fitzgibbons also scored as Yough (2-3, 1-0) blanked Ligonier Valley (0-2, 0-1) in Section 3-2A.
Boys soccer
Greensburg Central Catholic 2, Ligonier Valley 0 – Grant Brewer and Jackson Vacanti scored and Isaac House made five saves to record the shutout as Greensburg Central Catholic (2-2, 2-1) defeated Ligonier Valley (1-2, 0-2) in Section 2-A.
Field hockey
Penn-Trafford 10, Hempfield 0 – Makenzie Keenan had a hat trick and Liz Welsh scored a pair of goals to lead Penn-Trafford to a nonsection win. Alyssa Paulone, Ava Hershberger, Rilie Moors, Maura Spadone and Emma Chamberlin also scored.
Girls volleyball
Albert Gallatin 3, Uniontown 0 – Leah Myers had 17 kills and four aces, Mia Myers had 13 assists and Jocelyn Ellsworth added 14 assists to lead Albert Gallatin to a Section 3-3A win over Uniontown.
