What to watch for in WPIAL sports for Sept. 11, 2023: Girls soccer showdowns on tap

The first full week of high school sports in September begins with a couple of showdowns in WPIAL Class 3A girls soccer.

In Section 2-3A, there are three teams tied for first place. Laurel Highlands is 3-0 in section play, and Thomas Jefferson and Elizabeth Forward are 2-0.

The first of the three head-to-head matches between those three is Monday when Laurel Highlands hosts Thomas Jefferson.

The Mustangs are 4-1 overall and have allowed only four goals. The Jaguars have a 3-1 record and have averaged more than four goals a game.

In Section 4-3A, defending champion Moon takes its perfect record (3-0, 5-0) to Montour (2-0, 3-0-1), which received its only blemish in a nonsection tie with Plum.

The Tigers are not only undefeated, they have yet to give up a goal while averaging nearly four goals a contest.

Not very offensive

Two girls soccer teams hoping to find some more scoring square off against each other Monday when Brownsville visits McGuffey in a Section 4-2A match.

Both teams are looking for their first section victory and are an overall 1-6. The problem for both teams has been scoring.

In three games, the Highlanders have scored only 2 goals, and in four matches, the Falcons have scored three times.

The teams have combined to yield 40 goals.

Tennis anyone?

Between 2004 and 2012, the Quaker Valley girls tennis program won six WPIAL championships, including gold four years straight from 2004-07.

The Quakers are on an 11-year drought since winning the 2012 title.

Quaker Valley is tied for first place in Section 5-2A with Montour. On Monday they meet for the first time at Montour.

Last year, the Quakers and Spartans were upset in the first round of the Class 3A team playoffs.
