High school roundup for Nov. 20, 2023: Chartiers Valley beats Avonworth in battle of hockey unbeatens

Matthew Colberg made 24 saves to earn the shutout as Chartiers Valley defeated Avonworth, 3-0, in a battle of unbeaten teams in PIHL Class A hockey Monday night. Noah Callender, Tyler Held and Darien Strosnider scored for CV (8-0). Danny Mack made 28 saves for Avonworth (6-1).

Burrell 3, Connellsville 1 – Chantz Watkins, Julian Kemp and Aidan Petroff scored, John Lukac had a pair of assists, and Kooper Price made 21 saves for Burrell (5-2) in a Varsity D2 win. Ian Zerecheck scored and Nick Daniels-Nimick made 33 saves for Connellsville (1-6).

Deer Lakes 8, Knoch 2 – Ryan Grunden collected two goals and two assists and Mark Rauenswinter also scored twice as Deer Lakes (6-3) picked up a Varsity D2 win. Zachary Nacey added a goal and two assists. Ethan Keller had a goal and an assist for Knoch (3-3).

Hampton 6, Moon 5 – Daniel Leyes had three goals and two assists and Joey Stephenson collected three goals and one assist to lead Hampton (2-6) to a Class A victory. Eric Hartman scored twice for Moon (6-2).

Hempfield 3, Norwin 2 – Nick Eberhardt and Mats Martz scored goals 36 seconds apart late in the second period to lead Hempfield in Class 2A. Alex Smillie also scored for Hempfield (4-3). Mitch Soltysiak and Cal Costantino scored and Dom Costantino had two assists for Norwin (4-3-1).

Latrobe 6, North Hills 1 – Joey Crimboli scored a hat trick and added an assist to lead Latrobe (7-2) to a Class 2A victory. Jacob Hannah had a goal and an assist and Robert Rossi and Jackson Hayburn also scored. Joey Spivak had a goal for North Hills (0-8).

McDowell 8, Kiski 3 – Jacon Baniewicz had a hat trick and Dylan Payne scored twice to lead McDowell (3-3-1) to a Class A win. Ethan Bombalski had a pair of goals for Kiski (0-8).

Montour 4, Butler 3 – Thomas Barefoot had a goal and three assists and Jonah Camardese-Woodruff added a goal and an assist as Montour (2-7) held on for a Class A win. JJ Strilka and Aiden Moskovitz also scored. Jack Johnson, Brayden Hardsock and Owen Denny scored for Butler (3-6).

Quaker Valley 2, Mars 0 – Landon Buterbaugh made 40 saves to earn the shutout as Quaker Valley (8-0) blanked Mars (4-4) in Class A. Ben McHenry and Charlie Pyle scored and Will Watson dished out a pair of assists.

Wheeling Park 4, Freeport 3 (OT) – Owen Abraham scored the game-winner in the first minute of overtime and Luke Dunaway added a goal and two assists for Wheeling Park (6-3) in a Class A win. Zach Bowser had a goal and an assist for Freeport (1-5-3).

Wilmington 4, Sewickley Academy 1 – Andrew Cartwright scored twice and Shane Bayuk and Nate Pitzer added goals for Wilmington (2-4) in a Varsity D2 victory. Ethan Buranovsky scored for Sewickley Academy (0-6-1).
