High school roundup for Dec. 9, 2023: Penn Hills, Gateway win at Central Catholic tournament

Khalil Wall scored 16 points to lead Penn Hills to a 55-53 boys basketball win over Moon at the Jack Twyman Tournament at Central Catholic on Saturday.

Robert Thomas added 14 points and Lamire Redman had 10 for Penn Hills (1-1). Elijah Guillory had a game-high 23 for Moon (1-2) and Aiden Reesman scored 12.

Gateway 49, Central Catholic 44 – Vito Campolo had 16 points and Alex Dunsmore scored 14 to help Gateway (4-1) get by host Central Catholic (0-2) at the Jack Twyman Tournament. Bradley Gompers led the Vikings with 13 points.

Burrell 62, Jeannette 49 – Macky Bennis and Tucker Bitar scored 19 points each to lead Burrell (3-0) to win over Jeannette (3-2) at the WCCA Showcase. Esau King-Bouchak added 10 points for the Bucs. Markus McGowan scored 14, Jayce Powell 13 and Noah Sunder 12 for the Jayhawks.

Central Valley 53, Union 51 (OT) – Isaiah Jeter had 26 points and Central Valley (1-2) outlasted Union (0-3) in overtime at The Clash at New Castle. Jude Coombs scored 12 for the Warriors. Braylon Thomas (19), Grayson Blakley (16) and Lucas Stanley (15) were in double figures for the Scotties.

Chartiers Valley 100, Jefferson (Ohio) 83 – Jayden Davis had 29 points, Julian Semplice scored 23 and Chariters Valley (2-2) hit the century mark on the scoreboard in a win at the Marsha Marsh Roundball Classic in Erie. Danny Slizik and Rudy Morris added 11 points each for the Colts and Jake Lewis scored 10. Joe DeGeorge poured in 45 points for Jefferson.

Cheswick Christian Academy 68, Trinity Christian 56 – Grant Rochkind had a double-double with 20 points and 14 rebounds to lead Cheswick Christian 4-1to a nonsection win. Sean Louis added 18 points and Joseph Rosio chipped in with 13. David Blackburn scored 21 and Darnell Kyte added 18 for Trinity Christian.

Derry 73, Mt. Pleasant 56 – Nate Papuga scored 33 points to lead Derry (3-1) over Mt. Pleasant (0-2) in the WCCA Showcase at Jeannette. Brady Angus added 14 points and five assists for Derry while teammate Stan Rajkovich had 13 points and 10 rebounds. Dante Giallanardo led the Vikings with 17 points.

Franklin Regional 43, Seneca Valley 39 – Connor Crossley had nine points as tournament host Franklin Regional (4-0) beat Seneca Valley (2-2) in the championship game of the Mike Rettger Memorial Tournament. Kai West and Owen Congdon tallied 14 and 13 points, respectively, for Seneca Valley.

Greenville 57, Laurel 33 – Soren Hedderick had 18 points to lead Greenville to the nonsection win against Laurel (1-2).

Greensburg Central Catholic 55, Greensburg Salem 45 At the WCCA Showcase at Hempfield, Tyree Turner had 20 points and Franco Alvarez added 16 as the Centurions (4-1) held back crosstown foe Greensburg Salem (1-3). Ryan Burkhart had 15 points and AJ Tarpley added 10 for the Golden Lions, who trailed 41-36 heading to the fourth quarter.

Knoch 62, Grove City 49 – Teegan Finucan scored 24 points, Zane Pacek added 12, and Derek Lang finished with 11 to lead Knoch (3-1) to a win at The Clash at New Castle. Christian Kurz led Grove City with 14 points.

North Allegheny 73, Susquehanna Township 47 – Joe Dopirak poured in 36 points to help North Allegheny (1-2) cruise past Susquehanna Township at the York Suburban tournament. Ty Iwanokiw scored 15 for the Tigers.

Southmoreland 77, Ligonier Valley 35 – Noah Felentzer led three Scotties in double figures with 17 points in a win at the WCCA Showcase at Hempfield. Ty Keffer scored 16 and Wyatt Richter added 15. Southmoreland (3-0) outscored Ligonier Valley, 31-5, in the second half. Parker Hollick had 11 points for the Rams (2-2).

West Allegheny 61, Brashear 32 – Brandon Bell’s 17 points led West Allegheny (5-0) in its nonsection win against Brashear (2-2). Tyler Blatz, Justin Manns and Leo Walsh all added 10 points for West Allegheny while Titus Gillett scored a game-high 23 points for Brashear.

West Mifflin 72,. Laurel Highlands 45 – Daven Reynolds scored 21 points as West Mifflin (2-2) beat Laurel Highlands (1-3) in the consolation game of the Mike Rettger Memorial Tournament. Aaron Smith added 17 points while Brandon Battles and Braeden Walker chipped in 11 points each. Antwan Black scored 13 points for Laurel Highlands.

Yough 65, Monessen 47 – At the WCCA Showcase at Hempfield, Terek Crosby scored 36 points to lead Yough (4-1) to victory over Monessen (1-1). Austin Matthews added 18 points for Yough. Lorenzo Gardner led Monessen with 16 points while Devontae Robinson contributed 15 points.

Girls basketball

Aquinas Academy 56, Portersville Christian 46 – Emily Fisher hit five 3-pointers and had 19 points for Aquinas Academy (5-0) in a nonsection win. Violet Johnson finished with 12 points and Victoria Taylor scored 11.

Baltimore Polytechnic 49, Greensburg Central Catholic 38 Erica Gribble scored 12 points and Jayla Peterson added 1o in a loss for Greensburg Central Catholic (2-1) at the She Got Game Classic in Virginia.

Bishop Canevin 52, California 37 – Isabella Sysak scored 27 points to lead Bishop Canevin (2-2) to the nonsection win against California (1-2). Rakiyah Porter scored 23 points for California.

Blackhawk 61, Harvest Prep 27 – Alena Fusetti had 26 points and hit six 3-pointers to pace Blackhawk (3-1) in a win at the Archbishop Hoban Hoopfest in Ohio. Aubree Hupp scored 13 for the Cougars.

Laurel 49, New Castle 47 – Shyan Tindall hit four 3-pointers on the way to scoring 16 points as Laurel (2-3) held off New Castle (0-5) in the Clash at New Castle. Macey Cwynar and Jael Henderson added 10 points each for Laurel while Rihanna Boice scored a game-high 24 points for New Castle.

Morgantown 74, Albert Gallatin 26 – Kayli Kellogg scored 22 points to lead Morgantown over Albert Gallatin (0-3) in nonsection play. Lily Jordan added 15 points for Morgantown while Mikayla Shea scored 16 points for Albert Gallatin.

North Allegheny 64, Toledo Central Catholic 48 – Lydia Betz had 25 points to lead North Allegheny (3-0) to victory at the Archbishop Horan tournament in Ohio. Kellie McConnell and Rae Shanahan added 12 points apiece for the Tigers.

Norwin 58, CB West 24 – Lauren Palangio scored 14 points and Ava Kobus added 11 to lead Norwin (3-1) at the State College tip-off tournament.

Shady Side Academy 60, Baldwin 51 – Karis Thomas had 22 points and Maggie Spell added 19 points as Shady Side Academy defeated Baldwin in nonsection play. Katie Lucarelli paced Baldwin with 22 points while Mary Vargo added 16 points.

Wrestling

Butler Girls Tournament – Behind victories by Audrey Morrison (142) and Kaylee Dean (235), North Allegheny took home the team title. Peters Township also had two champions in Grace O’Korn (148) and Liliana Guilianelli (190). Seneca Valley’s Sara Breeger (100), Mt. Lebanon’s Paige Jox (118), Connellsville’s Trinity Moore (124), Woodland Hills’ Asia Fowler (130), Kiski Area’s Ava Golding (136) won their respective weight classes.

McCallie Invitational – The Burrell wrestling team traveled to Tennessee and came home with three individual championships and a second-place finish in the team standings. Cam Baker (113), Cooper Hornack (144) and Isaac Lacinski (175) won titles in their respective weight classes. Calio Zanella was the runner-up at 138.

Walsh Ironman – Frazier’s Rune Lawrence advanced to the finals of the tournament hosted by Walsh Jesuit in Ohio before medically forfeiting to top-seeded Jude Correa of Wyoming Seminary. Frazier, the third seed, made the finals by recording four first-period pins then beating second-seeded Max Shulaw of St. Francis DeSales, 10-5, in the semifinals. Canon-McMillan’s Andrew Binni finished eighth at 126 pounds.
