High school roundup for Jan. 23, 2024: South Allegheny hands 1st loss to Uniontown boys

Mike Michalski scored 20 points to help South Allegheny to a 54-44 nonsection boys basketball victory Tuesday night, handing Class 4A No. 2 Uniontown its first loss of the season.

Jeston Beatty added 11 for South Allegheny (11-5). Jamire Braxton scored 19 points and Notorious Grooms had 13 for Uniontown (13-1).

Baldwin 57, Trinity 50 – Nathan Wesling put up 21 points to pace Baldwin (12-3) in a nonsection win over Trinity (7-9). Jacob Dunkle produced 27 points for the Hillers.

Beaver 75, Hopewell 41 – Brady Mayo led all scorers with 30 points, Ty Butler finished with 15 and Nick Krzeczowski had 13 points as Beaver (8-9, 4-4) dropped Hopewell (6-9, 0-7) in Section 2-4A. Mason Showrank scored 19 points and Ty Butler netted 15 for the Vikings.

Brownsville 51, Waynesburg 31 – Trenton Wible led all scorers with 24 points and Harlan Davis added 14 for Brownsville (6-11, 1-6) in a Section 4-3A win. Alex Vansickle scored nine points to pace Waynesburg (4-11, 1-6).

Burgettstown 56, Carmichaels 48 – Zack Schrockman scored 23 points, James Leuice had 12 and Carson Tkalcevic added 11 to lead Burgettstown (13-5, 6-2) to a Section 4-2A win. Dominic Colarusso led Carmichaels (3-12, 0-7) with 14 points.

Burrell 68, Ligonier Valley 50 – Macky Bennis scored 23 points and Tucker Bitar added 13 to push Burrell (11-3, 6-2) to a Section 3-3A win. Michael Wisniewski scored 14 points for Ligonier Valley (3-11, 1-5).

Butler 55, Hampton 52 – Braylon Littlejohn led Butler (12-2) with 24 points and Donovan Carney added 17 in a nonsection win. Peter Kramer scored 31 points and Alex Nyilas had nine for Hampton (13-3).

Carrick 72, California 42 – Brayden Fisher scored 23 points and Delenn Ward and Ray Saunders added 13 points apiece for Carrick (6-9) in a nonsection win. Jacob Ziolecki led California (4-12) with 12 points and Noah Neil had 11.

Central Valley 56, Blackhawk 41 – Isaiah Jeter dropped 24 points and Mikel Anderson scored 17 for Central Valley (9-5, 3-3) in a Section 2-4A win against Blackhawk (4-12, 1-6). Tyler Heckathorn had 18 points and Nate Franitti added 12 for the Cougars.

Clairton 61, Riverview 51 – Taris Wooding scored 21 points, Bryant Blair added 12 and Clairton (8-9, 5-3) used a 26-9 run in the third quarter to take a Section 3-2A win. Nate Sprajcar scored 21 and Alex Schultheis added 18 for Riverview (6-10, 1-7).

Ellwood City 54, Neshannock 47 – Joseph Roth scored 31 points to lead Ellwood City (10-6, 5-2) to a Section 1-3A win. David Kwiat led Neshannock (13-3, 6-2) with 13 points and Matt Sopko had 11.

Fort Cherry 77, Bentworth 51 – Derek Errett dropped 27 points while Shane Cornali and Blake Sweder each had 12 as Fort Cherry (12-4, 7-0) had 10 players score in a Section 4-2A win. Lucas Burt scored 17 points and Ben Hays added 12 for Bentworth (3-12, 2-6).

Freeport 71, East Allegheny 63 – Brady Sullivan scored 21 points and Gavin Glista finished with 18 for Freeport (4-11) in a nonsection win. Brennan Rutledge scored 21 for East Allegheny (3-13).

Hempfield 59, Pine-Richland 49 – Max Williams put up 17 points, Danny Husentis hit for 16, Drew Gooden added 13 and Aaron Woodley followed with 10 in a nonsection win for Hempfield (4-13). Carson Baer led all scorers with 20 for Pine-Richland (6-8).

Highlands 78, Bishop Canevin 70 – Cam Reigard scored 26 points and Bradyn Foster added 22 to help Highlands (10-5) to a nonsection victory. Ali Shareef added 15 for the Golden Rams. Jason Cross led Bishop Canevin (7-7) with 27 points. Michael Vaughn added 15 and Drew Allen had 13.

Indiana 69, Connellsville 40 – Mark Collinger put up 16 points, Evan Brocious scored 14 and Aaron Webb added 12 in a nonsection win for Indiana (8-7). Bruce Giles paced Connellsville (2-14) with 10 points.

Jefferson-Morgan 55, Avella 53 – Dayten Marion led all scorers with 23 points and John Woodward chipped in with 10 to lead Jefferson-Morgan (11-6) to a nonsection win. Bryce Wright scored 16 points, Rylan Bell followed with 14 and Westley Burchianti finished with 10 for Avella (8-9).

Keystone Oaks 67, Steel Valley 32 – Dante More and Erond Jakupi scored 14 points apiece, Luc Phillistine had 11 and Dimajio LoCante added 10 for Keystone Oaks (5-11, 4-4) in a Section 2-3A win. Nyhjir Norris led Steel Valley (0-14, 0-6) with 15 points.

Kiski Area 77, Knoch 76 (OT) – Isaiah Gonzalez scored 28 points to lead Kiski Area (11-5) to a nonsection overtime victory. Colin Keller added 19 and Carson Heinle had 15 for the Cavaliers. Jackson Bauman led Knoch (11-5) with 25 points. Teegan Finucan added 19, Derek Lang finished with 16 and Zane Pacek contributed 14 for the Knights.

Lincoln Park 85, Ambridge 50 – Meleek Thomas led all scorers with 26 points, Brandin Cummings followed with 22, Mikey Crawford added 14 and Rhaki Lum had 11 as Lincoln Park (13-3, 7-0) triumphed over Ambridge (6-11, 3-4) in Section 2-4A. Jared Astorino scored 18 points, Julien Hubbard finished with 11 and Ethan Mycyk had 10 for the Bridgers.

Mohawk 63, Freedom 21 – Bobby Fadden scored 17 points to lead Mohawk (11-6, 7-0) to a Section 1-3A win over Freedom (0-15, 0-7).

Montour 69, Mars 48 – Jake Wolfe scored 21 points and Ama Sow had 13 to push Montour (12-2) past Mars (9-7) in a nonsection matchup. Ryan Ceh led the Planets with 21 points.

Mt. Lebanon 62, Bethel Park 43 – Nate Girod led Mt. Lebanon (13-3) with 25 points and five 3-pointers and Liam Sheely had 11 points and three 3-pointers in a nonsection win. Shawn Davis scored 12 points for Bethel Park (8-8).

Nazareth Prep 63, Perry 29 – Leon Harrison scored 12 points and Khylil Johnson added 11 for Nazareth Prep (5-7) in a nonsection win. Jordan Roldan scored 12 for Perry (2-11).

North Hills 78, Penn-Trafford 72 – Eric James led all scorers with 35 points, Nathan Schanbacher put up 23 and Zach Pollaro added 14 as North Hills (7-7) beat Penn-Trafford (8-9) in nonsection play. Tyler Freas made four 3-pointers and had 27 points while Evan Gross tacked on 10 for the Warriors.

Norwin 55, Laurel Highlands 38 – Noah Wilson scored 18 points, including 14 in the fourth quarter, to lead Norwin (7-8) to a nonsection win. Dylan McCullough added 12 for the Knights. Aiden Black and Ethan Koffler scored 12 each for Laurel Highlands (2-15).

Penn Hills 55, Gateway 48 – Robert Thomas put up 23 points and pulled down 17 rebounds and Amon Hawthorne scored 14 points for Penn Hills (9-5, 2-3) in a nonsection contest. Bryson Pavlik finished with 13 points and Alec Dunsmore had 11 for Gateway (11-3, 4-1).

Peters Township 80, Elizabeth Forward 61 – Jack Dunbar dropped 21 points, Nick McCullough added 16, Nate Miller made four 3-pointers and finished with 15 points, and Dylan Donovan also had 15 for Peters (12-4) in a nonsection win. Charlie Meehleib scored 20 points and Isaiah Turner produced 13 for Elizabeth Forward (9-6).

Riverside 63, Cornell 39 – McCartney Plassmeyer led Riverside (6-11) with 16 points and Rob Janis added 12 in a nonsection win. Julian Cordice scored 14 points and Santana Lee had 10 for Cornell (5-10).

Rochester 87, Aquinas Academy 77 – Xavier Rigby led all scorers with 29 points, Jayvin Hemer finished with 20, Brady Gorman added 12 and Nathan Bills chipped in 11 as Rochester (9-5) beat Aquinas Academy (9-5) in nonsection play. Jacob Guillen put up 28 points, Sam Duer dropped 23 and Jonah Burchill had 10 for the Crusaders.

Seton LaSalle 52, South Park 46 (OT) – Hayden Merchant scored 17 points and Ian March added 10 to push Seton LaSalle (12-3, 7-0) to a Section 2-3A win. Luke Scarff led South Park (9-7, 3-4) with 19 points.

Shady Side Academy 68, Apollo-Ridge 21 – Eli Teslovich scored 14 points and Ben Michaels and Ryan Frohlich added 13 each for Shady Side Academy (8-6, 5-2) in a Section 3-3A win. Mykel Hardmon led Apollo-Ridge (2-15, 0-7) with seven.

Shaler 53, North Allegheny 38 – Kaden Orga and Zach London scored 14 points apiece and Joey DeSabato had 10 for Shaler (15-2) in a nonsection win. Joey Dopirak led North Allegheny (6-10) with 18 points and Joe Marquis had 10.

Southmoreland 72, Valley 56 – Ty Keffer went off for 43 points to lead Southmoreland (14-3) over Valley (4-10) in nonsection play. Jake Staraniec put up 25 points, Tayshawn Hawkins had 13 and Keyziyah Clay added 11 for the Vikings.

St. Joseph 67, Geibel 48 – Gabe Maltese scored 24 points and Anthony Zavolta added 22 to power St. Joseph (3-13) to a nonsection win. Cole Spenser chipped in 10. Tommy Kolencik scored 18 and Mike Miller added 14 for Geibel (0-17).

Sto-Rox 62, Brentwood 58 (OT) – David Johnson scored 16 points and Shalen Burton added 11 for Sto-Rox (5-9, 3-4) in a Section 2-3A win. Forrest Betz led Brentwood (4-13, 2-6) with 15 points and Aiden Gordon had 12.

Turkeyfoot Valley 73, Mapletown 61 – Bryce Nicholson scored 38 points and Zack Ryan chipped in 10 to help Turkeyfoot Valley to a nonsection win. Jeremiah Mick scored 24 and Roger Gradek added 10 for Mapletown (2-12).

Upper St. Clair 50, Fox Chapel 40 – Tyler Robbins hit for 14 points and Brett Meinert netted 13 for Upper St. Clair (11-4) in a nonsection victory. Caden Kaiser led Fox Chapel (9-8) with 11 points.

Washington 68, Charleroi 34 – Braiden Wise scored 14 points and Ruben Gordon followed with 13 as Washington (10-5, 7-0) defeated Charleroi (6-11, 2-6) in Section 4-3A. Jackson Keranko had nine points to lead the Cougars.

West Mifflin 61, Ringgold 57 – David Fleming scored 24 points and Brandon Battles added 11 to push West Mifflin (9-6) to a nonsection win. Szyair Dungee and Keyshawn Goggins scored 13 points apiece and Daryl Tolliver and Aidan Angotti had 12 points apiece for Ringgold (3-13).

Girls basketball

Fox Chapel 54, New Castle 20 – Natalia Schaffer led all scorers with 20 points, Bella Urso finished with 17 points and Lyla Jablon added 10 as Fox Chapel (5-12, 3-5) defeated New Castle (2-15, 0-8) in Section 2-5A. Rihanna Boice led the Red Hurricanes with nine points.

Indiana 49, Kiski Area 37 – Bella Antonucci scored 21 points and Stella Stossel added nine to lead Indiana (12-3, 7-0) to a Section 1-5A win. Abbie Johns led Kiski Area (5-11, 1-6) with 18 points.

Latrobe 58, Hempfield 43 – Elle Snyder scored 21 points to lead Latrobe (8-10) to a nonsection win. Carley Berk added 11 and Maggie Maiers finished with 10 for the Wildcats. Sarah Podkul scored 14 and Allie Cervola had 10 for Hempfield (7-9).

Laurel Highlands 52, Greensburg Salem 29 – Ayrianna Sumpter scored 19 points and Aierra Jenkins had 18 for Laurel Highlands (15-1) in a nonsection win. Kait Mankins scored 13 points for Greensburg Salem (13-4).

Leechburg 48, Hillel Academy 11 – Adalyn Zanotto dropped 20 points and Josalyn Collini added eight for Leechburg (6-6, 2-2) in a Section 3-1A win. Esti Jacobs had six points for Hillel Academy (0-8, 0-5).

Monessen 46, Frazier 35 – Avanti Stitch scored 19 points to lead Monessen (10-3) to a nonsection win. Allie Yauch led Frazier (5-12) with 15 points and Chloe Harger had 10.

Peters Township 51, Baldwin 41 – Gemma Walker scored 18 points and Natalie Wetzel put up 16 to lead Peters Township (17-0, 8-0) to a Section 2-6A win. Lynsey Bernatos had 10 points to lead Baldwin (8-9, 1-7).

Serra Catholic 36, South Park 35 – Nikki Sfanos led Serra Catholic (13-3) with 13 points in a nonsection win. Addy Kerr and Hayley Bennett scored 11 points apiece for South Park (10-6).

Southmoreland 41, Bentworth 37 – Bea Pawlikowsky scored 15 points to lead Southmoreland (2-14) to a nonsection win. Amber Sallee scored 17 for Bentworth (4-13).

Montour 51, Carlynton 21 – Anthony Esposito (121), Jacob Chacon (133) and Anthony Orlandini (145) recorded pins and Jacob Stetz (127) won a decision as Montour (5-1, 4-1) beat Carlynton (2-5, 2-3) in Section 2-3A. Ethan Moldovan (114), Jermell Lindsey (172) and Henry Barbisch (285) had pins and Braiden Sudor won a decision for the Cougars.

Girls

Canon-McMillan 60, North Allegheny 18 – Malia Ramos (118), Yuden Ayala (124), Bailey Emery (136), Dynisty Williams (170), Audrey Calgaro (190) and Natalie Rush (235) recorded pins in a win for Canon-McMillan. Audrey Morrison (142), Maya Scott (148) and Leyna Rumpler (155) had pins for North Allegheny.

Hockey

Cathedral Prep 3, Central Catholic 0 – Matthias Sprickman and Tanner Ball made 31 saves to lead Cathedral Prep (6-8-1) to a Class 3A win over Central Catholic (7-8). Caleb Dacus and Ethan Cunningham added empty net goals.

Greensburg Salem 11, Kiski Area 5 – Hunter Webb, Carter Cherok and Jake Fink each recorded a hat trick while Mikey Kingerski and Chase Kushner scored a goal apiece to lead Greensburg Salem (9-5-2) to a Class A victory. Ethan Bombalski had a hat trick and Jonah Endlich and Matt Behrik each scored a goal for Kiski (0-17).

Mars 4, North Catholic 3 – William Matusek had two goals and Gavin Stevenson and Luke Olshenske also scored to help Mars (11-4) to a Class A win. Anthony Neely, Jacob Godon and Carson Paglia scored for North Catholic (11-4-1).

Neshannock 7, Trinity 4 – Giovanni Valentine and Nick Bucci scored two goals apiece and John Moniodes added a goal and an assist to lead Neshannock (11-2-1) to a Varsity D2 win. Kory Taylor had two goals and an assist and Seamus Coyle also scored twice for Trinity (1-12).

Peters Township 5, Baldwin 2 – Luca Maietta scored a hat trick while Matthew Scouvart and Charlie Caputo each added a goal for Peters Township (9-4-2) in a Class 3A matchup. Tanner Plinta and Logan Cramer scored for Baldwin (1-11-2).
