The Fox Chapel wrestling team demonstrated in the quarterfinals of the WPIAL Class 3A team tournament what it has shown all season. The Foxes weren’t going to be an easy out for any team.
A week after sealing its first section title since the early 1970s, Fox Chapel won its opening match in the WPIAL playoffs Jan. 31 by beating Peters Township in the first round, 37-24.
The Foxes fell to Connellsville, 33-24, later that night in the quarterfinals. Alexander Kaufmann (152), Daniel Noel (127) and Andrew Kratsa (145) had pins and Joseph Geller (189) and D’Angelo Hamilton (285) won by decision.
Fox Chapel will look to regroup before the individual postseason begins with section tournaments Feb. 16-17.
Records fall
Mason Miles gave Fox Chapel’s throwers a good benchmark to hit early in the indoor track season season, highlighting the team’s effort in a big performance at the TSTCA Meet 4.
Miles threw the shot put 52 feet, 6 inches to finish in first place and set a school record. But the Foxes wouldn’t be done rewriting the school history books. The boys distance medley relay, consisting of Rowan Gwin, Michael Costello, Aden Ortiz and Doug Black, finished in third place with a time of 10:49.16, another school record.
The girls 800 relay also set a school record with a time of 1:51.53. Anna Kintner, Alyssa Quakenbush, Taylor Wilkinson and Anna Troutman competed for Fox Chapel.
Troutman also won the high jump with a leap of 5-4.
Back on track
The Fox Chapel boys basketball team has been hanging tough in a difficult section. The Foxes had to shake off a three-game losing streak in the middle of January before rebounding with a 70-55 win over Plum.
The Foxes are in second place in the section, in a good spot to reach the playoffs.
Swimmers heat up
Fox Chapel’s girls swimming team has been on a long hot streak in the pool. The Foxes have won six straight duals, including a win over North Hills on Jan. 30. Fox Chapel is 8-2 this season.
The boys team wasn’t far behind. Fox Chapel has won four straight duals to improve to 6-4.
