High school roundup for Feb. 3, 2023: Imani Christian tops Neighborhood Academy in battle of 1 vs. 2

Nate Brazil scored 18 points to lead No. 1 Imani Christian to a 72-56 victory over No. 2 Neighborhood Academy in a Section 3-A clash Saturday between the top two teams in the Trib HSSN Class A boys basketball rankings.

RJ Sledge added 17 points for the Saints (8-9, 7-0). Courtney Wallace had a double-double with 27 points and 11 rebounds for Neighborhood Academy (14-5, 6-2).

Albert Gallatin 60, Carrick 56 – Blake White had 16 points while Shymere Wilson added 15 as Albert Gallatin (8-9) beat Carrick (7-12) in nonsection play. Ethan Kennedy and Tyrone Burton contributed 12 and 10 points, respectively, for Albert Gallatin while Carrick’s Brayden Fisher led all scorers with 23 points.

Avonworth 52, Sewickley Academy 31 – Noah Goetz scored 13 points to help Avonworth (13-6) to a win at the Win Palmer Memorial Classic. Lucas Grimsley scored 11 for Sewickley Academy (11-7).

Berlin-Brothersvalley 89, Bishop Canevin 62 – Pace Prosser racked up 38 points to lead Berlin-Brothersvalley to a nonsection win. Craig Jarvis added 26 and Mac Foor had 16. Michael Vaughn scored 23 and Drew Allen followed with 21 for Bishop Canevin (9-9).

Cheswick Christian Academy 76, Cornerstone Prep 38 – Brady Rochkind scored 20 points and Grant Rochkind followed with 19 to lead Cheswick Christian (14-3) to a Southwestern Christian Athletic Conference win. Joseph Rosio added 15 and Sean Louis had 12. Lorenzo Boidi led Cornerstone Christian with 20 points.

Eden Christian 67, Quaker Valley 55 – Luke Gronbeck scored 25 points, including five 3-pointers, to lead Eden Christian (10-8) to a win at the Win Palmer Memorial Classic. Brady Hull added 14 points and Nathan Garrett had 13 for Eden. Joe Coyle hit six 3-pointers and scored 28 points for the Quakers (10-9).

Gateway 73, Belle Vernon 63 – Alex Lowry hit five 3-pointers on the way to scoring 30 points to lead Gateway (14-5) to a nonsection victory over Belle Vernon (11-6). Vito Campolo added 15 points for Gateway while Bryson Pavlik chipped in 12 points. Zion Moore scored a game-high 34 points and hit nine 3-pointers for Belle Vernon while Trevor Kovatch contributed 16 points.

Highlands 70, Deer Lakes 65 (OT) – Cam Reigard scored 21 points and Ali Shareef added 16 as Highlands earned a nonsection win. Bradyn Foster had 14 points and Jordyn Tavarez finished with 12 for the Golden Rams (13-6). Nathaniel Moore collected 28 points and 17 rebounds for the Lancers (16-3). Wayne Love added 17 points. After Deer Lakes jumped out to a 20-16 lead after one quarter, the score was tied at the end of the second, third and fourth quarters.

Serra Catholic 71, Jeannette 65 – Owen Dumbroski scored 20 points to lead Serra Catholic to a Section 3-2A victory. Mekhi Underwood added 17, Pete Burke finished with 15 and Isiah Petty had 11 for the Eagles (13-6, 7-4). Kymone Brown led all scorers with 26 points for the Jayhawks (12-7, 7-3). Markus McGowan had 14 and Noah Sunder chipped in 10.

Sto-Rox 77, Westinghouse 44 – Marcus Griffin scored 20 points and Aumir Nelson added 14 to power Sto-Rox (10-10) to a nonsection win. Terrell Wofford scored a game-high 26 for Westinghouse (1-12).

Waynesburg 58, California 38 – Alex Van Sickle scored 19 points, including five 3-pointers, and Austin Surber and Alex Eck added 12 points each to propel Waynesburg (7-13) to a nonsection win. Hunter Brown led California (6-14) with 10 points.

Girls basketball

Avonworth 73, Beaver Falls 41 – Rebecca Goetz scored 19 points, reaching the 1,000-point mark for her career, to lead Avonworth (17-1) to victory at the Win Palmer Memorial Classic. Emma Obersteiner added 18 and Greta O’Brien had 17 for the ‘Lopes. Avina Norman led Beaver Falls (13-5) with 25 points.

Cornerstone Prep 31, Cheswick Christian Academy 27 – Abi Leon Vargas scored 14 points to lead Cornerstone Prep. Abby Louis scored nine points for Cheswick Christian.

Pine-Richland 42, North Catholic 34 – Cate Gentile scored 19 points to lead Pine-Richland (7-11) to a nonsection win against North Catholic (13-6). Madison Zavasky added 12 points for Pine-Richland while Brady Wehner paced North Catholic with 14 points. Alayne Rocco, who has averaged 19 points per game this season, did not play.

Riverview 50, Monessen 25 – Isabel Chaparro scored 15 points — all on 3-pointers — as Riverview (14-5) doubled up Monessen (14-4) in a nonsection game. The loss snapped Monessen’s eight-game winning streak.

Rochester 51, Hopewell 41 – Tia Yellock scored 14 points and Aleaya Mercier added 10 to lead Rochester (12-7) to a win at the Win Palmer Memorial Classic. Maya Richburg led Hopewell (9-10) with 11 points.

Sewickley Academy 47, Eden Christian 34 – Libby Eannarino scored 25 points while her sister, Emma, had 12 points as host Sewickley Academy (7-11) beat Eden Christian (8-12) at the Win Palmer Memorial Classic.

Trinity 64, Albert Gallatin 29 – Ruby Morgan scored 14 points as Trinity (15-5) beat Albert Gallatin (4-16) in nonsection play. Sutton Williamson and Kimari Behrens added 10 points each for Trinity while Mya Gilson totaled 10 points to lead Albert Gallatin.
