High school roundup for Feb. 8, 2024: Trinity beats Lincoln Park to grab share of section title

Maddy Roberts scored 11 points to lead Trinity to a 32-29 victory over Lincoln Park in Section 4-5A girls basketball Thursday night, clinching a share of the section title with the Leopards.

Ruby Morgan added 10 for the Hillers (17-5, 8-2). Maddie Syka scored 11 points and Sarah Scott had 10 for Lincoln Park (19-2, 8-2).

Avonworth 54, Seton LaSalle 42 – Rebecca Goetz and Greta O’Brien scored 14 points apiece to lead Avonworth (19-1, 10-0) past Seton LaSalle (12-8, 6-4) in Section 2-3A, wrapping up an undefeated section season for the ‘Lopes. Mallory Daly dropped 28 points to lead the Rebels.

Bethel Park 50, Upper St. Clair 32 – Ella Sabatos scored 19 points and Ella Harmon added 10 to lead Bethel Park (9-12, 5-7) to a Section 2-6A win. Olivia Terlecki scored 10 points for Upper St. Clair (12-10, 6-6).

Blackhawk 63, Beaver 22 – Alena Fusetti led Blackhawk (19-2, 10-0) with 17 points and Aubree Hupp added 14 in a Section 2-4A win, eliminating Beaver (7-13, 4-6) from playoff contention.

Burgettstown 58 Carlynton 7 – Kaitlyn Nease dropped 31 points for Burgettstown (12-9, 8-1) in a Section 2-2A win over Carlynton (6-14, 2-8).

Burrell 56, Deer Lakes 28 – Casey Brancato scored 16 points, Anna Clark had 12, McKenna Miller added 11 and Jules Fisher finished with 10 to lead Burrell (16-4, 8-2) to a Section 3-3A win. Nine Tristani scored eight points for Deer Lakes (4-17, 0-10).

California 71, Frazier 43 – Rakiyah Porter scored her 1,000th career point and finished the game with 22 while Hayley Gibson put up 29 as California (10-11, 7-5) rolled Frazier (5-16, 2-10) in Section 4-2A. Allie Yauch led the Commodores with 13 points and Gabriella McGavitt had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Central Valley 47, Quaker Valley 43 – Nyah Hayes scored 13 points and Lily Seese added nine to lead Central Valley (9-10, 6-4) to a Section 2-4A win. Mimi Thiero led Quaker Valley (5-15, 5-5) with 22 points and Madison Chapman had 11.

Cheswick Christian 29, Cornerstone Prep 28 – Allie Szramowski and Abby Louis each scored nine points as Cheswick Christian (7-7, 5-1) clinched the Greater Pittsburgh Division title in the Southwest Christian Athletic Conference. Abi Leon Vargos and Ann Bartram scored eight points apiece for Cornerstone.

Elizabeth Forward 72, West Mifflin 33 – Chloe Zombek led Elizabeth Forward (19-2, 12-0) with 22 points, Alyssa Terza followed with 16, Kaelynn Settles added 13 and Mia Sostaric had 12 in a Section 3-4A win, finishing the section schedule unbeaten. Savaughn Wimbs scored 20 points for West Mifflin (10-8, 8-4).

Ellwood City 52, Laurel 22 – Claire Noble led Ellwood City (15-7, 7-3) with 18 points, Delaney Sturgeon added 12 and Kayla Jones had 11 in a Section 1-3A win. Shyan Tindall scored eight points for Laurel (4-17, 1-9).

Freedom 69, New Brighton 22 – Shaye Bailey scored 30 points and Riley Tokar had eight to lead Freedom (12-10, 9-3) to a Section 1-2A win.Essie Hilton scored eight points for New Brighton (0-19, 0-12).

Fort Cherry 53, Sto-Rox 14 – Katie Blickenderfer scored 13 points, Rainey Staub followed with 12 and Olivia Kemp chipped in 10 as Fort Cherry (17-4, 9-1) won in Section 2-2A. Allison Dotson led Sto-Rox (4-17, 0-9) with seven points.

Geibel 49, Jefferson-Morgan 25 – Ava Henderson led with 18 points, Emma Larkin had 15 and Ava Partridge added 14 for Geibel (15-6, 8-2) in a Section 2-A win over Jefferson-Morgan (3-19, 1-9).

Greensburg Central Catholic 69, Winchester Thurston 20 – Erica Gribble scored 23 points, Avery Davis added 15 and Mya Morgan finished with 14 as Greensburg Central Catholic (16-5, 12-0) beat Winchester Thurston (10-11, 6-5) to finish its Section 3-2A schedule undefeated.

Greensburg Salem 59, Freeport 25 – Kait Mankins scored 25 points and Kenzie Span added 11 to lead Greensburg Salem (15-7, 7-5) to a Section 1-4A win. Jaden Gaillot led Freeport (8-13, 4-8) with eight points.

Indiana 49, Plum 34 – Bella Antonacci scored 20 points and Cassie Boyer added 12 as Indiana (16-5, 11-1) got past Plum (13-8, 9-3) to clinch sole possession of the Section 1-5A title. Megan Marston scored 11 for the Mustangs.

Jeannette 35, Leechburg 31 – Venicia Vignoli scored 21 points and Adriana Allison added eight to push Jeannette (8-8, 3-4) to a Section 3-A win. Grace Richards and Ava Richards scored nine points apiece for Leechburg (8-10, 3-5).

Keystone Oaks 56, East Allegheny 17 – Bailey Rieg scored 10 points to lead Keystone Oaks (15-6, 6-4) past East Allegheny (0-21, 0-10) in Section 2-3A.

Latrobe 58, Penn-Trafford 39 – Elle Snyder scored 18 points, Maggie Maiers followed with 17 and Belle Blossey added 10 as Latrobe (11-11, 6-6) clinched a playoff berth in Section 3-5A. Olivia Pepple scored 12 points for Penn-Trafford (13-8, 6-6).

Laurel Highlands 68, Ringgold 12 – Sierra Jenkins scored 21 points and Ayrianna Sumpter added 10 for Laurel Highlands (18-2, 10-2) in a Section 3-4A win over Ringgold (3-18, 0-12).

Mars 59, New Castle 32 – Vita Vargo put up 18 points and Cecilia Christy scored 10 as Mars (11-10, 7-6) defeated New Castle (2-19, 0-12) in Section 2-5A.

McGuffey 72, Charleroi 49 – Taylor Schumacher led all scorers with 26 points, Madison Gaso added 16 and Libby Mallah produced 10 as McGuffey (14-7, 4-6) coasted to a Section 4-3A victory. Bella Carroto scored 13 and Ella Sypolt had 12 for Charleroi (9-12, 1-9).

Monessen 59, Avella 37 – Sidney Campbell scored 16 points, Madison Johnson had 12 and Hailey Johnson added 10 as Monessen (16-4, 10-0) stayed unbeaten in Section 2-A. Ava Frank led Avella (4-18, 2-8) with 22 points.

Moon 46, Montour 43 – Jaedin Griggs scored 19 points and Maria Depner added 11 as Moon (14-8, 4-6) defeated Montour (8-13, 3-7) to claim the fourth and final playoff spot in Section 4-5A. Abigail Cleary scored 11 points for the Spartans (8-13, 3-7).

Mt. Lebanon 52, Chartiers Valley 42 – Payton Collins scored 19 points to lead Mt. Lebanon (11-10, 7-5) to a Section 2-6A win. Emma Reynolds scored 17 points and Lilah Turnbull had 10 for Chartiers Valley (14-6, 7-5).

Mt. Pleasant 43, Apollo-Ridge 32 – Grace Arrigo scored 12 points and Nina Province followed with 10 to lead Mt. Pleasant (14-7, 6-4) past Apollo-Ridge (8-13, 4-6) in Section 3-3A. Sophie Yard paced the Vikings with 16 points.

North Catholic 56, Knoch 29 – Lauren Reitz led all scorers with 17 points and Alana Rocco followed with 16 as North Catholic (14-6, 12-0) finished an undefeated Section 1-4A campaign. Liv Foster and Naturelle Ewing each scored eight points to pace Knoch (12-9, 7-5).

Oakland Catholic 63, McKeesport 47 – Kaylee DeAneglo scored 21 points on seven 3-pointers, Josie Fontana added 11 and Mia LeDonne had 10 as Oakland Catholic (21-0, 12-0) clinched sole possession of the Section 3-5A title. Rachael Manfredo scored 18 and Brooke Evans added 12 for McKeesport (18-3, 10-2).

OLSH 67, South Allegheny 13 – McKinley Walsh scored 16 points, Morgan O’Brien had 12 and Gianna Marino added 11 for OLSH (15-7, 6-4) in a Section 2-3A win over South Allegheny (5-15, 2-8).

Serra Catholic 87, Ellis School 21 – Bri Battles scored 22 points to lead four players in double figures for Serra Catholic (18-4, 10-2) in a Section 3-2A win over Ellis School (8-13, 3-9). Cate Clarke added 17, Ashley German 14 and Caitlyn Cooley 13.

Sewickley Academy 62, Shenango 50 – Libby Eannarino scored 43 points and Emma Eannarino added 10 to lead Sewickley Academy (8-12, 4-8) to a Section 1-2A win. Ella Ferrell scored 20 points and Amara DeFrank had 13 for Shenango (4-18, 2-10).

Shady Side Academy 82, Ligonier Valley 31 – Maggie Spell led all scorers with 28 points and Karis Thomas sank five 3-pointers and finished with 25 points as Shady Side Academy (18-2, 10-0) finished with an undefeated record in Section 3-3A. Marlee Miller made four 3-pointers and had 19 points to lead Ligonier Valley (5-16, 2-8).

South Park 41, Yough 26 – Monroe Polis scored 11 points as South Park (15-6, 9-1) secured a share of the Section 4-3A title, eliminating Yough (9-12, 2-8) from playoff contention. Autumn Matthews scored 18 points for the Cougars.

Thomas Jefferson 63, Connellsville 42 – Laekyn Flinn scored 28 points and Riley McCabe finished with 16 as Thomas Jefferson (9-12, 6-6) clinched a playoff berth in Section 3-5A. Bailey Liska scored 11 points and Whitney Bobish had 10 for Connellsville (4-16, 0-12).

Union 59, Eden Christian 23 – Kelly Cleaver dropped 20 points and Bella Cameron sank three 3-pointers for nine points as Union (16-5, 6-0) rolled past Eden Christian (8-12, 1-4) and finished unbeaten in Section 1-A.

Uniontown 53, Southmoreland 28 – A’Kira Dade scored 22 points and Geelece Ingram added 15 to lead Uniontown (8-13, 4-8) to a Section 3-4A win. Olivia Aumer scored 10 points for Southmoreland (3-18, 2-10).

Waynesburg 47, Brownsville 43 – Kaley Rohanna dropped 19 points and Addison Blair finished with 11 as Waynesburg (19-2, 9-1) defeated Brownsville (12-8, 5-4) to claim a share of the Section 4-3A title. Skyler Gates led all scorers with 29 for the Falcons.

Boys basketball

Avonworth 80, Brentwood 45 – Led by 13 points from Anthony Arlia, 12 from Noah Goetz, 11 from Joel Sommers and 10 Matthew Farrah, Avonworth (19-1) picked up a nonsection win. Forrest Betz scored 18 and Colton Rosing added 15 for Brentwood (9-13).

Cheswick Christian Academy 72, Cornerstone Prep 32 – Brady Rochkind led all scorers with 22 points, Sean Louis and Grant Rochkind scored 18 apiece and Joseph Rosio added 10 as Cheswick Christian (7-1) claimed a second straight regular season title in the Southwestern Christian Athletic Conference. Lorenzo Boidi scored 10 for Cornerstone.

Lincoln Park 89, Ambridge 46 – Meleek Thomas led all scorers with 25 points, Brandin Cummings followed with 22, Rhaki Lum finished with 16 and Mikey Crawford had 12 as Lincoln Park (1-3, 11-0) rolled to a Section 2-4A win. Jared Astorino had 13 points and Nino Ridout added 11 for Ambridge (6-16, 3-9).

Moon 74, Mars 48 – Elijah Guillory led all scorers with 32 points to pace Moon (18-3, 10-0) in a Section 4-5A win. Ryan Ceh scored 20 points and Remi Black netted 10 for Mars (10-12, 4-6).

Neighborhood Academy 69, Summit Academy 26 – Courtney Wallace scored 20 points, Kedron Gilmore added 17 and Syncer Nicholson contributed 10 to lead Neighborhood Academy (16-5, 8-2) to a Section 3-A win. Austin Hindman scored nine on three 3-pointers for Summit Academy (4-12, 2-8).

Hockey

Armstrong 5, Hempfield 1 – Adam Hooks had a hat trick and added an assist and Jason Rullo and Jake Graff each collected a goal and an assist in a Class 2A win for Armstrong (5-11). JJ Williams scored for Hempfield (7-9-1).

Blackhawk 6, Richland 1 – Matias Huber scored a hat trick, Daniel Ostrom netted a pair of goals and Owen Keister also scored to lead Blackhawk (14-2-1) to a Class A win. Connor Bethmann scored for Richland (5-12-1).

Cathedral Prep 4, Baldwin 1 – Rylan Sorge, Nick Pugne, Ethan Cunningham and Logan Taylor scored for Cathedral Prep (7-10-1) in a Class 3A win. Logan Cramer scored for Baldwin (1-14-2).

Central Catholic 6, Canon-McMillan 3 – Griffin Lewis scored twice while Cain Phillip, Evan Benscoter, Nick Jesso and Judah Brophy scored a goal apiece as Central Catholic (9-8) beat Canon-McMillan (1-16) in Class 3A. Brenden Lomago, Braydon Phillips and Elliot Moser scored for the Big Macs.

Deer Lakes 12, Trinity 1 – Zachary Nacey had a seven-point night with three goals and four assists to lead Deer Lakes (9-6-1) to a Varsity D2 win. Giovanni Porco collected three goals and an assist, Ryan Grunden had two goals and four assists, and Eliot Belli finished with a goal and three assists for Deer Lakes. Robert Daddea scored for Trinity (2-15).

Elizabeth Forward 6, Central Valley 3 – Joey Wach produced a hat trick while Josh Hill, Owen Sabatini and Aidan Motil each added a goal for Elizabeth Forward (9-6) in a Varsity D2 win. Aiden Pournaras scored a pair of goals and Gavin Crivelli netted another for Central Valley (8-10).

Freeport 4, Wheeling Catholic 3 (SO) – Bantam Semanko had a goal and an assist, Aiden Bauman and Owen Close also scored, and Jacob Miller dished out a pair of assists to lead Freeport (5-9-5) to a shootout win in Class A. Logan Pielech had a goal and an assist and Aden Cooey and Gary Hatfield also scored for Wheeling Catholic (6-9-2).

Greensburg Salem 5, McDowell 1 – Greensburg Salem (11-5-2) got goals from Hunter Webb, Luke Dieter, Dylan Swierczynski, Mikey Kingerski and Chase Kushner in a Class A win. Ty Tuber scored the lone goal for McDowell (4-11-3).

Indiana 4, Quaker Valley 1 – Landin Wilson had two goals and an assist and Andrew Kobak also scored twice as Indiana (14-2-2) handed Quaker Valley (15-1-1) its first regulation loss in Class A. Luke Rowe made 38 saves. Luke Koehler scored for Quaker Valley.

Seneca Valley 4, Bethel Park 3 – Ethan Riffe’s second goal of the game broke a 3-3 tie in the third period, leading Seneca Valley (15-3) to a Class 3A win. Jacob Komaniak and Andrew Malichky also scored for Seneca Valley. Doug Hartman scored twice and Kylabn Bedner added a goal for Bethel Park (9-6-1).

South Fayette 6, Norwin 3 – Mikhail Lobanov scored twice, including the tie-breaking goal in the third period, to lead South Fayette (14-1-2) to a Class 2A win. Nolan Murphy also scored twice and Robert Chiappetta dished out three assists. Alex Thomas had a goal and two assists and Mason Hohman and Dom Costantino also scored for Norwin (9-7-2).

Thomas Jefferson 13, Bishop McCort 0 – Scott Allan scored a hat trick and had an assist, Connor McCann scored twice and added an assist, and Nick Best handed out four assists as Thomas Jefferson (16-2) blanked Bishop McCort (5-10-1) in Class 2A. Aidan Dougherty stopped eight shots for the shutout for the Jaguars.

Upper St. Clair 5, Mt. Lebanon 2 – Eli Ranklin had two goals and an assist, Ryan Buonomo also scored twice and Luke Fisher also scored for Upper St. Clair (9-5-3) in Class 3A. Graham Resler and Sawyer Klasnick scored for Mt. Lebanon (9-7-1).
