High school roundup for March 19, 2024: 4 Serra Catholic pitchers combine on no-hitter

Owen Dumbroski and three relievers combined on a no-hitter to lead Serra Catholic to a 9-1 victory over California (0-2) in nonsection baseball Tuesday.

Dumbroski went four innings and struck out 10 while Isiah Petty, Tyler Skaggs and Collin Holmes each went and inning. Jake Holmes was 2 for 3 with four RBIs and Zach Black went 3 for 4 for the Eagles (2-0).

Carlynton 12, Freedom 9 – Jacob Hughes went 3 for 4 with five RBIs, Sean Hart doubled and drove in a pair, and Dylan Sunderland picked up the win for Carlynton (2-1) in nonsection play. Tommy Ward was 3 for 5 with a double for Freedom (1-1).

East Allegheny 6, Greensburg Salem 5 – Ryan Kirk hit a walk-off RBI single, driving in Traynor Janosko, to lead East Allegheny (1-0) to a nonsection win. Winning pitcher Joe Connors and Janosko each had two hits for the Wildcats. Grant Smith had a pair of hits for the Golden Lions (1-1).

Ellwood City 6, New Castle 5 – Winning pitcher Aaron Lake fanned six in three innings while Jacob Biskup and Matthew Kelly each drove in a run as Ellwood City (2-0) bested New Castle (0-1) in nonsection play. Dominic Miller doubled and drove in a pair of runs and Keelan Stewart knocked in a pair for the Hurricanes.

Hopewell 13, Shenango 12 – James Gill singled, doubled and drove in two runs and Logan Triscila also had a double and two RBIs for Hopewell (1-0) in a nonsection win. Tyler Houk singled, doubled and drove in two runs for Shenango (0-1).

New Brighton 8, Western Beaver 3 – Brock Budacki homered, doubled and knocked in five runs, Jaxson Zahn drove in a run and Dom Pasquale picked up the win for New Brighton (1-0) in a nonsection game. Christian Stefankis went 2 for 3 for Western Beaver (0-1).

Peters Township 11, Ringgold 6 – TJ Taylor homered and drove in four runs, Will Somers hit a pair of singles and had two RBIs, and Luke Trunzo got the win for Peters Township (2-0) in nonsection play. Alex Kolano doubled in a run, Sam Allen had two hits and two RBIs, and Spencer Behrendt knocked in three runs for Ringgold (0-1).

Pine-Richland 15, Gateway 6 – Peyton Ford went 3 for 5 with a homer and five RBIs to lead Pine-Richland (1-0) in a nonsection win. Anthony Annichine and Logan Plummer each homered and drove in a pair and Benjamin Husted doubled, tripled and drove in a run for the Rams. Grady Dunsmore and Miles Beavin each singled and doubled for Gateway (0-2).

Riverview 8, OLSH 3 – Tyler Aftanas went 4 for 4 and winning pitcher Jack Loughren had three hits and three RBIs to power Riverview (1-0) to a nonsection win. Carter Loughren doubled and drove in a run and Lukas Duncan singled and doubled for the Raiders. Brandon Brazell doubled and Sean Hudac drove in a pair for OLSH (1-2).

South Allegheny 3, St. Stephen and St. Agnes (Va.) 2 – Trenton Popovich went 3 for 3 with a double and Josh Nesky had two hits and an RBI for South Allegheny (1-0). Josh Jackowski picked up the win.

South Fayette 8, Central Valley 0 – Tyler Skeen doubled, drove in a run and got the win for South Fayette (1-0) against nonsection opponent Central Valley (0-1). Anthony Diodata and Bo Stover had a pair of hits each for the Lions.

Thomas Jefferson 9, Keystone Oaks 0 – Luke Kosko went 3 for 3 with two RBIs, Alec Warden and Tyler Lesko each hit a double and drove in a run, and Doominic Metz struck out nine as Thomas Jefferson (4-0) shut out Keystone Oaks (0-1) in nonsection play. Roman Keaney had two hits for the Golden Eagles.

Washington 17, Monessen 2 – William Callan doubled, tripled and drove in two runs and Kyle Bainer also had two hits and two RBIs to lead Washington (2-0) in a nonsection game. RJ DiEugenio singled and drove in a run for Monessen (0-2).

Softball

Chartiers-Houston 8, Seton LaSalle 1 – Meadow Ferri allowed one run on one hit and struck out 15 while hitting three doubles and driving in a run to lead Chartiers-Houston (1-0) to a nonsection win against Seton LaSalle (1-1). Seanna Riggle doubled and knocked in two runs for the Buccaneers. Gianna Ferrieri drove in the only Rebels’ run.

Connellsville 9, Derry 8 – Kirra Davis doubled and Iris Burd struck out 15 and got the win as Connellsville (1-0) rallied for four runs in the bottom of the seventh and walked it off in the eighth for a nonsection win. Haylee Myers struck out 11 in the loss and clubbed a pair of doubles while Katie Dunlap had three hits for Derry (0-1).

Hampton 11, Knoch 6 – Mackenzie Reese went 3 for 4 with three RBIs and Marissa Snyder slashed a double and drove in two as Hampton (1-0) defeated Knoch (0-1) in nonsection play. Lizzie Danik tripled and Alena Tekely doubled, while Grace Hench went 3 for 4 for the Knights.

Latrobe 11, Pine-Richland 3 – Winning pitcher Kayla Williams hit a solo home run and a grand slam and struck out nine, Mya McHugh also homered, and Macie McHugh and Sarah Blossey each went 3 for 4 as Latrobe (1-0) beat Pine-Richland (0-1) in nonsection play. Marissa DeLuca brought home two runs and Mia Maiola hit a triple for the Rams.

McGuffey 12, California 1 – McKenna Crothers hit a pair of doubles and drove in two runs while striking out nine in the circle to lead McGuffey (1-0) to a nonsection win. Faith Ealy was 3 for 4 with three RBIs for the Highlanders. Kayla Saeli had a hit for California (0-1).

North Catholic 15, Leechburg 0 – Ella Eiler homered and drove in two runs, Caroline Craska went 2 for 2 with a triple and four RBIs, and Juliana Lehman doubled and knocked in three as North Catholic (2-0) rolled to a nonsection win. Ava Ferretti and Emily Talario each hit a double for Leechburg (0-1).

South Allegheny 15, East Allegheny 2 – Morgan Mosqueda homered and doubled twice, Carrera Conley smacked a home run, and Lily Dranko clubbed a pair of doubles to boost South Allegheny (1-0) to a nonsection win. Merecedes Benz tripled and Cara Kirk doubled for East Allegheny (0-2).

Boys volleyball

North Catholic 3, Deer Lakes 0 – Drew Palmer had 12 kills and Nate Ball followed with six kills as North Catholic (1-0) swept Deer Lakes (0-1) in straight sets by scores of 25-8, 25-5 and 25-15 in nonsection play.

Girls lacrosse

Moon 11, North Hills 5 – Seanna Rodriguez scored five goals, Allyssa Anstis and Reese Kelsar scored a pair of goals apiece, and Avery Machusko and Marleigh Therrien also scored for Moon (2-0) in a nonsection win. Hailey Coyne had three goals for North Hills (1-1).
