Travis Kovarik and Hunter Brown combined on a one-hit shutout as Penn-Trafford defeated Mt. Pleasant, 9-0, in a nonsection baseball game Wednesday in Myrtle Beach.
Kovarik fanned nine and Brown worked the last two innings. Ian Temple homered and drove in two, Chuck Fontana III doubled and drove in a pair, and Jason Sabol hit a solo homer for the Warriors (1-0). Ryan McKula led off the bottom of the first with a double for the Vikings (0-3).
Bethel Park 11, Canon-McMillan 1 – Ryan Tierney hit a pair of doubles, Ryan Walsh drove in three runs and Ethan Stanhoff knocked in two as Bethel Park (1-1) won a nonsection matchup. Nico Patragas clubbed a solo home run and Cam Russell had two hits for Canon-McMillan (0-1).
Kiski Area 10, Burrell 3 – Blake Fritz smashed a home run and drove in four, Jonathan Walker knocked in two and Nate Witt doubled in a nonsection win for Kiski Area (1-0). Mike McKay finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs and Ryan Bates hit a double for Burrell (0-1). Jake Smith got the win for the Cavaliers.
Jefferson-Morgan 4, Trinity Christian 1 – Brenton Barnhart doubled, Brock Bayles and Drew Adams each collected a pair of hits, and John Woodward got the win for Jefferson-Morgan (1-0) in a nonsection victory. Brock Shuba went 1 for 2 for Trinity Christian.
Mohawk 6, Hopewell 0 – Vinny Pezzuolo doubled, tripled and drove in three runs and was on the mound for Mohawk (1-0) in a nonsection win. Tyler Trisila doubled for Hopewell (1-1).
Riverside 6, Beaver 1 – Hunter Garvin homered and knocked in three runs, Christian Lucarelli doubled, and Zack Hare picked up the win for Riverside (1-0) in a nonsection contest. Maddox Tanner clubbed a solo homer for Beaver (0-1).
Softball
Avella 2, Washington 0 – Winning pitcher Avrey Rado tossed a four-hit complete-game shutout, walking three and striking out seven, while driving in a run to lead Avella (1-1) to a nonsection win over Washington (0-1). Sydney Strope had an RBI and Taylor Shirley doubled for the Eagles.
Burrell 21, Kiski Area 11 – Pyper Ferres hit three doubles and drove in six runs, Braelyn Jones tripled and knocked in three, and Leah Waldsmith also tripled as Burrell (1-0) beat Kiski Area (0-1) in a nonsection offensive explosion. Isabella Delia doubled and had two RBIs and Grace Yeager knocked in three for the Cavaliers.
Carmichaels 4, McGuffey 2 – Ali Jacobs homered and drove in two runs and Carys McConnell doubled and knocked in two for Carmichaels (1-0) in a nonsection win. Bailey Barnyak went seven innings and struck out 16 for the Mighty Mikes. McKenna Crothers fanned 11 in seven while Katie Grimm doubled in a pair of runs for McGuffey (1-1).
Ellwood City 11, Ambridge 1 – Riley Prestopine homered, doubled and knocked in two runs, Ellie Kalantzias collected four RBIs, Sara Schwarz doubled twice and drove in two, and Amber McQuiston pitched Ellwood City (1-0) to a nonsection win. Gianna Georgakis drove in the lone Ambridge (0-1) run.
Freeport 11, Apollo-Ridge 1 – Abby DeJidas went 4 for 4 with a double and a triple, Addyson Caruso homered and drove in two, and Addison Gourley tripled and knocked in a pair as Freeport (1-0) rolled to a nonsection win. Winning pitcher Sydney Selker allowed one unearned run on one hit and struck out eight in five innings. Olivia Saxion doubled for Apollo-Ridge (0-1).
Greensburg Salem 16, Valley 0 – Gionnah Ruffner hit a grand slam and finished with six RBIs, Wynter Scarpa collected two hits and four RBIs, Marley Perrone drove in two, and winning pitcher Alle Scarpa was 2 for 4 with a triple as Greensburg Salem (1-0) steamrolled Valley (0-1) in nonsection play.
Keystone Oaks 25, East Allegheny 1 – Addisyn Schmid homered, doubled and knocked in three runs, Kailyn Brannon doubled, and Kylie Stahl finished with four RBIs for Keystone Oak (1-0) in a nonsection thumping of East Allegheny (0-3).
Norwin 6, Mt. Pleasant 2 – Diem Wardzinski hit a game-tying RBI single and Josey Michalski followed with a two-run go-ahead homer as Norwin scored five times in the seventh inning of a nonsection win. Wardzinski also hit a solo home run and winning pitcher Brookelyn Kotch had three hits, including a triple, for the Knights (1-0). Dani Trainer homered and Addison Reese had two hits for the Vikings (1-1).
North Hills 15, Bethel Park 2 – Savannah Bodnar homered twice and drove in five runs while Makenzie Roskwitalski, Lily Adamski and Abigail Sutton each hit a double as North Hills (2-0) rolled to a nonsection win. Belinda Bova went 3 for 3 with a double for Bethel Park (1-1). Sutton got the win for the Indians.
Quaker Valley 10, Northgate 0 – Winning pitcher Olivia Hoose doubled and homered for three RBIs, Leah Weisse doubled twice, and Donika Keo and Keira Meyers each tripled in a Quaker Valley (1-0) nonsection win. Johna Abramowicz tripled for Northgate (0-2).
West Allegheny 10, Mt. Lebanon 0 – Ava Benish homered and had two RBIs, Cali Fiscus doubled and drove in two, and Aubrey Police added a double for West Allegheny (1-0) in a nonsection victory over Mt. Lebanon (0-2). Autumn Bielecki threw six scoreless, allowing two hits and striking out four for West A.
West Greene 15, Monessen 1 – Winning pitcher Payton Gilbert went 3 for 4 and drove in four runs while Kendra Tharp doubled in a run to lead West Greene (1-2) to a nonsection win. Joey Hurst had an RBI for Monessen (0-1).
Western Beaver 15, New Brighton 0 – Abby Tomkowski homered, doubled and drove in three runs, Maddie Syka smashed a three-run homer, and Izzie Lefebvre and Carleigh Smith each doubled as Western Beaver (1-0) cruised to a three-inning nonsection win over New Brighton (0-1).
Boys volleyball
Hempfield 3, Upper St. Clair 0 – Drew Gordon led Hempfield (1-0) with 11 kills and three aces, Josh Reilly had six kills and Landan Kalp had four aces as the Spartans swept Upper St. Clair (0-2) in straight sets, 25-17, 25-23, 25-18, in nonsection action.
Norwin 3, Baldwin 2 – Jackson Genicola had 29 kills, Troy Horvath dished out 45 assists, and Lucas Churchfield recorded 19 digs to lead Norwin to a nonsetion win over Baldwin, 23-25, 25-20, 29-27, 29-31, 16-14.
Girls lacrosse
Hampton 12, Latrobe 1 – Dillon Perry scored four goals while Lindsay Fiscus and Sienna Rex each scored two goals to lead Hampton (1-1, 1-0) to a Section 1-2A win. Ryanne Lehman scored for Latrobe (0-2, 0-1).
Pine-Richland 17, Quaker Valley 7 – Madeline Mill scored six goals and had an assist, Cate Gentile netted four goals and had three helpers, and Mallory Boivin added five goals as Pine-Richland (2-0) rolled to a nonsection victory over Quaker Valley (0-1). Alexa Westwood scored four goals and Lucy Roig recorded a hat trick for the Quakers.
