High school roundup for April 4, 2024: Moon knocks off No. 1 Shaler

Coleman Fletcher hit the go-ahead RBI single in the top of the eighth inning and earned the win in relief to lead Moon to a 6-5 victory over No. 1 Shaler in Section 3-5A baseball Thursday.
Angelo Fachet singled, stole second and scored the winning run and Andrew Cross tripled during a three-run fifth for the Tigers (3-1, 1-1). Landon Schiffhauer went 3 for 4 with a double and Chase Beran doubled and tripled for the Titans (4-1, 0-1).
Canon-McMillan 5, Mt. Lebanon 2 – Will Taczak hit the go-ahead RBI single in the top of the ninth to lift Canon-McMillan (1-3, 1-1) to a Section 2-6A win. Dominic Patragas had two hits and wo RBIs for the Big Macs. Sawyer Klasnick went 3 for 4 with an RBI for Mt. Lebanon (4-2, 1-1).
Deer Lakes 6, Freeport 3 – Ryan Cochran hit the go-ahead RBI double in the top of the seventh to lead Deer Lakes (3-3, 1-3) to a Section 3-3A win. Cochran was the winning pitcher, striking out seven in seven innings, and went 3 for 3 with a homer and three RBIs. Anthony Smith doubled and drove in a run and Lucas Derose had two hits and two RBIs for the Lancers. Luke Whitfield had two hits and Matt Corfield had two RBIs for Freeport (1-4, 1-3).
Keystone Oaks 16, Steel Valley 7 – Jake LaPorte doubled and drove in three runs and Shane Falcone and Bryce Altabaugh each had two hits and an RBI for Keystone Oaks (2-3, 2-0) in a Section 2-3A victory. Cooper Phares tripled and drove in three runs for Steel Valley (1-4, 0-2).
Knoch 8, Highlands 4 – Kyle Morgan went 3 for 4 with two RBIs, including the go-ahead run-scoring single during a four-run ninth, as Knoch (2-2, 1-0) earned a Section 4-4A win. Jacob Stallsmith also had three hits and Aidan Jones and Brady Wozniak each singled and doubled for the Knights. Carson Goldberg doubled and drove in two runs for Highlands (1-5, 0-1).
Riverview 7, Apollo-Ridge 3 – Eli DeVita went 3 for 3 with a triple, a homer and three RBIs to power Riverview (5-0, 3-0) to a Section 3-2A win. Winning pitcher Jack Loughren struck out 10, singled and doubled and Johnny Bertucci had a single and double for the Raiders. Spencer Sells homered and drove in a pair for Apollo-Ridge (0-3, 0-2).
Seneca Valley 13, Allderdice 1 – Mike Delduca singled, doubled and drove in five runs to lead Seneca Valley to a Section 1-6A win in five innings. Nick Parrotto had two hits and two RBIs for the Raiders (4-1-1, 2-0). Donovan Snelsire went 2 for 2 for the Dragons (1-3, 0-2).
Shady Side Academy 8, Burrell 4 – David Dillon, Charlie Wanless and Zachary Barber each had two hits and an RBI to lead Shady Side Academy (3-0, 3-0) to a Section 3-3A win. Josh Valinsky singled and doubled and Caden Green had two RBIs for the Bulldogs. Ryan Bates singled and doubled and Justin Hyland drove in two runs for Burrell (1-3, 1-2).
Winchester Thurston 8, Northgate 7 – Winning pitcher Mason Witten doubled and drove in a run to help Winchester Thurston to a nonsection win. Sam McComb doubled and had two RBIs and Sam Tarr also plated a pair for the Bears. Nick Rawlings singled and doubled and Chris Crawford tripled and drove in three for Northgate (0-3).
Softball
Fox Chapel 8, Peters Township 7 – Mia Dunleavy singled, doubled and drove in two runs and Adina Rosen had three RBIs to lead Fox Chapel (1-2) in a nonsection slugfest. Emersen Gatten and Skylar Lemansky each singled and doubled for Peters Township (3-3).
Girls lacrosse
Fox Chapel 13, North Allegheny 8 – Sydney Schutzman scored five goals, Meg Delaney added four and Caroline Grimsley had three to lead Fox Chapel (4-0) to a Section 2-3A win.
Franklin Regional 16, Greensburg Central Catholic 0 – Ingrid Varley, Catherine Helm and Emerson Funari had hat trick and Katelyn Patts recorded the shutout as Franklin Regional picked up a Section 1-2A win.
North Hills 9, Butler 4 – Abigail Krogmann scored twice, including her 200th career goal, and Hailey Coyne had a hat trick to lead North Hills to a Section 2-3A win.
Boys volleyball
Canon-McMillan 3, Peters Township 1 – Luke Bockius had 18 kills and 12 digs and Justin Peters contributed eight kills, 15 assists and three blocks to lead Canon-McMillan (5-0, 2-0) to a Section 1-3A win. Games scores were 25-20, 15-25, 25-22, 25-20. Ben Kopec added seven kills, William O’Bryan dished out 19 assists and Nolan Rosing had nine digs.
Hempfield 3, Penn Hills 0 – Aaron Woodley had a team-high 12 kills, Josh Reilly followed with eight kills and Gunner Wheaton had seven as Hempfield picked up a Section 3-3A win. Game scores were 25-17, 25-19, 25-21.
Norwin 3, Plum 1 – Jackson Genicola had 17 kills, Lucas Churchfield recorded 16 digs and Troy Horvath handed out 40 assists to lead Norwin to a Section 3-3A win. Game scores were 25-18, 25-14, 20-25, 25-19.
Penn-Trafford 3, Central Catholic 1 – Bradley Heinbaugh led the team with 21 kills and Keith Otto followed with 14 to lead Penn-Trafford (4-1, 2-0) to a Section 3-3A win. Gamer scored were 17-25, 25-15, 25-13, 25-13. Connor Evangeliste added eight kills, Drew Sherwin had 15 digs and Nathaniel Rugh handed out 40 assists.
