High school roundup for April 24, 2024: Plum knocks off Shaler

Riley Stephans struck out nine and allowed one unearned run in seven innings to lead Plum to a 4-1 win over Shaler in Section 1-5A softball Wednesday.

Liana Yusko crushed a solo homer in the first and finished with two RBIs and Danielle Pici went 2 for 4 with an RBI for the Mustangs (8-4, 5-3). Olivia Sachs tripled and scored for the Titans (9-2, 6-2) .

Armstrong 18, Gateway 1 – Jessica Pugh homered twice for and drove in five runs and Shelby Cloak went 3 for 3 with a homer and seven RBIs for Armstrong (11-1, 7-1) in a Section 2-5A win over Gateway (0-11, 0-8).

Apollo-Ridge 21, Ellis School 0 – Camdyn Kowalczyk went 3 for 3 with a triple and six RBIs, propelling Apollo-Ridge (6-4, 6-2) to a Section 2-2A win over Ellis School (0-7, 0-7). Malea Veneziani, MaKenna Syster, Jaden Mull and Cassidy Ryan contributed two hits each for the Vikings. Veneziani had four RBIs and Syster drove in three.

Avonworth 10, Deer Lakes 0 – Abigail Brooks hit a solo home run, Rylee Gray went 2 for 2 with a homer and two RBIs, Mara Stetser knocked in a pair, and Sydney Savatt tripled and drove in a run as Avonworth (7-3, 5-1) blanked Deer Lakes (8-5, 5-3) in Section 1-3A. Winning pitcher Alivia Lantzy struck out 11 for the Antelopes.

Bentworth 4, Charleroi 0 – Sydney Gonglik pitched a one-hitter with 15 strikeouts to lead Bentworth (10-2, 8-0) past Charleroi (9-3, 6-3) in Section 3-2A. Zoie McDonald singled, doubled and drove in a pair for the Bearcats.

Bethel Park 13, Peters Township 10 – Winning pitcher Mackenzie Wade batted twice in the eighth inning, hitting a three-run home run and a two-run single as Bethel Park (7-6, 5-3) scored nine runs in the inning to outslug Peters Township (4-9, 1-6) in Section 4-5A. Julia Miller and Sia Spano each doubled and drove in two runs for the Black Hawks. Skylar Lemansky doubled and drove in two for the Indians.

Blackhawk 10, Beaver 2 – Mia Yenges went 2 for 3 with a pair of RBIs while Zoey Linder and Raina Johnsno each doubled and drove in a run for Blackhawk (5-4, 4-4) in a Section 3-4A win. Kenzie Springer knocked in a run for Beaver (2-10, 1-7). Kylie Prisuta struck out 10 for the Cougars.

Burgettstown 5, Beth-Center 2 – Emma McGregor had a pair of hits and RBIs and Andi Midler singled twice, doubled and had an RBI to pace Burgettstown (5-7, 4-4) in a Section 3-2A win. Kiera Lamp and Kendall Welsh had three hits each for Beth-Center (3-4, 3-4). Lamp doubled twice and Welsh had an RBI.

Butler 5, Mt. Lebanon 0 – Madison Wolfe doubled and drove in three, Lily Vicari also doubled and Kelsey Ogin struck out 10 as Butler (3-8, 2-8) shut out Mt. Lebanon (1-12, 1-10) in Section 1-6A.

Carlynton 21, Cornell 3 – Winning pitcher Danica DeCecco struck out seven and gave up two hits while hitting a double and driving in three runs as Carlynton (5-7, 4-6) rolled to a Section 1-A win over Cornell (2-7, 2-6). Kyla Morris collected five hits and three RBIs while Sarah Loney and Carlee Hughes each doubled and knocked in a pair of runs for the Cougars.

Carmichaels 18, California 2 – Carys McConnell homered and drove in five runs and Ali Jacobs tripled, doubled and knocked in a run as Carmichaels (8-2, 5-1) bested California (1-10, 1-8) in Section 2-A. Winning pitcher Bailey Barnyak struck out 10 and went 2 for 3 with a triple and three RBIs for the Mighty Mikes. Kera Urick doubled and drove in two for the Trojans.

Central Valley 18, Hopewell 8 – Sonya Householder and London Banks homered, Abigaile Stewart went 4 for 4 with two doubles and Isabella Skrlac singled twice and drove in five runs to lead an offensive onslaught for Central Valley (7-2, 5-2) in a Section 2-3A win. Ava Compton and Kara Barkovich homered for Hopewell (5-9, 2-6).

Chartiers-Houston 24, Avella 0 – Meadow Ferri tripled and drove in four runs, Sydney English had four RBIs and Seanna Riggle and Zaylee Fonner each collected two hits and two RBIs as Chartiers Houston (8-1, 6-0) beat Avella (3-10, 0-9) in Section 2-A. Ferri and Taryne Drilak combined on a no-hitter for the Bucs.

Elizabeth Forward 11, Belle Vernon 1 – Shelby Telegdy allowed one run and struck out 10 in a complete game as Elizabeth Forward (10-1, 8-0) beat Belle Vernon (11-4, 6-4) in Section 2-4A. Julia Resnik hit a pair of solo home runs and Hannah Evans belted a two-run homer for the Warriors. Katie Sokol went 2 for 3 with a solo homer for the Leopards.

Ellwood City 19, Beaver Falls 0 – Winning pitcher Amber McQuiston struck out nine and gave up one hit in a five-inning complete game shutout to lead Ellwood City (10-2, 6-2) to a Section 2-3A win. McQuiston also went 2 for 4 with a triple and four RBIs and Julia Nardone doubled twice for the Wolverines. Tysha Brickner singled for Beaver Falls (2-8, 1-7).

Fox Chapel 20, Oakland Catholic 5 – Ava Walmsley singled, doubled and drove in four runs, Mia Dunleavy had three hits and five RBIs, and Adina Rosen singled twice and tripled to lead Fox Chapel (5-6, 4-4) past Oakland Catholic (1-8, 0-7) in Section 1-5A.

Frazier 16, Bishop Canevin 0 – Claire Domonkos drove in four runs, Jayanna Ciferno and Grace Vaughn each tripled and drove in two and Addison Hiles got the win as Frazier (7-0, 7-0) shut out Bishop Canevin (2-7, 2-5) in Section 3-A.

Greensburg Central Catholic 7, Brentwood 6 – Grace Kindel went 4 for 4 with a pair of doubles while Julianna Saxion and Macee Magill each doubled as Greensburg Central Catholic (5-3, 5-3) won a narrow Section 2-2A contest. Paige Boehm homered for Brentwood (3-7, 2-6).

Greensburg Salem 6, Albert Gallatin 1 – Winning pitcher Alle Scarpa struck out 13 and was 3 for 4 with a double to lead Greensburg Salem (4-9, 2-6) to a Section 2-4A win against Albert Gallatin (1-9, 1-8). Gionnah Ruffner went 2 for 4 with an RBI for the Golden Lions.

Hampton 15, North Catholic 3 – Jessica Lange went 2 for 2 with a home run and three RBIs, Katelyn Dubee also hit a home run, and Mackenzie Reese went 4 for 4 with three doubles as Hampton (10-1, 9-0) rolled to a Section 3-4A win. Clare Kotwica homered for North Catholic (5-4, 2-4). Marissa Snyder got the win for the Talbots.

Hempfield 6, Canon-McMillan 1 – Allie Cervola and Maggie Howard each doubled and drove in a run and Riley Miller struck out six in five innings as Hempfield (10-1, 8-1) beat Canon-McMillan (4-6, 4-6) in Section 1-6A. Kiersten Williams went 2 for 3 with a solo home run for the Big Macs.

Indiana 13, McKeesport 0 – Olivia Zimmerman struck out 11 in a five-inning no-hitter and went 4 for 4 with a double and three RBIs as Indiana (9-3, 7-0) blanked McKeesport (6-7, 2-6) in Section 1-4A. Maggie Cunningham went 2 for 3 with a home run and drove in three for the Little Indians.

Jeannette 11, St. Joseph 1 – Grace Stein stuck out 13 in a five inning one-hitter and hit a two-run double to lead Jeannette (7-0, 6-0) to a Section 3-A win. Jaidyn Born drove in three with a double for the Jayhawks. Anna Kreinbrook singled in a run for St. Joseph (1-6, 1-6).

Keystone Oaks 8, Seton LaSalle 6 – Winning pitcher Kennedi Smith smacked the go-ahead RBI single in the top of the ninth to lift Keystone Oaks (4-7, 1-6) to a Section 4-3A win. Addysin Schmid belted a solo homer for the Golden Eagles. Delaney Baker crushed a two-run home run for Seton LaSalle (3-6, 2-4).

Knoch 11, Highlands 1 – Marlee Fraser doubled and drove in three runs, Grace Hensch went 3 for 4 with a pair of RBIs, and Kaila Purcell stuck out five in five innings as Knoch (10-3, 7-1) cruised to a Section 1-4A win. Carrah Scardina went 2 for 3 with an RBI for Highlands (1-8, 1-5).

Laurel 22, Freedom 0 – Addie Deal homered, doubled, had five RBIs and yielded only one hit in three innings pitched as Laurel (8-4, 6-2) cruised to a Section 1-2A win over Freedom (3-7, 3-6). Ivy Pancher homered, singled and had two RBIs and Mayci Lang had a trio of hits and RBIs for the Spartans.

Laurel Highlands 10, Uniontown 0 – Isabelle Coleman yielded four hits and struck out six in a complete-game shutout as Laurel Highlands (4-6, 4-5) beat Uniontown (7-2, 7-1) in Section 2-4A. Harlie Dirda drove in three runs for the Mustangs. Graci Rodeheaver went 2 for 3 for the Red Raiders.

Ligonier Valley 4, South Allegheny 2 – Marlee Miller and Bella Dolton each drove in two runs as Ligonier Valley (9-1, 6-1) rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh to beat South Allegheny (5-7, 3-5) in Section 3-3A. Ava Brown doubled for the Gladiators. Cheyenne Piper struck out 11 for the Rams.

Mohawk 11, Quaker Valley 0 – Gigi Cowher allowed one hit and struck out seven in a five-inning shutout while Alivia Hare went 2 for 2 with a home run and three RBIs as Mohawk (11-1, 7-0) bested Quaker Valley (4-7, 2-6) in Section 2-3A. Olivia Hoose doubled for the Quakers.

Mt. Pleasant 13, Derry 1 – Winning pitcher Dani Trainer struck out 10 and went 4 for 4 with a double, a home run and three RBIs to lead Mt. Pleasant (7-6, 3-4) to a Section 3-3A win. Madyson Hart and Emma Leechalk each knocked in a pair of runs for the Vikings. Haylee Myers singled in a run for Derry (2-10, 0-7).

Neshannock 18, Aliquippa 0 – Abigail Measel tossed a three-inning no-hitter and finished with nine strikeouts as Neshannock (11-0, 9-0) cruised to a Section 1-2A win over Aliquippa (1-8, 0-8). Gabby Quinn and Jaidon Nogay each doubled twice and drove in three runs for the Lancers.

New Castle 11, Mars 7 – Gabby Mangieri and Jenalyn Nero contributed a pair of hits and RBIs to help New Castle (3-7, 2-6) secure a Section 3-5A win. Olivia Hood doubled twice and was the winning pitcher for the Red Hurricane. Steph Esswein and Taylor Simoni had three hits apiece for Mars (4-9, 3-4) and Taylor Schmitt homered and had three RBIs.

North Allegheny 6, Baldwin 5 – Julia Drazga hit a two-run homer in the top of the seventh to lift North Allegheny (8-3, 8-3) to a Section 1-6A win. Winning pitcher Sammy Plotsko went 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs for the Tigers. Jordan Gerendash hit a two-run home run and Reese Temme mashed a solo homer for Baldwin (4-9, 3-8).

Northgate 15, Rochester 11 – Winning pitcher Johna Abramowicz went 3 for 5 with a double and three RBIs and Cassandra Tadda had two hits and drove in a pair as Northgate (5-6, 5-4) defeated Rochester (3-8, 2-7) in Section 1-A. Hannah Pittman went 2 for 3 with a double and knocked in two for the Rams.

Penn-Trafford 10, Kiski Area 2 – Jaydn Pellis pitched a complete game with 11 strikeouts in a Section 2-5A win for Penn-Trafford (8-4, 6-2) over Kiski Area (2-10, 2-6). Mackenzie Cox hit a solo homer for the Warriors and Lorryn Sepe had an RBI double.

Seneca Valley 2, Norwin 0 – Bella Gross tripled and drove in two runs while Abby Kalkowski struck out seven in five innings to lift Seneca Valley (13-0, 10-0) past Norwin (7-7, 6-6) in Section 1-6A. Bailey Snowberger and Rachel Minteer each tripled for the Knights. Lexie Hames fanned three in two innings for the Raiders.

Serra Catholic 17, Steel Valley 5 – Serra Catholic scored 11 runs in the top of the fifth to pull away for a Section 2-2A victory. Alanna Morton and Ava Wisniewski homered for the Eagles (8-1, 7-0). Morton had four RBIs and Wisniewski drove in three. Kylie Salopek doubled and had three RBIs for Steel Valley (4-8, 3-5).

South Fayette 6, Moon 5 – Makenna Galish hit a game-tying RBI single and scored the winning run on an error in the top of the seventh as South Fayette (8-2, 6-2) prevailed over Moon (2-9, 2-5) in Section 3-5A. Maddie Cavanaugh hit a solo home run and Emma Earley picked up the win for the Lions. Sydney Ray doubled and knocked in a pair for the Tigers.

South Park 2, Waynesburg 0 – Sydney Sekely struck out 19 and allowed two hits in a complete-game shutout as South Park (11-1, 7-0) scored two unearned runs in the top of the eighth to beat Waynesburg (6-8, 4-4) in Section 4-3A. Jacie Hilligsburg had a hit for the Eagles. Gina Tedrow fanned 16 and gave up one hit for the Raiders.

South Side 19, Sewickley Academy 2 – Kenidi Cook went 3 for 3 with a pair of doubles, a home run and five RBIs while striking out four and allowing two unearned runs in four innings as South Side (7-3, 6-1) beat Sewickley Academy (1-7, 1-7) in Section 1-A. Giavanna Chiccarello hit three doubles and had three RBIs and Grace Glenn doubled, singled and knocked in three for the Rams.

Thomas Jefferson 11, Connellsville 0 – Emma DeSimone belted a grand slam in the second inning to help Thomas Jefferson (7-5, 5-3) beat Connellsville (9-5, 5-3) in Section 4-5A. Zoe Krizan and Morgan Alisesky also homered for the Jaguars.

Upper St. Clair 9, Trinity 6 – Winning pitcher Brooklyn Kemp went 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs and Caroline Bernard was 3 for 3 and drove in a pair to lead Upper St. Clair (4-8, 2-5) in Section 4-5A. Finley Hohn had two doubles and two RBIs for Trinity (9-4, 5-3).

Valley 3, Shady Side Academy 0 – Ryleigh Kasten crushed an RBI double and Jessica Staraniec went 1 for 3 with a double as Valley (1-11, 1-6) shut out Shady Side (1-6, 1-6) in Section 1-3A. Rylee Sykes went five for the win and Kylee Schieb picked up the save.

West Greene 6, Jefferson-Morgan 4 – Winning pitcher Payton Gilbert had two hits and an RBI and Kendra Tharp drove in a run as West Greene (7-4, 6-2) edged out Jefferson-Morgan (4-5, 4-3) in Section 2-A. Kayla Larkin doubled and knocked in two runs for the Rockets.

West Mifflin 17, Woodland Hills 0 – Abby Jakubovic went 2 for 2 with a double, a home run and four RBIs and winning pitcher Rylie Dobnak struck out seven and gave up one hit in a three-inning shutout while driving in three runs to help her cause as West Mifflin (7-6, 4-4) defeated Woodland Hills (0-7, 0-6) in Section 1-4A. Victoria Starr doubled for the Wolverines.

Western Beaver 6, West Allegheny 2 – Abby Tomkowski and Shaylyn Shall each hit a home run to help Western Beaver (4-5, 3-5) earn a Section 3-5A victory. Shall had three hits. Ava Henke homered and drove in a pair for West Allegheny (14-2, 7-1).

Baseball

Brentwood 10, Brashear 9 – Michael O’Leary went 5 for 5, had a double in the eighth inning and scored the winning run on an error for Brentwood (4-6) in a nonsection win. O’Leary added a triple and finished with four RBIs. Zach Wuenschell tripled and Aiden Gordon and Blaize Diaz doubled for the Spartans. Dominic Sarokan had four hits, including a pair of doubles and a triple, and drove in three runs for Brashear. Ryan Lane had three hits.

Belle Vernon 13, Thomas Jefferson 5 – Lucas Judy and Adam LaCarte each drove in three runs and Carson Matusik went 3 for 5 with a double as Belle Vernon (11-2) won a nonsection matchup. Brady Hodge tripled and Noah Kaszer went 3 for 5 for Thomas Jefferson (13-2).

Ellwood City 10, Laurel 8 – Jordan Keller doubled twice and had four RBIs to lead Ellwood City (5-6) past Laurel (6-6) in nonsection play. Aaron Lake singled three times and plated three runs for the Wolverines. Kolton Carlson had a pair of hits and RBIs for the Spartans.

Mohawk 15, Beaver Falls 1 – Cash Startton went 2 for 2 with a double and three RBIs while Connor Hart and Drew Wrona each collected two hits and two RBIs as Mohawk (11-1, 8-0) rolled to a Section 1-3A win over Beaver Falls (0-10, 0-10). Tyler Howarth got the win for the Spartans.

Valley 6, Greensburg Salem 4 – Conrad Hoover had a double and a pair of RBIs to help Valley (9-4) top Greensburg Salem (5-6) in a nonsection game. Nikolas Heakins doubled twice and struck out four in three innings pitched to get the win. Dante Taliani also had a pair of doubles for the Vikings. Tyler Martin doubled and drove in two for the Golden Lions.

Boys volleyball

North Catholic 3, OLSH 0 – Drew Palmer had 12 kills, Lucas Gunther added 10 kills and Nate Ball had seven kills and four blocks as North Catholic (10-1, 8-1) swept OLSH (5-6, 3-5) in Section 1-2A. Liam Cooke had 32 assists for the Trojans.

Girls lacrosse

Fox Chapel 9, Shady Side Academy 8 – Sydney Schutzman recorded a hat trick and surpassed 200 goals for her career in a Section 2-3A win for Fox Chapel. Meg Delaney contributed two goals for the Foxes.

Hampton 11, Ellis School 2 – Lindsay Fiscus scored six goals and Sienna Rex added a hat trick as Hampton (5-7, 5-4) defeated Ellis School (2-6, 2-6) in Section 1-2A. Lillian Ketler added a goal for the Talbots.
