High school roundup for April 25, 2024: North Allegheny takes series with walk-off win over Seneca Valley

Owen Schall hit a sacrifice fly and JD Costanzo hit an RBI single as North Allegheny scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat Seneca Valley, 4-3, on Thursday to take two of three in a Section 1-6A baseball series.

Nicolas Varlotta recorded the final out of the top of the seventh to earn the win for the Tigers (11-3, 8-1). Mike Delduca and Ryan Piekutoski each doubled for the Raiders (7-6-1, 4-5).

Armstrong 10, Burrell 0 – Logan Badac went 3 for 3 with a home run, Kaiden Scheeren had two doubles and two RBIs, and Jacob Bowser allowed two hits in four innings to lead Armstrong (6-7) to a nonsection win. Dylan McKallip and Trey Coury had hits for Burrell (7-6).

Bishop Canevin 15, Monessen 0 – Jackson Maddix doubled twice and drove in three runs, Tyler Maddix doubled, tripled and knocked in two, and winning pitcher Kole Olszewski struck out eight to lead Bishop Canevin (10-3, 8-2) to a Section 3-A win. Eli Covington had a hit for Monessen (0-12, 0-8).

Burgettstown 19, Chartiers-Houston 10 – Trailing 9-6, Burgettstown (5-3-1, 5-1) scored 12 runs in the top of the seventh in a Section 1-2A win. Brodie Kuzior had a double, home run and three RBIs and Jacob McNabb, Riley Kennedy and Sam Elich doubled and drove in three runs apiece for the Blue Devils. Keegan Kosek had two doubles and five RBIs for Chartiers-Houston (6-6, 6-2).

Butler 5, Allderdice 0 – Nolan Stefaniak struck out eight and allowed two hits in 6⅔ innings and Carson Bish drove in two runs for Butler (6-8, 4-5) in a Section 1-6A win over Allderdice (1-13, 0-12).

California 14, Bentworth 7 – Logan Hartley had two singles, a double and two RBIs and Parker Gillen drove in five runs to lead California (3-9) to a nonsection win. Sam Wade had two singles and three RBIs for Bentworth (2-9).

Canon-McMillan 11, Baldwin 1 – Ben Peterson and Teddy Burke each doubled and drove in two runs for Canon-McMillan (7-7, 7-5) in a Section 2-6A win over Baldwin (1-14, 0-11).

Carlynton 6, McKeesport 2 – Dylan Sunderland hit two singles and Jacob Hughes drove in two runs for Carlynton (11-5) in a nonsection win. Tyler Reigh had two singles and an RBI for McKeesport (2-11).

Derry 8, Greensburg Salem 6 – John Wasnick went 3 for 3 with four RBIs and Mason Fridley had two hits and an RBI to lead Derry (4-5) to a nonsection win. Grant Smith and Tyler Martin each had three hits for Greensburg Salem (5-7).

Fox Chapel 4, Shady Side Academy 1 – Jeremy Haigh doubled twice and drove in a run and Ryan Inglis gave up one unearned run in five innings to lead Fox Chapel (10-3) to a nonsection win. Mitchell Epstein doubled and drove in a run for the Foxes. Jonah Sackrowitz had an RBI for Shady Side Academy (7-4).

Freedom 8, New Brighton 0 – Tommy Ward and Chase Grable drove in two runs apiece to pace Freedom (8-5, 6-3) in a Section 2-2A victory. Ward singled twice and Grable doubled. Brock Budacki doubled for New Brighton (5-6, 3-6).

Greensburg Central Catholic 10, Jeannette 4 – Tyler Samide singled, doubled and drove in three runs and Brody Bothell had two hits and two RBIs to lead Greensburg Central Catholic (7-2, 6-1) to a Section 3-2A win. Anthony Grippo doubled and knocked in a pair for the Centurions. Wyatt Schaeffer drove in two runs for Jeannette (6-5, 4-4).

Hampton 5, Deer Lakes 5 – Dylan Eichas hit an RBI single and Norby Hock followed with a sacrifice fly as Hampton (6-5) scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to grab a nonsection win. Brady Smith went 3 for 3 with a double for the Talbots. Ryan Cochran went 3 for 3 with a double, triple and homer for Deer Lakes (5-7).

Hopewell 8, Ellwood City 7 – John Vescio hit a home run and Benjamin McDonald had a single, double and two RBIs to lead Hopewell (7-7) to a nonsection win. Aaron Lake doubled and drove in two runs for Ellwood City (5-7).

Kiski Area 7, Franklin Regional 2 – Dimitri Spagnola doubled and drove in a pair of runs to lead Kiski Area (9-5) to a nonsection win. Carter Leviski doubled and drove in a run and Nate Witt also doubled for the Cavaliers. Luke Williams homered for Franklin Regional (9-5).

Laurel Highlands 13, McGuffey 2 – Nicholas Crouch went 4 for 4 with a double and three RBIs, Shane Layton hit three singles, and Devan Krivosky tripled for Laurel Highlands (1-11) in a nonsection win over McGuffey (5-5).

Mohawk 10, Beaver 1 – Vinny Pezzuolo had a double, home run and three RBIs and Jay Wrona doubled and drove in two runs for Mohawk (12-1) in a nonsection win. Derek Hughes hit two singles for Beaver (6-10).

Moon 7, Montour 6 – Jarrod Golden hit a walk-off RBI single for Moon (6-7) in a nonsection win. Matteo Weber had two singles and two RBIs for Montour (12-2). Jarrod Golden had a single, double and an RBI for the Tigers.

Pine-Richland 6, Mars 3 – Ryan Grebinoski and Peyton Ford had two singles and an RBI apiece to lead Pine-Richland (14-2) to a nonsection win. Jake Johnson hit two singles for Mars (6-5).

Quaker Valley 11, Sewickley Academy 7 – Oscar Roig had a double, triple and three RBIs and Gavin Fallgren hit two doubles for Quaker Valley (4-9) in a nonsection win. Jordan Smith hit a home run for Sewickley Academy (2-9).

Riverview 12, Highlands 6 – Eli DeVita, Lukas Duncan and Rece Stempfer each had three hits and two RBIs to power Riverview (9-3) to a nonsection win. Kristian Kocon drove in a pair of runs for Highlands (2-11).

Rochester 19, Summit Academy 0; Rochester 23, Summit Academy 0 – Rochester (5-7, 4-4) swept a Section 2-A doubleheader with Summit Academy (0-8, 0-8). In the first game, Justin Schurr threw a three-inning no-hitter with seven strikeouts. In the second game, Devin Woodley pitched a three-inning no-hitter with six Ks.

Seton LaSalle 15, Aliquippa 0 – Connor Rothhaar went 2 for 2 with a homer and four RBIs and Gio LoNero was 2 for 2 with a double and home run to lead Seton LaSalle (11-1, 10-0) past Aliquippa (0-7, 0-7) in Section 2-2A. Brayden Carter threw a three-inning, one-hit shutout, and Roman LoNero went 3 for 3 with two RBIs.

Shaler 13, Indiana 7 – Brady Alexander went 4 for 4 with two doubles, a triple and four RBIs and Luke Jarzynka and Logan Bauer had two RBIs apiece to lead Shaler (11-3) to a nonsection win. Ben Ryan hit a grand slam for Indiana (7-5).

Union 10, Western Beaver 3 – Dom Cucitrone hit a single and two doubles and Dayne Johnke and Rocco Galmarini drove in two runs apiece to lead Union (8-0, 7-0) to a Section 2-A win. Ethan Wilson hit two singles for Western Beaver (6-3, 6-1).

Upper St. Clair 4, Morgantown (WV) 2 – Nico D’Orazio went 3 for 4 with a double and triple to lead Upper St. Clair (6-9) to a nonsection win over Morgantown (WV).

Valley 5, Serra Catholic 4 – Conrad Hoover singled and scored the go-ahead run on a Dante Taliani sacrifice fly in the sixth inning as Valley defeated Serra Catholic in a nonsection game, handing the Eagles their first loss of the year. Nikolas Heakins singled and tripled and Taliani doubled and had two RBIs for the Vikings (10-4). Isaiah Petty went 3 for 3 with two doubles for Serra Catholic (11-1).

Waynesburg 3, West Greene 2 – Austin Surber struck out 12 in six innings and Alex Vansickle struck out three in one inning and hit two singles to lead Waynesburg (10-0) to a nonsection win. Johnny Lampe and Dylan Hughes singled and drove in a run apiece for West Greene (8-4).

Yough 3, Belle Vernon 2 – Sam Smalich drove in two runs and Aidan Shaffer hit two singles to lead Yough (5-8) to a nonsection win. Jake Gedekoh doubled and Alex Nash had two RBIs for Belle Vernon (11-3).

Softball

Baldwin 11, Mt. Lebanon 1 – Jordan Gerendash hit a home run and Avery Herrington had three doubles and three RBIs to lead Baldwin (5-9, 4-8) to a Section 1-6A win. Sarah Stroh and Emily Morgan had two singles apiece for Mt. Lebanon (1-13, 1-11).

Beth-Center 14, Avella 5 – Keira Lamp went 3 for 3 with a double and triple and Kendall Welsh hit a home run for Beth-Center (4-4) in a nonsection win. Haleigh Rush hit a triple for Avella (3-11).

Carlynton 11, Sewickley Academy 4 – Lucy Vetter hit two two-run doubles and winning pitcher Kyla Morris struck out 15 to lead Carlynton (6-7, 5-6) past Sewickley Academy (1-8, 1-8) in Section 1-A.

Chartiers-Houston 14, West Greene 4 – Ella Richey hit two home runs and Lauren Rush and Zaylee Fonner also homered to lead Chartiers-Houston (9-1, 7-0) to a Section 2-A win. Kendra Tharp doubled and drove in a run for West Greene (7-5, 6-3).

Chartiers Valley 8, Blackhawk 3 – Taylor Walsh had a single, double and two RBIs and Lily Duffill drove in two runs to lead Chartiers Valley (8-2, 6-1) to a Section 3-4A win. Kylie Prisuta hit a double for Blackhawk (5-5, 4-5).

Deer Lakes 13, Valley 2 – Maddie Kee hit a home run and Avery Rethage hit a two-run triple for Deer Lakes (9-5, 6-3) in a Section 1-3A win. Olivia Lowe drove in two runs for Valley (1-12, 1-7).

Ellwood City 5, Riverside 0 – Amber McQuinston had two doubles, home run and three RBIs and Keira Rozanski hit a double and home run for Ellwood City (12-2) in a nonsection win. Gracelyn Maltarski and Ainslee Freshcorn had two singles apiece for Riverside (5-6).

Hempfield 5, Canon-McMillan 0 – Jade Varhola struck out 13 and Allie Cervola, Lauren Howard and Maggie Howard hit a home run apiece for Hempfield (11-1, 9-1) in a Section 1-6A win. Lyla Mowery doubled for Canon-McMillan (4-7, 4-7).

Jeannette 18, St. Joseph 3 – Grace Stein struck out 15 and had two doubles, a home run and five RBIs and Addasyn Stout and Sophia Soloman drove in two runs apiece to lead Jeannette (8-0, 7-0) to a Section 3-A win. Julie Spinelli homered for St. Joseph (1-7, 1-7).

Jefferson-Morgan 11, Mapletown 1 – Kallyn Novak pitched a two-hit shutout and Emilee Bazzoli hit a home run for Jefferson-Morgan (5-5, 5-3) in a Section 2-A win over Mapletown (4-6, 4-4).

Ligonier Valley 7, Derry 0 – Cheyenne Piper fanned 12, hitting 400 strikeouts for her career, in a Section 3-3A win for Ligonier Valley (10-1, 7-1). Neve Dowden doubled and drove in two runs for the Rams. Katie Dunlap hit two singles for Derry (2-11, 0-8).

Mars 9, Moon 5 – Laura Craska hit a home run, Abby Robinson tripled and Steph Esswein had two singles, a double and three RBIs to lead Mars (5-9, 4-4) to a Section 3-5A win. Sydney Ray hit a single and double for Moon (2-10, 2-6).

Neshannock 8, Villa Maria Academy 0 – Addy Frye stuck out 10 and allowed three hits in seven innings for Neshannock (12-0) in a nonsection win over Villa Maria Academy. Gabby Perod had two doubles and two RBIs for the Lancers.

Shaler 12, Oakland Catholic 2 – Olivia Gieraltowski hit a home run and Jayla Antomachi and Kate Boyle drove in two runs apiece to lead Shaler (10-2, 7-2) to a Section 1-5A win over Oakland Catholic (1-9, 0-8).

South Fayette 6, Mohawk 2 – Emma Early struck out 10 and Maddie Cavenaugh went 2 for 2 with a home run and three RBIs to lead South Fayette (9-2) to a nonsection win. Addy Moskal and Maya McGreal each doubled for Mohawk (11-2).

Boys lacrosse

Hempfield 14, Baldwin 0 – Jonah Forsyth and Maddyn Bompiani had three goals apiece, Breckin Vilella and Logan Helman both scored twice, and Joey Domonkos recorded the shutout as Hempfield picked up a Section 1-3A win.

Indiana 25, Winchester Thurston 0 – Parker Bowersox scored five goals, Landin Wilson added four and Garrett Goodrich finished with three to lead Indiana to a Section 2-2A win. Ash Lockard, Carson Beatty and Tommy Kaufmann had two goals each.

Girls lacrosse

Peters Township 19, Hempfield 0 – Emma Kail and Ava Maloni recorded a hat trick and Grace Kail had two goals and six assists to secure her 150th point of her career for Peters Township in a Section 1-3A shutout of Hempfield.

Pine-Richland 19, Freeport 2 – Cate Gentille had a hat trick to help Pine-Richland dispatch Freeport in Section 2-3A. Ashley Woodward, Taylor Wilkinson, Kendyll Jerry, Mallory Boivin, Claire Mill and Addie Robb scored twice each for the Rams.

Quaker Valley 16, Trinity 1 – Sydney Hewitt had four goals and four assists to lead Quaker Valley to a Section 2-2A win. Alexa Westwood added four goals and two assists, Lucy Roig scored three goals, and Anna Campbell had two goals for the Quakers.

Boys volleyball

Canon-McMillan 3, Moon 2 – Luke Bockius had a team-best 16 kills and William O’Bryan had 22 assists and 35 serves with no service errors to lead Canon-McMillan to a Section 1-3A win. Landon Patterson had nine kills and four blocks and Ben Kopec recorded seven kills and 18 digs. Aidan Boyd had 24 kills for Moon.

Penn-Trafford 3, Plum 0 – Bradley Heinbaugh had 13 kills, Drew Sherwin added 12 digs and Nathaniel Rugh dished out 30 assists in a Section 3-3A win for Penn-Trafford (10-2, 6-1). Keith Otto had eight kills and Owen Gisi and Connor Evangeliste finished with five each.
