High school roundup for May 3, 2024: Lexie Hames back in form for Seneca Valley, throwing no-hitter with 15Ks

Seneca Valley softball star Lexie Hames was limited to one inning in the circle during a section showdown with Hempfield on Wednesday due to shoulder soreness.

In a bit of good news for Seneca Valley and bad news for the rest of the Class 6A teams in the WPIAL, Hames was back to pitching without limitations Friday.

She threw a complete-game no-hitter with 15 strikeouts and also hit a two-run homer in the third inning to lead Seneca Valley to an 8-0 victory over Canon-McMillan (6-9, 6-9). Kara Pasquale tripled and drove in two runs and Bella Gross and Neve Miller each doubled for the Raiders (17-1, 14-1).

Avella 4, Burgettstown 0 – Avery Rado threw a complete-game shutout with seven strikeouts and hit a single and two doubles and Kaylee Donnelly drove in two runs for Avella (6-12) in a nonsection win. Madison Keating doubled for Burgettstown (6-10).

Beaver 12, Ambridge 2 – Sami Springman went 3 for 3 with two doubles, a home run and five RBIs and Kenzie Springer and Rhiannon Rabassi each tripled to lead Beaver (3-13, 2-10) to a Section 3-4A win. Jaylynn Campbell hit a triple for Ambridge (1-13, 1-10).

Brownsville 4, McGuffey 3 – Ava Clark struck out 11 and Zaydee Downer hit two singles and a double and drove in two runs as Brownsville (4-9, 3-7) knocked off second-place McGuffey (11-3, 8-2) in Section 4-3A. McKenna Crothers and Kaylee Ward each doubled for the Highlanders.

Charleroi 1, Peters Township 0 – Maddie Lancy brought home Kaylee Sypolt with a squeeze bunt in the seventh inning in a nonsection win for Charleroi (13-4). Addie Brunette and Emersen Gatten had two hits apiece for Peters Township (4-13). Lyla Brunner threw three scoreless innings of relief to earn the win for the Cougars.

Chartiers Valley 7, Bethel Park 3 – Marta Gualazzi had a triple, home run and two RBIs and Delaney O’Connor tripled and drove in a run to lead Chartiers Valley (12-3) past Bethel Park (8-9) in a nonsection win.

Elizabeth Forward 4, Ligonier Valley 0 – Addy Nigut hit two singles and drove in two runs and Shelby Telegdy hit an RBI double for Elizabeth Forward (16-1) in a nonsection win over Ligonier Valley (11-4).

Franklin Regional 9, Fox Chapel 7 – Ciara Camacho hit a single, double and home run and Iyarah Hicks drove in four runs to lead Franklin Regional (9-8) to a nonsection win. Caitie Troutman and Mia Dunleavy drove in two runs apiece for Fox Chapel (6-9).

Frazier 14, Leechburg 0 – Addison Hiles struck out 10 and hit two singles and a triple and drove in three runs to lead Frazier (11-0, 11-0) to a Section 3-A win. Danica Sopack hit two singles for Leechburg (9-7, 6-6). Jayanna Ciferno singled, doubled and drove in two runs and Emilia Bednar went 2 for 2 with a triple for the Commodores.

Hempfield 10, Pine-Richland 9 – Riley Miller hit a walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh as Hempfield (16-1, 14-1) rallied from 8-2 down after two innings for a Section 1-6A win. Claire Mitchell hit a double and home run and Emily Griffith and Allie Cervola each homered for the Spartans. Mackenzie Gillis hit two singles and a home run and drove in four runs for Pine-Richland (9-9, 8-7).

Indiana 8, Plum 7 – Kaylee Cass and Ella Myers homered and Hannah Ianarelli hit two singles and a triple for Indiana (12-4) in a nonsection win. Riley Stephans hit two doubles and drove in two runs for Plum (10-5).

Latrobe 11, Greensburg Salem 1 – Mya McHugh struck out 12, Macie McHugh went 2 for 2 with two RBIs and Vanessa McMichael drove in three runs to lead Latrobe (9-8) to a nonsection win. Sammie Reusser and Alle Scarpa each doubled for Greensburg Salem (7-11).

New Castle 9, Moniteau 7 – Aycealea Rose singled, doubled and drove in two runs and Olivia Hood singled and doubled to lead New Castle (6-9) to a nonsection win over Moniteau.

North Allegheny 8, Knoch 2 – McKenna Rowlands singled, doubled and drove in two runs, Zoe Rychel hit a RBI triple and Anne Melle drove in two runs to lead North Allegheny (11-5) to a nonsection win. Marlee Fraser doubled for Knoch (11-6).

Norwin 4, Mt. Lebanon 0 – Bailey Snowberger went 2 for 2 with a triple and Diem Wardzinski drove in two runs as Norwin (8-9, 7-8) clinched a playoff berth in Section 1-6A. Olivia Park doubled for Mt. Lebanon (1-16, 1-14).

South Park 14, Seton LaSalle 0 – Sydney Sekely threw a five-inning no-hitter, struck out eight and went 3 for 3 with a double and an RBI to lead South Park (15-1, 10-0) past Seton LaSalle (4-9, 3-7) in Section 4-3A. Kylie Mettrick hit two doubles and drove in three runs and Ally Wilder went 3 for 3 with a double and RBI for the Eagles.

Baseball

Brownsville 8, California 1 – Harlan Davis went 3 for 4 with a triple and two RBIs and Jonathan Vasbinder hit two doubles and drove in two runs for Brownsville (1-13) in a nonsection win. Logan Hartley hit two singles for California (4-12).

Burgettstown 9, Charleroi 0 – James Leuice tripled and had three RBIs and Riley Kennedy drove in two runs for Burgettstown (9-3-1, 9-1) in a Section 1-2A win over Charleroi (9-6, 6-4). Winning pitcher Eric Kovach struck out 10 for the Blue Devils.

Carrick 16, Woodland Hills 2 – Mason Maxwell went 3 for 4 with a double, triple and four RBIs and John Grimm doubled and drove in two runs to lead Carrick (9-0) to a nonsection win. Charles Henderson went 2 for 2 with a double for Woodland Hills (0-14).

Knoch 5, Shady Side Academy 1 – Logan Cypher singled, tripled and homered and Cody Stull threw a complete game, allowing one run on four hits, to lead Knoch (8-8) to a nonsection win. Josh Valinsky had two hits for Shady Side Academy (8-6).

Latrobe 1, Williamsburg 0; Latrobe 9, Fannett-Metal 1 – Latrobe (16-3) won a pair of games in Altoona. In the first game, Louie Amatucci singled, doubled and drove in a run and Cole Short threw a complete-game, five-hit shutout. In the second game, Eli Boring singled, tripled and drove in two runs. Hayden Porterfield gave up three hits and an unearned run in five innings and Vince Gaskey closed it out with two scoreless innings with five strikeouts.

Moniteau 13, New Castle 1 – Keagan Book went 4 for 4 with a double and two RBIs and Ian Ross had three hits and three RBis to lead Moniteau past New Castle (1-16) in a nonsection game.

OLSH 10, New Brighton 2 – Brandon Brazell singled, doubled and drove in two runs and Gino Williams and Sean Hudac doubled and drove in a run apiece to lead OLSH (14-4, 11-1) to a Section 2-2A win. Carter Jackson hit two singles for New Brighton (8-7, 5-7).

Penn Hills 6, McKeesport 5 – Isaiah Mitchell hit two singles and drove in two runs for Penn Hills (1-11) in a nonsection win. Brady Boyle went 2 for 2 with a home run and two RBIs for McKeesport (0-14).

Ringgold 5, Plum 0 – James Nash allowed three hits in 5⅔ innings and struck out five for Ringgold (8-9) in a nonsection win over Plum (11-6). Andrew Sprinkle singled, doubled and drove in two runs for the Rams.

South Side 12, Western Beaver 1 – RJ Fischer went 4 for 5 with two doubles and Carter Wilson was 3 for 4 with two doubles and three RBIs to power South Side (7-7) to a nonsection win. Christian Stefankis went 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI for Western Beaver (7-7).

West Allegheny 5, Ambridge 3 – Will Gubba hit two singles and double for West Allegheny (13-3) in a nonsection win. Nate Thomas doubled for Ambridge (5-9).

Track & field

Pine-Richland Invitational – Hampton’s Dale Hall had a big day, winning the 1,600, 3,200, mile and two mile runs and being a part of the winning 3,200 relay team.

Greensburg Salem’s Luke Rullo won the long jump and triple jump, Fox Chapel’s Mason Miles took first in the shot put and discus, and North Hills’ Gamaliel Mogire winning the 110 hurdles and being a part of the winning 1.600 relay team.

On the girls side, Shady Side Academy’s Chelsea Hartman won the 1,600, 3,200, mile and two mile. Latrobe’s Brylee Bodnar won the 300 hurdles and ran a leg on the winning 1,600 relay team.

Pine-Richland swept the pole vault with Jake Jones winning for the boys and Nadia Constantakis the girls.

Girls lacrosse

Quaker Valley 8, North Allegheny 5 – Lucy Roig scored four times to propel Quaker Valley past North Allegheny in nonsection play. Alexa Westwood and Sydney Hewitt added two goals each for the Quakers.
