High school roundup for May 6, 2024: Ellwood City keeps playoff hopes alive with 13-inning win

Jordan Keller smacked a two-run single in the 13th inning to score the go-ahead runs as Ellwood City kept its playoff hopes alive with a 6-3 victory over Shenango in Section 1-3A baseball Monday.

Nathan Kennedy and Will Nardone each drove in two runs for the Wolverines (10-7, 5-6). Joey Campoli went 2 for 3 with an RBI for rthe Wildcats (8-9, 5-6). Ellwood City and Shenango will face off again Tuesday with the winner claiming a playoff spot.

Armstrong 8, Kiski Area 2 – Winning pitcher Brayden Wright homered and drove in three runs and Logan Badac doubled and plated a pair as Armstrong (6-10) defeated Kiski Area (11-8) in a nonsection affair. Blake Fritz hit a solo homer and Brad Rupert drove in a run for the Cavaliers. Mason Schrecengost and Rory Pschirer each knocked in a run for the River Hawks.

Bethel Park 1, Ringgold 0 – Ryan Walsh belted a walk-off home run to propel Bethel Park (11-6-1) over Ringgold (8-10) in a close nonsection contest. Dylan Paul got the win for the Black Hawks.

Burgettstown 10, Frazier 0 – Matt Bredel struck out five and allowed just one hit in six innings to lead Burgettstown (9-3-1, 9-1) to a Section 1-2A victory. Sam Elich went 3 for 4 with five RBIs and Carson Tkalcevic drove in three for the Blue Devils. Brant Alekson had the only hit for Frazier (4-11, 2-8).

California 2, West Greene 1 – Eli Carpenter and Spencer Petrucci each brought home a run as Weston Monticelli picked up the win for California (5-12, 4-7) in a Section 1-A contest. Johnny Lampe went 2 for 3 with an RBI and Darren Knight fanned 10 for West Greene (10-5, 7-4).

Carmichaels 21, Mapletown 3 – Robbie Wilson-Jones and Colin Andrews each drove in three runs and winning pitcher Liam Lohr went 2 for 2 with a pair of RBIs as Carmichaels (10-4, 7-4) cruised to a Section 1-A win. A.J. Vanata homered and drove in three for Mapletown (2-13, 0-11).

Charleroi 10, Chartiers-Houston 4 – Brock Henderson doubled and drove in three runs, Logan Koteles went 2 for 3 with a pair of RBIs and Kaden Woods picked up the win for Charleroi (10-6, 7-4) in Section 1-2A. Luke Camden went 2 for 4 with a triple and two RBIs for Chartiers-Houston (8-8, 8-3).

Clairton 8, Monessen 3 – Vondae Pearson went 2 for 4 with an RBI and Jeff Thompson got the win for Clairton (4-9, 3-8) in a Section 3-A matchup. R.J. DiEugenio went 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs for Monessen (0-16, 0-11).

Eden Christian 10, Cornell 0 – Noah Emswiler doubled and drove in a pair of runs and Caleb Emswiler belted a solo home run as Eden Christian (13-4, 11-0) shutout Cornell (4-8, 4-7) in Section 3-1A. Enzo Natale struck out 10 in the win and Brett Feldman drove in a run for the Warriors.

Fort Cherry 9, Jefferson-Morgan 1 – Colton Temple homered and drove in three runs and Matt Sieg went 3 for 4 with a double and three RBIs as Ryan Huey got the win for Fort Cherry (10-3, 8-2) against Jefferson-Morgan (6-8, 4-7) in Section 1-A.

Freedom 6, Northgate 2 – Cody Patterson tripled and knocked in a pair of runs, Chase Grable went 2 for 3 with an RBI and Boden Hilliard got the win as Freedom (10-8, 7-6) clinched a playoff berth with a Section 2-2A win. Dwayne Reed had an RBI for Northgate (2-14, 2-11).

Freeport 5, East Allegheny 2 – Freeport (6-10, 4-7) stayed alive in the playoff picture with a Section 3-3A win over East Allegheny (9-5, 5-5). Luke Whitfield went 3 for 3 with three RBIs, Ryan Claypool singled and drove in a pair of runs as Matt Corfield got the win for the Yellowjackets. Chance Odoski doubled and drove in two runs for the Tigers. East Allegheny can clinch a playoff spot with a win over Freeport on Tuesday.

Gateway 7, Penn Hills 3 – Miles Beavin tripled and drove in three runs and winning pitcher Noah Colberg struck out eight in a complete game as Gateway (2-14, 1-9) beat Penn Hills (2-12, 0-11) in Section 1-5A. Isaiah Mitchell tripled and knocked in three for the Indians. Grady Dunsmore went 2 for 4 with an RBI for the Gators.

Greensburg Central Catholic 2, Riverview 1 – Sean Walker and Grant Miller each drove in a run and Tyler Samide earned the win for Greensburg Central Catholic (9-4, 8-2) in Section 3-2A. Jack Loughren knocked in the only Riverview (11-5, 7-3) run.

Jeannette 4, Ligonier Valley 1 – Amari Thomas went 3 for 3 with an RBI and Michael Mason had two hits and drove in a pair as Jeannette (7-8, 5-6) clinched the fourth and final playoff spot in Section 3-2A. Brayden Luttner was the winning pitcher and Evan Yargeau picked up the save for the Jayhawks. Duncan Foust went 3 for 4 with a double for Ligonier Valley (5-10, 3-8).

Knoch 11, Burrell 1 – Logan Cypher and Sean Morgan each doubled and homered and Hunter Lang picked up a win as Knoch (9-9) beat Burrell (9-7) in nonsection play. Isaac Lacinski and Ryan Bates each had a base hit for the Bucs. Cooper Allison went 2 for 2 with a triple and two RBIs for the Knights.

Laurel 15, Aliquippa 0 – Brayden Faulkner doubled and drove in a run, Kolton Carlson collected two hits and two RBIs while Hunter Kobialka tossed a three-inning no-hitter as Laurel (9-8, 7-5) rolled to a Section 2-2A win over Aliquippa (0-12, 0-12).

Mars 6, Hampton 2 – Charles Bickel went 2 for 4 with a double and a pair of RBIs while Jacob Maple got the win for Mars (8-6) in a nonsection defeat of rival Hampton (7-8). Matthew Erka tripled for the Talbots.

Moon 5, Blackhawk 1 – Caden Schmidt doubled and drove in two runs, Coleman Fletcher drove in another run and Joey Marasco pitched Moon (9-7) to a nonsection win. Cody Woodward singled in a run for Blackhawk (7-10).

Mt. Pleasant 10, Southmoreland 0 – Jacob Kitz threw a five-inning, two-hit shutout with six strikeouts and Brady Poole drove in three runs as Mt. Pleasant (12-4, 10-1) defeated Southmoreland (3-11, 2-9) in Section 4-3A. Brady Painter had two hits and an RBI and Sonny Marne and Dane Firmstone each drove in a pair for the Vikings.

Neshannock 4, Quaker Valley 3 – Winning pitcher Jake Rynd doubled and drove in a run as Neshannock (10-8, 7-4) beat Quaker Valley (4-12, 2-8) in Section 1-3A.

New Brighton 8, South Side 6 – Vernon Krepps and Carter Jackson each brought home two runs and Jaxson Zahn got the win as New Brighton (9-7, 6-7) survived a five run rally in the seventh form South Side (7-8, 5-8) for a Section 2-2A win. Casey Lewis knocked in a pair of runs for the Rams.

North Catholic 10, Butler 0 – Thomas Schafale allowed three hits and struck out 10 in a five-inning shutout for North Catholic (12-4) in a nonsection win over Butler (6-12). Owen Beatrice hit two doubles and had three RBIs and Blake Primrose went 2 for 4 with a pair of RBIs for the Trojans.

Norwin 9, Baldwin 2 – Jackson Huss doubled and plated a pair while Benjamin Geissler, Nate Silberman and Keegan Carr each knocked in a run as Matt Rivera picked up a win for Norwin (10-9, 8-7) in Section 2-6A. James Naret went 2 for 3 for Baldwin (1-17, 0-14).

OLSH 8, Seton LaSalle 2 – Winning pitcher Iseia Schulz went 2 for 3 with a pair of RBIs and Sean Hudac went 2 for 2 with an RBI as OLSH (15-4, 12-1) bested Seton LaSalle (14-2, 12-1) in Section 2-2A. Connor Rothhaar doubled for the Rebels.

Riverside 3, Mohawk 2 – Drake Fox hit a two-run home run and winning pitcher Zack Hare crushed a solo homer to lead Riverside (12-1, 10-1) to a Section 1-3A victory. Aidan Bowser doubled for Mohawk (16-2, 10-1). Hunter Garvin picked up a save for the Panthers. The teams will meet again Tuesday with the section title on the line.

Serra Catholic 11, Brentwood 0 – Owen Dumbrosky doubled and knocked in three runs, Collin Holmes doubled and drove in two and Tyler Skaggs fanned five in five innings as Serra Catholic (14-1, 11-0) shut out Brentwood (6-10, 2-9) in Section 3-2A.

Sewickley Academy 5, Carlynton 4 – Winning pitcher Jordan Smith doubled and knocked in two runs while Will Straka and William Pietragallo each drove in a run as Sewickley Academy (5-9, 5-6) held on to defeat Carlynton (11-8, 6-5) in Section 3-A. Sean Hart and Tyler Heinrich each had two RBIs for the Cougars.

South Fayette 6, Montour 3 – Trey Skeen went 2 for 3 with a double and three RBIs, Gino Satira doubled and Bo Stover finished 3 for 4 as South Fayette (7-6) doubled up Montour (13-3) in nonsection play. Maddox Tarquinio was 2 for 4 for the Spartans. Ethan Rose got the win and Satira picked up a save for the Lions.

St. Joseph 13, Summit Academy 2 – Owen Swanson went 3 for 4 with two doubles and three RBIs to power St. Joseph (3-10, 3-8) past Summit Academy (0-11, 0-11) in Section 2-A. Matt Tomayko doubled and drove in a run and winning pitcher Elliott Szalla had three RBIs for the Spartans.

Steel Valley 8, Bishop Canevin 6 – Immanuel Owens tripled and drove in two runs for Steel Valley (4-11) in a nonsection win. Mason Glover hit a triple and drove in a run for Bishop Canevin (11-4).

Thomas Jefferson 7, Trinity 6 – Ethan Steinmetz and Carter Kirsch each brought home two runs as Dominic Metz got the win for Thomas Jefferson (17-2) in a nonsection matchup. Jonah Williamson doubled and drove in a pair of runs and Matthew Robaugh added an RBI for Trinity (8-8).

Union 12, Springdale 2 – Grayson Blakely knocked in a pair of runs, Mike Gunn went 3 for 4 with an RBI and Rocco Galmarini got the win for Union (12-3, 11-0) in a Section 2-A matchup. John Hughes and Alex Wylly each drove in a run for Springdale (5-7, 5-6). The Dynamos clinched a playoff spot despite the loss because Rochester lost to Western Beaver.

Upper St. Clair 3, Canon-McMillan 1 – Aidan Crochier homered, doubled and collected two RBIs and Nico D’Orazio went 3 for 3 as Luca Baird got the win for Upper St. Clair (6-11) in nonsection play. Cam Russell hit a pair of doubles and drove in a run for Canon-McMillan (7-11).

Valley 4, Deer Lakes 3 – Winning pitcher Dante Taliani hit a walk-off single in the 10th inning as Valley (14-4, 8-3) edged out Deer Lakes (5-12, 3-8) in Section 3-3A. Jacob Staraniec and Nikolas Heakins each tripled for the Vikings. Noah Shurina, Anthony Smith and Nolan Danka each drove in a run for the Lancers, who were eliminated from playoff contention with the loss.

Washington 8, Beth-Center 1 – Caleb Patton struck out nine in 5⅔ innings while Ian Callan drove in two runs and Ayvari Chandler and Isaac Charnik each knocked in a run as Washington (8-8, 5-6) clinched a playoff berth with a Section 1-2A win over Beth-Center (8-9, 4-7). Ethan Varesko drove in a run for the Bulldogs. Both teams will make the playoffs if Beth-Center can best the Prexies in Tuesday’s game.

Waynesburg 10, McGuffey 2 – Alex Vansickle hit three doubles and brought home four runs, Ethan Kiger went 2 for 4 with three RBIs and winning pitcher Trenton Zupper doubled and drove in a run for Waynesburg (11-3, 8-2) in a Section 4-3A victory. Samuel Stout doubled for McGuffey (6-7, 6-5). Derek Turcheck doubled and had a pair of RBIs for the Raiders.

Western Beaver 3, Rochester 2 – Winning pitcher Luke Tremble struck out 10 and drove in a pair of runs at the plate to lead Western Beaver (8-7, 8-3) to a Section 2-A win. Lennon Miller went 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI for Rochester (4-10, 4-7).

Softball

Apollo-Ridge 11, Leechburg 0 – Jocelyn Snyder threw a five-inning no-hitter and struck out 11 for Apollo-Ridge (8-5) in a nonsection win over Leechburg (8-8). Camdyn Kowalczyk doubled and tripled and Jaden Mull and MaKenna Syster doubled and drove in a run apiece for the Vikings.

Avonworth 3, North Hills 0 – Alivia Lantzy threw a complete-game three-hit shutout and struck out 13 for Avonworth (12-3) in a nonsection win. Emma Obersteiner hit a two-run homer for the Antelopes. Kaylee Bischoff and Addison Winner each doubled for North Hills (13-3).

Bentworth 12, OLSH 1 – Nora Lindley tripled and had three RBIs and Zoe McDonald hit two singles and drove in three runs to lead Bentworth (13-2, 11-0) to a Section 3-2A win. Morgan O’Brien singled, tripled and drove in a run for OLSH (12-4, 10-2). Winning pitcher Sydney Gonglik struck out 14 for the Bearcats.

Beth-Center 12, Burgettstown 6 – Allison Lynch, Keira Lamp and Kendall Walsh doubled and drove in three runs apiece as Beth-Center (6-6, 5-6) clinched a playoff spot in Section 3-2A. Layla Sherman singled, doubled and drove in three runs and Raya Sentipal doubled and tripled for Burgettstown (7-11, 5-7).

Carmichaels 10, Jefferson-Morgan 0 – Carys McConnell hit two home runs and drove in five runs and Bailey Barnyak drove in two runs for Carmichaels (13-2, 10-1) in a Section 2-A win. Asslyn Snyder doubled for Jefferson-Morgan (6-8, 6-6).

Chartiers-Houston 7, Ligonier Valley 0 – Meadow Ferri struck out 12 and went 3 for 3 with a double, two home runs and five RBIs and Lauren Rush hit a two-run homer for Chartiers-Houston (14-2) in a nonsection win. Cheyenne Piper struck out 13 for Ligonier Valley (11-5).

Fox Chapel 11, Deer Lakes 0 – Ella Eisner threw a six-inning, three-hit shutout and doubled and drove in two runs for Fox Chapel (7-9) in a nonsection win. Sophia Laurenza hit two singles for Deer Lakes (9-9). Maria Stiger had a double and two RBIs, Mia Dunleavy hit two singles and had three RBIs and Adina Rosen hit two singles, a triple and two RBIs for the Foxes.

Franklin Regional 5, South Fayette 4 – Toryn Fulton went 2 for 2 with a home run and two RBIs and Iyarah Hicks hit a single and double and drove in a run to lead Franklin Regional (10-8) to a nonsection win. Emma Early struck out 10 and hit a two-run homer for South Fayette (10-5).

Greensburg Salem 7, Greensburg Central Catholic 4 – Alle Scarpa struck out nine and doubled with two RBIs to lead Greensburg Salem (8-11) to a nonsection win. Marley Perrone singled and drove in two runs for the Golden Lions. Abigail Dei went 4 for 4 with a double and four RBIs for Greensburg Central Catholic (6-6).

Keystone Oaks 11, Peters Township 5 – Kailyn Brannon and Kylie Stahl drove in three runs apiece and Chloe Butler hit two singles and had two RBIs to lead Keystone Oaks (7-9) to a nonsection win. Skylar Lemansky homered for Peters Township (4-14).

Knoch 11, Karns City 8 – McKenna Brailey drove in four runs and Grace Hensch hit two singles and had two RBIs to lead Knoch (12-6) to a nonsection win over Karns City.

Monessen 12, St. Joseph 2 – Joey Hurst went 3 for 4 with a double, triple, home run and three RBIs and Grace Clingenpeel had three singles and seven RBIs to lead Monessen (6-6, 6-5) to a Section 3-A win. Jamie Noonan went 2 for 2 with a home run and two RBIs for St. Joseph (3-10, 3-9).

Neshannock 6, Armstrong 0 – Addy Frye and Abigail Measel combined to throw a one-hit shutout for Neshannock (17-0) in a nonsection win over Armstrong (14-2). Gabby Quinn singled, doubled and drove in two runs for the Lancers.

North Allegheny 13, Mt. Lebanon 3 – Carlyn Vaupel went 2 for 2 with a home run and two RBIs, Erin Dagen hit two singles and drove in three runs and Alison Yanchak doubled and drove in two runs for North Allegheny (12-5, 11-5) in a Section 1-6A win. Olivia Park hit a single and home run for Mt. Lebanon (1-17, 1-15).

Northern Garrett (MD) 9, Albert Gallatin 7 – Madysen Gilpin singled, doubled and drove in three runs for Northern Garrett (MD) in a nonsection win. Tatum Durst and Gianna Seese drove in two runs apiece for Albert Gallatin (2-12).

Penn Hills 13, Gateway 1 – Isabella DeCarlo struck out seven, allowed two hits and went 3 for 3 with a double and four RBIs to lead Penn Hills (5-8) to a nonsection win over Gateway (1-15). Hannah Pugliese went 2 for 2 with a double and two RBIs and Cassidy Burkovich hit a two-run triple for the Indians.

Penn-Trafford 13, Connellsville 3 – Mack Keenan went 3 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs and Lorryn Sepe tripled and drove in a run for Penn-Trafford (11-5) in a nonsection win. Cali Leichliter singled and drove in a run for Connellsville (11-7).

Pine-Richland 6, Canon-McMillan 3 – Mackenzie Gillis singled, doubled and drove in two runs, Marissa DeLuca hit two doubles with an RBI and Calle Henne hit three singles to lead Pine-Richland (10-9, 9-7) to a Section 1-6A win. Olivia Ford hit a double and home run and drove in two runs for Canon-McMillan (6-10, 6-10).

Punxsutawney 9, Indiana 7 – Maggie Cunningham singled, homered and drove in three runs and Hannah Ianarelli hit three singles with an RBI for Indiana (13-4) in a nonsection loss against Punxsutawney.

Seneca Valley 13, Butler 2 – Lexi Hames hit two home runs and drove in three runs, Olivia Herrem had two doubles with two RBIs and Kara Pasquale singled and doubled with three RBIs to lead Seneca Valley (18-1, 15-1) to a Section 1-6A win. Kelsey Ogin hit an RBI single for Butler (3-12, 2-12).

Shady Side Academy 10, Northgate 0 – Becca Schriver threw a five-inning one-hit shutout with seven strikeouts and went 2 for 3 with a double, triple and four RBIs to lead Shady Side Academy (2-8) to a nonsection win over Northgate (5-8). Savanna Muir hit a three-run double for the Bulldogs.

Shaler 11, Hampton 7 – Isabella Mubel went 3 for 3 with a double and three RBIs, Haley Machajewski had two singles, a triple and two RBIs and Jayla Antomachi singled, doubled and drove in two runs to lead Shaler (14-2) to a nonsection win. Katelyn Dubee doubled and drove in two runs for Hampton (13-3).

Shenango 8, New Castle 4 – Brianna Aluisa went 3 for 3 with a double, home run and three RBIs and Kennedi Lynn drove in two runs to lead Shenango (9-7) to a nonsection win. Olivia Hood hit three singles and drove in two runs for New Castle (6-10).

South Side 11, Freedom 1 – Maya Ringhoff threw a six-inning two-hitter with eight strikeouts for South Side (12-4) in a nonsection win. Kenidi Cook doubled, tripled and drove in three runs for the Rams. Shaye Bailey doubled for Freedom (4-10).

Southmoreland 8, Belle Vernon 6 – Makayla Etling hit a double, triple and home run, Maddie Brown hit a two-run homer and Taylor Doppleheuer hit three doubles to lead Southmoreland (14-2) to a nonsection win. Mia Zubovic hit a two-run homer for Belle Vernon (13-6).

Union 6, Mohawk 2 – Tori May drove in three runs and Irelyn Fisher doubled and drove in a run to lead Union (17-1) past Mohawk (13-4) in a nonsection win.

Upper St. Clair 2, Plum 1 – Rachel Scharrer hit a walk-off RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh for Upper St. Clair (7-9) in a nonsection win. Brooklyn Kemp, Caroline Barnard and Lainie Guarino had two hits apiece for the Panthers. Brooke Bernosky and Makenzie Marotta each doubled for Plum (10-6).

West Greene 16, Avella 1 – Kylee Davis went 3 for 4 with a double and three RBIs and Payton Gilbert singled, doubled and drove in two runs for West Greene (10-6, 8-4) in a Section 2-A win. Avery Rado hit two singles and drove in the lone run for Avella (6-13, 1-11).

Boys volleyball

North Catholic 3, Central Catholic 2 – Lucas Gunther had 16 kills, Drew Palmer added 11 kills and Luke Shoemaker had six kills and four blocks as North Catholic (12-2) beat Central Catholic (8-7) in a nonsection match.

Girls lacrosse

Pine-Richland 20, Seneca Valley 5 – Cate Gentile had five goals to lead Pine-Richland past Seneca Valley in Section 2-3A. Madeline Mill and Mallory Boivin added four goals apiece for the Rams.

Quaker Valley 15, Knoch 4 – Lucy Roig and Taylor Cupelli had four goals each to pace Quaker Valley in a Section 2-2A win over Knoch.
