High school roundup for May 16, 2024: Sydney Sekely sparks South Park into 3A semifinals

Sydney Sekely threw a two-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts to lead No. 3 South Park to a 4-0 win over No. 6 Central Valley in the WPIAL Class 3A softball quarterfinals Thursday.

Grace Kempton doubled and homered and Kylie Mettrick singled, tripled and drove in a run for the Eagles (18-1), who will meet No. 2 Ligonier Valley in the semifinals. Abigale Stewart and Maddie Spirnak had hits for the Warriors (12-3).

Bentworth 8, Shenango 1 – Sydney Gonglik allowed three hits and one unearned run and struck out 15 to lead No. 2 Bentworth (15-2) to a Class 2A quarterfinal win. Nora Lindley went 3 for 3 with two doubles and four RBIs to lead the Bearcats at the plate. Kayla O’Dell doubled and drove in a run, Sofia Gaussa had two hits and an RBI, and Gonglik went 3 for 3 for Bentworth, which will face No. 3 Laurel in the semifinals. Kennedi Lynn struck out seven and scored a run for No. 7 Shenango (11-8).

Carmichaels 7, South Side 0 – Bailey Barnyak threw a one-hit shutout with 14 strikeouts to lead No. 2 Carmichaels (15-2) to a Class A quarterfinal win. Carys McConnell went 4 for 4 with an RBI, Kaitlyn Waggett singled, tripled and drove in three runs, and Megan Voithofer had a single, double and an RBI for the Mighty Mikes, who will take on No. 3 Chartiers-Houston in the semifinals. Allison DeLong had a single in the sixth inning for No. 7 South Side (13-5) to break up the no-hitter.

Chartiers-Houston 16, Jeannette 0 – Ella Richey went 4 for 4 with a triple, two home runs and five RBIs to lead No. 3 Chartiers-Houston (16-2) to a Class A quarterfinal win in four innings. Lauren Rush also homered twice, Taryne Drilak singled, doubled and drove in two runs, and winning pitcher Meadow Ferri allowed one hit and struck out nine for the Bucs, who will take on No. 2 Carmichaels in the semifinals. Grace Stein had the lone hit for No. 6 Jeannette (12-3).

Laurel 4, Charleroi 0 – Autumn Boyd pitched a two-hit shutout with 13 strikeouts and helped her cause with a double and an RBI as No. 3 Laurel (17-4) won in the Class 2A quarterfinals. Addie Deal went 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs and Hayden Seifert went 3 for 3 and drove in a run for the Spartans, who will face No. 2 Bentworth in the semifinals. Sofia Celaschi struck out seven for No. 6 Charleroi (14-5).

Neshannock 11, Riverside 1 – Katherine Nativio homered and Gabby Perod went 3 for 3 with two doubles and an RBI to lead top-seeded Neshannock (19-0) in the Class 2A quarterfinals. Winning pitcher Abigail Measel gave up two hits and struck out 10. Miley Anderson had three hits and an RBI and Gabby Quinn and Jaidon Nogay each doubled and knocked in a pair for the Lancers, who will meet No. 5 OLSH in the semifinals. Carlee Crawford tripled and Mia Williams singled and drove in a run for No. 9 Riverside (7-10).

OLSH 10, Serra Catholic 5 – Leann Walzer singled, doubled and drove in five runs and Morgan O’Brien had three hits and an RBI to lead No. 5 OLSH (14-4) to a Class 2A quarterfinal victory. Julian Pinter doubled and drove in two runs and Ava Ciummo had a single, double and an RBI for the Chargers, who will meet No. 1 Neshannock in the semifinals. Kelly Morrissey homered and Cassidy Trahan doubled, tripled and knocked in a run for No. 4 Serra Catholic (12-5).

Union 11, Jefferson-Morgan 2 – Mia Preuhs allowed two hits and two unearned runs with 15 strikeouts and Bella Cameron singled, homered and drove in a pair to lead No. 1 Union (19-1) in the Class A quarterfinals. Mallory Gorgacz doubled and drove in two runs and Addie Nogay had a single and a triple for the Scotties, who will meet the winner of Friday’s game between No. 4 Frazier and No. 5 West Greene in the semifinals. Brooklynne Snyder singled and drove in a run for No. 8 Jefferson-Morgan (7-9).

Boys volleyball

North Allegheny 3, Canon-McMillan 0 – Peter Bratich had 11 kills and four blocks and Will Robertson and Stone Gaertner added nine kills each to lead No. 2 North Allegheny (12-1) past No. 7 Canon-McMillan (14-3) in the Class 3A quarterfinals. Will Hahn had 16 digs and Ryan Quatman dished out 18 assists. Luke Bockius led the Big Macs with eight kills and three digs. Justin Peters had 14 assists. The Tigers will meet No. 3 Butler in the semifinals Tuesday.

Shaler 3, Hempfield 0 – Dante Palombo had 13 kills and Logan Peterson added 10 to lead No. 1 Shaler (14-1) past No. 9 Hempfield (10-7) in the Class 3A quarterfinals. Zach Rosenwald had 32 assists and Cameron Miller recorded 14 digs for the Titans, who will take on No. 5 Seneca Valley in Monday’s semifinals.

Boys lacrosse

North Allegheny 11, Pine-Richland 8 – Nick Sichak and Travis Lamark scored four goals each and Evan Lyon added three as No. 4 North Allegheny (13-6) gave coach John Rullan his 300th career victory with a win in the Class 3A quarterfinals. Cooper Zancosky scored four goals for No. 5 Pine-Richland (12-7). The Tigers will meet No. 1 Shady Side Academy in the semifinals Monday.

Upper St. Clair 16, Peters Township 13 – Ryan Buonomo scored four goals and Dalton Yates, Holden Rickel and Oscar Leimkuehler added three goals each to lead No. 3 Upper St. Clair (13-3) past No. 6 Peters Township (14-6) in the Class 3A quarterfinals. The Panthers will meet No. 2 Mt. Lebanon in the semifinals Monday.

Girls lacrosse

Penn-Trafford 15, Blackhawk 14 – Sophia Green scored the game-winning goal with 1:35 to play, leading No. 4 Penn-Trafford (15-3) past No. 5 Blackhawk (15-3) in the Class 2A quarterfinals. The Warriors will meet No. 1 Mars in the semifinals Monday.

Upper St. Clair 13, Peters Township 10 – Kat Mammarella had three goals and an assist and Molly Powell, Riley Powell, Anna Capobres and Calla Dressler scored two goals each to lead No. 3 Upper St. Clair (12-5) past No. 6 Peters Township (10-9) in the completion of a Class 3A quarterfinal that was suspended Wednesday night. The Panthers will face No. 2 Pine-Richland in the semifinals Monday.
