It has been a rough first two rounds of the state playoffs for WPIAL baseball and softball teams.
The district has only three baseball and six softball teams left midway through the path to Penn State.
WPIAL 3A champion Avonworth takes over the top spot in the baseball power rankings, with district runners-up Indiana in Class 4A and Eden Christian Academy in Class A still left from District 7 in the hunt for state gold.
Elizabeth Forward is the new top team on the softball side.
The Warriors are still alive in the PIAA Class 4A playoffs, and Thomas Jefferson is the lone WPIAL team remaining in Class 5A.
District 7 is guaranteed to have a team in the PIAA Class 2A and A championship games.
The 2A state semifinals pit rivals from the north as undefeated Neshannock takes on Laurel for a third time this spring.
The Class A PIAA final four has rivals from the south going at it for a fourth time this season when Chartiers-Houston battles Carmichaels.
Here are the second-to-last power rankings for the 2024 season. Teams are listed with overall record and last week’s ranking. These weekly rankings have zero classification boundaries.
