The WPIAL released new section alignments for the next two-year cycle in all sports, and changes will be implemented starting this fall.

This summer, the Tribune-Review will break down changes for each of the WPIAL sports.

Here’s a look at the upcoming WPIAL girls golf season:

2023 WPIAL Champions

WPIAL 3A team champion: Peters Township

WPIAL 2A team champion: Greensburg Central Catholic

WPIAL 3A individual champion: Mya Morgan, Elizabeth Forward, 71 (-1)

WPIAL 2A individual champion: Sophia Covelli, Neshannock, 89 (+17)

New teams in

Girls golf is one of the fastest growing sports in Western Pennsylvania. The presence of eight new teams in WPIAL competition next season proves that.

Class 3A will add three new teams: Trinity, Latrobe and Plum.

The five new teams joining Class 2A competition are Belle Vernon, Beaver, Ellwood City, North Catholic and Sewickley Academy.

Notable changes

While the girls golf sections in Class 2A remained largely intact in realignment, there were numerous teams switching sections in Class 3A.

Section 1 added three new teams to the fold to join Blackhawk, North Allegheny, Pine-Richland and Seneca Valley. Butler, Mars and Shaler came over from Section 4.

Section 2 had only one team move into the section in realignment. Moon, which came over from Section 1, will join Bethel Park, Mt. Lebanon, Peters Township, South Fayette, Upper St. Clair and the newly established team from Trinity.

Section 3 had the least amount of movement in 3A heading into the next few seasons. Elizabeth Forward, which came from Section 2, joins Connellsville, Franklin Regional, Gateway, Hempfield, Norwin and Penn-Trafford for the next two seasons at least.

Section 4 added a few new teams. Indiana and Oakland Catholic, which came from Section 3 and Section 1, respectively, will be matched up with Armstrong, Fox Chapel and Kiski Area and and the newly formed Latrobe and Plum teams.

While Class 3A expanded by only three teams this season, Class 2A will have five more teams (15) than it did the last few seasons (10).
