Greensburg’s Mark Goetz has best finish in Korn Ferry Tour

Greensburg native Mark Goetz began the final round of the Korn Ferry Tour’s Price Cutter Charity Championship tied for the lead.

While he didn’t win his first event, he did have his best finish.

Goetz began the day at 19-under-par and finished at 21-under tied for third. It was the first top-10 finish of his career.

Matt McCarty won the event by finishing 25-under. Tommy Gainey finished second at 22-under.

Goetz carded a 9-under 63, the lowest round of his career, in the third round. It was his 18th career tour start.

The West Virginia grad jumped to 78th in the latest projected rankings.

Shipley update

Mt. Lebanon native Neal Shipley finished tied for 40th at the PGA’s Barracuda Championship in Truckee, Calif.

Shipley finished with 31 points in the Stableford format.

Nick Dunlap won the event with 49 points.

WPGA Open begins

The 121st Western Pennsylvania Golf Association’s Open Championship will begin Monday at Indiana Country Club.

The three-day event concludes Wednesday.

Some of the top golfers in the field include John Aber, Sean Knapp, Devin Gee, Gregory Meyer, Darin Kowalski, Mike Van Sickle, Jake Sollon, Dan Obremski, Justin Moose and returning champion Beau Titsworth.

The field includes 46 amateurs and 30 professionals. The field will be trimmed to 32 and ties after the second round.
