Hempfield QB Dom Detruf hoping to be cleared after checkup by cardiologist

Hempfield senior quarterback Dom Detruf will see a cardiologist Tuesday for further evaluation of his acute myocarditis, an inflamed heart condition that could limit his participation in training camp and beyond.

The cardiologist is Dr. Aryan Aiyer, who also treats Pittsburgh Steelers players.

Detruf participated in heat acclimation week, which was a better sign, but he was not permitted to run. He threw passes and worked with other quarterbacks. He wore a helmet and pads like his teammates.

Full-contact practice begins Monday.

The original plan was to get him back by Aug. 28, but that could change with continued test results that are favorable.

Previous tests showed normal heart function. He still has plans to have an MRI and stress test Aug. 28. The outcome of his appointment Tuesday could expedite the additional testing.

“I did as much as I could, but I didn’t want to risk anything,” Detruf said of heat week. “The conditioning is the main thing I am (concerned about). But I feel like if I am cleared, I can get that back in a couple of days.”

Myocarditis often resolves itself through rest and limited activity. Inflammation can weaken the heart muscle and make it more difficult to pump blood.

“Best-case scenario is they don’t see anything, and I get cleared sooner than we thought,” said Detruf, who threw for 1,016 yards and nine touchdowns as a sophomore.

“The frustrating part,” Hempfield coach Nick Keefer said, “is that he feels fine. He really hasn’t missed anything so far. He’s been here every day. We may have to get creative (offensively) until he comes back.”
