High school football roundup for Sept. 6, 2024: Aliquippa rallies past Avonworth

Tiqwai Hayes reeled off three unanswered touchdown runs in the second quarter as Aliquippa rallied from an early deficit to give first-year coach Vashawn Patrick his first win 46-20 over Avonworth on Friday night.
Bryce Metz scored on a pair of 1-yard touchdown runs as Avonworth (1-1) jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter of the nonconference matchup.
Hayes scored on runs of 22, 48 and 25 yards to give the Quips (1-0) the lead. Sa’Nir Brooks scored on a 62-yard run on the last play of the first half and Qalil Goode returned an interception for a touchdown for Aliquippa.
Albert Gallatin 29, Connellsville 26 — Bronx Jamison scored on a 26-yard run with 1:47 left in the fourth quarter as Albert Gallatin (2-1) defeated Connellsville (0-3) in nonconference play.
Avella 44, Springdale 0 — Avella (1-2) put up 318 yards of offense — 307 on the ground — in its nonconference shutout over Springdale (0-2). Charles Rush threw for one touchdown and ran for another for Avella, which scored all its points in the first half.
Bentworth 35, Charleroi 28 — Ty Watson tossed for 135 yards and a touchdown and added two rushing TDs as Class A Bentworth (2-1) won at Class 2A Charleroi (0-3). Ben Hays ran for 142 yards and a touchdown for Bentworth. Jackson Keranko paced Charleroi’s offense with 116 passing yards and two touchdowns.
Bethel Park 46, Armstrong 7 — Tanner Pfeuffer threw for 326 yards and four touchdowns to lead Class 5A No. 5 Bethel Park (3-0) to the nonconference win at Armstrong (2-1). Ja Vaughn Moore ran for 255 yards and two touchdowns, Mitch Paschi caught nine passes for 130 yards and three touchdowns and Jackson Bruckner added five receptions for 144 yards and one TD.
Brentwood 21, Sto-Rox 14 — Forrest Betz scored on an 88-yard kickoff return and a 10-yard pass from Colton Rosing as Class A Brentwood (1-2) beat Sto-Rox (0-2). Rosing threw two touchdown passes.
Bishop Canevin 42, Steel Valley 6 — Myontae Mott rushed for 106 yards and three touchdowns and returned a kick 78 yards for a TD to lead Class A No. 5 Bishop Canevin (1-1) to the upset over Class 2A No. 1 Steel Valley (1-2). Kole Olszewski threw for 133 yards and one touchdown in the win.
Butler 35, Meadville 11 — Mark Klemz ran for 173 yards and two touchdowns as Butler (2-1) beat Meadville (2-1) in a nonconference game. Alex Teff threw for 134 yards and two Butler touchdowns.
Carmichaels 50, Frazier 20 — Cannon Bubka threw for 140 yards and five touchdowns to lead Carmichaels (1-0) over Frazier (1-2) in nonconference play. Brandon Yekel caught three passes — all for touchdowns — for 111 yards for Carmichaels.
Chartiers Valley 62, Indiana 0 — Tayshaun Lewis ran for 160 yards and three touchdowns as Chartiers Valley (1-1) downed Indiana (1-2) in nonconference play. Chartiers Valley led at halftime, 48-0.
Chartiers-Houston 48, Mapletown 12 — Aaron Walsh threw for 155 yards and a touchdown and ran for 147 yards and four TDs to lead Chartiers-Houston (2-1) over Mapletown (1-2) in nonconference play. Nathan Brezinski caught seven passes for 123 yards and a touchdown in the win.
Clairton 50, Shady Side Academy 0 — Class A No. 2 Clairton (3-0) won big at Class 2A Shady Side Academy (1-2) in a game that was called at halftime.
Deer Lakes 34, Derry 12 — Zier Williams ran for three touchdowns to lead Deer Lakes (3-0) to the nonconference win at Derry (1-2). Zach Grant caught a TD pass from Jake Fleisher, who also ran for a score for the Lancers. Damauri Robinson and Brady Brown had touchdown runs for the Trojans.
Elizabeth Forward 41, East Allegheny 14 — In nonconference play, Ryan Messina threw for 189 yards and two touchdowns and scored twice on the ground as Class 3A No. 5 Elizabeth Forward (1-2) beat East Allegheny (0-3). Charlie Nigut added 141 yards and two touchdowns while scoring on a 57-yard pass from Messina.
Ellwood City 28, Neshannock 21 — Class 2A No. 4 Ellwood City (2-0) won on the road at Class A No. 4 Neshannock (2-1).
Fort Cherry 41, West Greene 0 — Josh Silveira, filling in at quarterback while Matt Sieg recovers from a broken thumb, went 13 for 18 passing for 215 yards and four touchdowns to lead Class A No. 1 Fort Cherry (3-0) to a nonconference win over West Greene (0-3). Sieg still made an impact on the game, running eight times for 77 yards and two scores. Evan Rogers had four catches for 100 yards and a TD for the Rangers. Shane Cornali, Braydon Cook and Ryan Huey also had touchdown catches.
Gateway 22, Plum 15 — Elsidro Bryant threw for 256 yards and two touchdowns to lead Gateway (1-2) to a nonconference win against Plum (0-3). Shawn Moorfield, Jr. caught seven passes for 179 yards and one touchdown for Gateway while teammate Amari Gans ran for one touchdown and caught a 14-yard pass from Bryant in the fourth quarter for another. Darian Nelson caught a 21-yard TD pass from T.J. Futules, and John Nonneberg ran for a score for Plum.
Hopewell 35, Ambridge 34 (OT) — James Armstrong scored on a 2-yard run, followed by his conversion run, to give Class 3A Hopewell (2-1) the overtime win against Class 4A Ambridge (1-1). Zavion Lewis scored on Ambridge’s overtime possession on a 2-yard run. Armstrong threw for 176 yards and a touchdown and ran for 61 yards and two TDs. Lewis rushed for 167 yards and two touchdowns.
Imani Christian 42, Beaver 28 — David Davis scored three touchdowns and Stephen Vandiver threw for 209 yards and a TD and ran for two more scores to lead Imani Christian (3-0) to a nonconference win. Davis scored on a 62-yard catch and runs of 3 and 2 yards. Vandiver scored on runs on 9 and 38 yards as the Saints took a 22-0 lead. Quarterback Trey Clear threw for 290 yards and four touchdowns — two to Brady Mayo and one each to Drey Hall and Amari Jackson for Beaver (2-1).
Jeannette 34, Ligonier Valley 27 — Kymon’e Brown ran for 237 yards and two touchdowns and threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to Noah Sunder to lead Jeannette (3-0) to a nonconference victory. Brown scored on runs of 9 and 1 yard in the fourth quarter. Marcus McGowan and Jayce Powell also had rushing touchdowns for the Jayhawks. John Jablunovsky ran for 222 yards and two touchdowns for Ligonier Valley (1-2).
Jefferson-Morgan 49, Burgettstown 14 — In nonconference play, Houston Guseman threw for 185 yards and four touchdowns to lead Jefferson-Morgan (3-0) to the win over Burgettstown (1-1). Guseman added two rushing touchdowns while teammate Deakyn Dehoet caught two scoring passes and returned a punt for another TD.
Leechburg 48, Serra Catholic 27 — Jayden Floyd rushed for 254 yards and four touchdowns to lead Leechburg (3-0) to the nonconference win at Serra Catholic (0-3). Leechburg trailed by one at halftime before scoring 35 second-half points. Marcus Holt and De’reon Washington each returned kickoffs for touchdowns for Serra Catholic.
Monessen 56, Beth-Center 30 – TyVaughn Kershaw scored six touchdowns in leading Monessen (3-0) to a nonconference victory over Beth-Center (0-2). Kershaw has 16 touchdowns so far this season.
Montour 14, Trinity 7 — Daniel Batch’s 6-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter lifted Class 4A No. 2 Montour (2-0) to the nonconference win against Trinity (1-2).
North Allegheny 18, Penn Hills 14 — Brady Brinkley threw for 57 yards and ran for 59 yards and a touchdown as Class 6A No. 1 North Allegheny (3-0) beat Class 5A Penn Hills (0-3). Alabama recruit Peter Notaro kicked field goals of 53, 52 and 30 yards for Penn Hills while averaging 49 yards on three punts. Penn Hills’ Devin Harris tossed for 240 yards and a touchdown to Martel Palmer, who caught seven passes for 176 yards.
North Hills 21, Mars 17 — Kelly McCarthy caught a 31-yard touchdown pass from Johnell Edison with 2:05 left in the game as Class 5A North Hills (3-0) rallied to defeat Class 4A No. 4 Mars (1-2). North Hills trailed heading into the fourth quarter, 17-7. Luke Goodworth threw for 154 yards and a touchdown for Mars.
Penn-Trafford 14, Moon 7 — In nonconference play, Tasso Whipple ran for 161 yards and a 73-yard touchdown as Penn-Trafford (2-1) beat Moon (1-1). Johnny Lovre added 114 passing yards and a 40-yard touchdown pass to Jessie Lisbon for Penn-Trafford.
Peters Township 28, Mt. Lebanon 0 — Nolan DiLucia threw for 206 yards and two touchdowns to Nick McCullough as Class 5A No. 1 Peters Township (3-0) beat Class 6A Mt. Lebanon (0-3). McCullough caught five passes for 134 yards.
Ringgold 21, Yough 19 — Ringgold (1-2) ended a 27-game losing streak with a nonconference victory over Yough (2-1). Raidon Kuroda ran for 172 yards and a touchdown for the Cougars.
South Allegheny 37, Carlynton 13 — South Allegheny (3-0) jumped to a 28-0 halftime lead on way to beating Carlynton (2-1) in nonconference play.
South Fayette 13, Canon-McMillan 10 — Drew Welhorsky threw for 152 yards and a touchdown and added a rushing TD to lead Class 5A South Fayette (3-0) to the win over Class 6A No. 4 Canon-McMillan (0-3). Ty Jansma threw for 157 yards and one touchdown in the loss.
South Park 42, Keystone Oaks 6 — Robert Lenzi threw for 89 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 81 yards and one TD as Class 2A No. 5 South Park (2-1) defeated Keystone Oaks (0-2) in a nonconference matchup. Eric Doerue rushed for 91 yards and two touchdowns and added a TD reception for South Park.
Southmoreland 49, Laurel Highlands 13 — Anthony Smith threw for 281 yards and three touchdowns to lead Class 3A Southmoreland (3-0) to the win at Class 4A Laurel Highlands (1-1). Elliot Premus caught four passes for 138 yards and ran for a touchdown while Makel Darnell caught a scoring pass from Smith and returned a punt 56 yards for a touchdown. Laurel Highlands’ Noah Lion threw for 83 yards and two touchdowns to Scott McClay.
Washington 35, Union 6 — Tristan Reed rushed for two touchdowns as Class 2A No. 3 Washington (2-1) defeated Union (0-2) in nonconference play.
Waynesburg Central 28, California 18 — Jacob Stephenson threw for 169 yards and one touchdown as Class 2A Waynesburg Central (2-1) beat Class A California (1-2). Lee Qualk ran for 146 yards and a touchdown for California.
West Mifflin 49, Baldwin 0 — Armand Hill ran for 171 yards and six touchdowns to lead Class 4A West Mifflin (2-0) to victory over Class 5A Baldwin (0-3).
