High school football roundup for Sept. 20, 2024: Canon-McMillan beats Mt. Lebanon in OT

Zach Barzd kicked a 32-yard field goal in overtime to lift No. 5 Canon-McMillan to a 17-14 Class 6A win against Mt. Lebanon (0-5, 0-2) on Friday night.

Barzd earlier kicked field goals of 27 and 26 yards. Ty Jansma completed 17 of 33 passes for 208 yards for the Big Macs (2-3, 1-0).

Pat Smith threw for 192 yards, and Noah Schaerli caught 10 passes for 137 yards and a touchdown for Mt. Lebanon.

North Allegheny 36, Norwin 14 — Brady Brinkley threw for 156 yards and a touchdown and scored on a 53-yard run as top-ranked North Allegheny (5-0, 2-0) beat No. 4 Norwin (2-3, 0-2) in a Class 6A matchup. Norwin’s Tristyn Tavares ran for 126 yards and two touchdowns before leaving in the second quarter due to an injury.

Class 5A

North Hills 48, Fox Chapel 7 — Kelly McCarthy threw for three touchdowns and ran for one more to lead North Hills (4-1, 1-1) to the Northeast Conference win against Fox Chapel (1-3, 0-2). Anthony Fourquet scored on a 10-yard run for the Foxes.

Pine-Richland 43, Plum 7 — In a Northeast Conference game, Grant Argiro kicked five field goals and Aaron Strader threw for 178 yards and three touchdowns as No. 2 Pine-Richland (4-0, 2-0) defeated Plum (1-4, 1-1). Cameron Wilson caught a 15-yard TD pass from Antonio Hanzlik for the Mustangs.

Class 3A

Avonworth 50, Hopewell 19 — Bryce Metz ran for three touchdowns and Carson Bellinger threw for 212 yards and one TD as No. 5 Avonworth (2-2, 1-0) defeated Hopewell (2-3, 0-2) in the Western Hills Conference. James Armstrong threw for 187 yards and three touchdowns for Hopewell.

North Catholic 42, McGuffey 0 — Ryker Kennedy caught four passes for 125 yards and two touchdowns as North Catholic (3-2, 2-0) blanked McGuffey (0-4, 0-2) in Western Hills Conference play. Tom Arth added three rushing touchdowns.

Class 2A

Keystone Oaks 14, Charleroi 7 — Billy Bricker ran for 159 yards and two touchdowns to lead Keystone Oaks (2-2, 2-0) to the Century Conference win against Charleroi (0-5, 0-2).

Washington 41, Sto-Rox 16 — Tristan Reed threw for 136 yards and two touchdowns and added two rushing touchdowns to lead Washington (3-2, 1-1) to the Century Conference win at Sto-Rox (0-4, 0-2).

Ellwood City 43, Freedom 3 — Chris Smiley threw for 189 yards and two touchdowns as No. 2 Ellwood City (4-0, 2-0) beat Freedom (1-2, 0-2) in the Midwestern Athletic Conference. Gavin Partridge caught four passes for 98 yards and a touchdown.

Mohawk 23, Beaver Falls 0 — In the Midwestern Athletic Conference, Sam List ran for 100 yards and a touchdown as Mohawk (2-2, 1-1) beat Beaver Falls (0-5, 0-2).

Riverside 20, New Brighton 13 — Ayden Garcia threw for 168 yards and three touchdowns as Riverside (3-2, 2-0) beat New Brighton (3-2, 1-1) in a Midwestern Athletic Conference game. Jaron King threw for 212 yards and a touchdown for New Brighton.

Western Beaver 33, Union 6 — Western Beaver (3-1, 2-0) beat Union (0-4, 0-2) in Midwestern Athletic Conference play.

Class A

Laurel 23, Rochester 12 — Laurel (1-4, 1-0) beat Rochester (0-4, 0-2) in Big 7 Conference play.

Neshannock 41, Northgate 14 — Jino Mozzocio threw for 128 yards and three touchdowns and ran for two TDs as No. 5 Neshannock (4-1, 2-0) defeated Northgate (2-3, 0-2) in Big 7 Conference play. Anthony Eakin added 192 rushing yards and one touchdown for Neshannock. Darius Fields scored both Northgate touchdowns — on an 85-yard kickoff return to start the game and on a 70-yard pass from Devontae Smith.

South Side 34, Shenango 21 — In the Big 7 Conference, Mateja Pavlovhch rushed for 129 yards and two touchdowns as No. 3 South Side (4-0, 2-0) defeated Shenango (1-2, 1-1).

Bishop Canevin 29, Cornell 22 — Kole Olszewski threw for 343 yards and four touchdowns to lead No. 4 Bishop Canevin (3-1, 1-0) to the Black Hills Conference win at Cornell (4-1, 1-1). Damar Olds caught seven passes for 126 yards and two touchdowns for the Crusaders. Walter Clarit ran for two touchdowns for Cornell.

Chartiers-Houston 19, Burgettstown 11 — Zeke Watkins rushed for 114 yards and Dominic Andreoli ran for two touchdowns as Chartiers-Houston (3-2, 1-1) beat Burgettstown (1-3, 0-2) in a Black Hills Conference contest.

Clairton 60, Frazier 0 — No. 2 Clairton (5-0, 2-0) picked up the Eastern Conference win at Frazier (1-4, 0-2).

Greensburg Central Catholic 34, Brentwood 12 — Samir Crosby threw three touchdown passes for Greensburg Central Catholic (2-2, 1-1) in its Eastern Conference win over Brentwood (2-3, 1-1).

Bentworth 45, Beth-Center 32 — In the Tri-County South, Ben Hays returned interceptions 27 and 62 yards as Bentworth (3-2, 1-1) took to the road to beat Beth-Center (0-4, 0-2). Ty Watson threw for 182 yards and two touchdowns to Lucas Burt for Bentworth.

California 40, Avella 0 — California (3-0, 2-0) blanked Avella (1-4, 0-2) in Tri-County South play.

Jefferson-Morgan 21, Carmichaels 6 — In the Tri-County South, Houston Guseman ran for 140 yards and a touchdown as Jefferson-Morgan (5-0, 2-0) beat Carmichaels (2-1, 1-1).

West Greene 37, Mapletown 8 — Lane Allison threw for 216 yards and an 81-yard touchdown to Parker Burns as West Greene (2-3, 2-0) defeated Mapletown (1-4, 0-2) in a Tri-County South game. Burns caught four passes for 112 yards.

Albert Gallatin 36, Uniontown 21 — In nonconference play, Albert Gallatin (3-2) defeated Uniontown (2-3).

Ambridge 27, Greensburg Salem 8 – Ambridge (3-1) scored 20 points in the fourth quarter to secure a nonconference victory over Greensburg Salem (4-1). Cooper Dann scored on a 23-yard run for the Golden Lions.

Bethel Park 49, Trinity 7 – Ja’Vaughn Moore rushed for five touchdowns to lead Class 4A No. 5 Bethel Park (5-0) to the nonconference win against Trinity (1-4).

Blackhawk 57, Yough 6 — Stephen Knallay threw for 189 yards and one touchdown as Class 4A Blackhawk (3-2) beat Class 3A Yough (2-3). Sam Stewart rushed for 161 yards and a 90-yard touchdown for Blackhawk, which outgained Yough, 528 yards to 180 yards. Raidon Kuroda threw for 139 yards and Yough’s lone touchdown.

Derry 21, Indiana 0 — Damauri Robinson ran for two touchdowns as Class 3A Derry (3-2) shut out Class 4A Indiana (1-4) in a nonconference game. Justin Papuga also ran for a 2-yard TD for the Trojans.

Elizabeth Forward 40, Baldwin 0 — Ryan Messina threw for 212 yards and five touchdowns and ran for a 65-yard score as Class 3A Elizabeth Forward (2-3) blanked Class 5A Baldwin (0-5).

Hampton 34, Chartiers Valley 29 — Evan McAneny ran for 228 yards and four touchdowns to lead Hampton (2-3) to the nonconference win at Chartiers Valley (2-2). Porter Kelly threw for 113 yards and a touchdown for Hampton.

Martins Ferry, Ohio 49, Brownsville 0 — Martins Ferry, Ohio (4-1) blanked Brownsville (0-3) in nonconference play.

Montour 31, Mars 14 — James Bundridge and Andrew Alston scored on interception returns as Class 4A No. 2 Montour (4-0) beat Mars (1-4) in nonconference play.

Moon 42, Seneca Valley 13 — Andrew Cross threw for 82 yards and a touchdown and ran for 43 yards as Class 5A Moon (3-1) beat Class 6A No. 3 Seneca Valley (1-3).

Morgantown 21, Connellsville 7 — In nonconference play, Morgantown (4-1) beat Connellsville (1-4).

New Castle 42, Knoch 32 — Kaevon Gardner ran for 192 yards and four touchdowns to lead New Castle (4-0) to the nonconference win against Knoch (1-3). New Castle scored three touchdowns in the final 3:15 of the game, including Nate McKnight’s 74-yard kick return and 51-yard reception from Kyrell Harris, who threw for 101 yards. Codi Mullen ran for four touchdowns and threw a TD pass to Kaden Spencer, and Kannon Trofimuk booted 25- and 29-yard field goals for the Knights.

Peters Township 38, West Allegheny 0 — Nolan DiLucia threw for 352 yards and four touchdowns to lead Class 5A No. 1 Peters Township (5-0) to victory at Class 4A West Allegheny (0-2). Nick McCullough caught three passes for 129 yards and two touchdowns.

Quaker Valley 34, Valley 14 — In nonconference play, Atticus Barr threw for 103 yards and a touchdown and Jack Demert ran for three TDs as Quaker Valley (1-3) beat Valley (0-5). Ryan Knapp had a 50-yard fumble return for a touchdown to give Valley an early lead. Zayaan Farron also scored on a 37-yard run for the Vikings.

Southmoreland 32, Ringgold 15 — Anthony Smith threw for 172 yards and two touchdowns as Class 3A Southmoreland (4-1) defeated Class 4A Ringgold (1-4). Amoni Ward threw for 136 yards and both Ringgold touchdowns.

Steel Valley 40, Waynesburg 6 — Donald Barksdale ran for 165 yards and four touchdowns and returned the second-half kickoff 94 yards for another TD to lead Steel Valley (2-3) to the nonconference win over Class 2A No. 5 Waynesburg Central (3-2).

Thomas Jefferson 35, West Mifflin 7 — Luke Kosko threw three touchdown passes, including two to Brayden White, as Class 4A No. 3 Thomas Jefferson (5-0) beat West Mifflin (2-2) in a nonconference game. Tyler Eber added two rushing touchdowns.

Upper St. Clair 31, McKeesport 14 — Dante Coury ran for 187 yards and one touchdown as Class 5A No. 3 Upper St. Clair (5-0) beat Class 4A No. 4 McKeesport (1-4). Julian Dahlem added 104 rushing yards and a touchdown for Upper St. Clair. McKeesport’s Brady Eastman threw for 130 yards and one touchdown to Anthony Cromerdie, who rushed for 103 yards and a TD.

Westinghouse 28, Butler 17 — In nonconference play, Khalil Green threw for 135 yards and a touchdown and ran for two TDs and Westinghouse (4-1) overcame a 17-point halftime deficit to beat Butler (2-3). Alec Teff tossed for 180 yards for Butler.

City League

University Prep 52, Perry 6 — University Prep (1-3, 1-0) downed Perry (0-4, 0-3) in a City League game.
