High school roundup for Sept. 21, 2024: Woodland Hills rolls past Shaler

Cam Walter threw for 146 yards and two touchdowns and added a rushing TD as Woodland Hills raced past Shaler, 49-7, in a nonconference football matchup Saturday afternoon.

Taylor Reid added two rushing touchdowns and Prince Tarrant returned an interception 40 yards for a score for the Wolverines (3-2). Woodland Hills led 35-0 at halftime and outgained Shaler 392-66. Braylon Ronel had a touchdown run for the Titans (2-3).

Boys soccer

Avonworth 2, Canfield (Ohio) 2 – Owen Dugan and Nathan Kline scored and Rowan Carmichael had a pair of assists as Avonworth (7-2-1) played Canfield (Ohio) to a draw.

Beaver 3, Riverside 0 – Ryan Perez, Anthony Furda and Seth Kullen scored to lead Beaver (5-3-1, 4-3-1) past Riverside (2-8, 2-6) in Section 2-2A.

Bentworth 7, South Side 0 – Ryan and Adam Moessner tallied two goals and one assist each as Bentworth (9-0) shut out South Side (2-7) in nonsection play. Aiden McMurray and Billy Moyer each added one goal and one assist.

Gateway 5, Kiski Area 3 – James LoCoco had three goals and an assist to lead Gateway (5-4) to a nonsection win. Brett Rossi and Owen Echegaray added goals for the Gators. Max Valasek, Austin Beck and Seth Hall scored for Kiski Area (0-9).

Penn Hills 2, Burrell 1 – Chase Delehanty and Freddy Takou had goals as Penn Hills (2-8) defeated Burrell (4-5) in nonsection play. Billy Kowalkowski scored a second-half penalty kick for Burrell’s goal.

Plum 3, Latrobe 1 – Gage Adinolfi scored two goals as Plum (9-0-2) beat Latrobe (6-3) in a nonsection game shortened to 45 minutes due to lightning. Roman Agostoni scored for the Wildcats.

Quaker Valley 2, Central Valley 1 – Finn Thompson scored the game-winner and Colin Benge also had a goal for Quaker Valley (7-3, 7-1) in a matchup of top teams in Section 2-2A. Jack Dobronz scored for Central Valley (9-1, 7-1).

Springdale 11, Valley 0 – Colton Gent scored a hat trick and John Duku, Brennan Mattie and Alex Wylly each had a goal and two assists to lead Springdale (7-1) past Valley (0-8) in a nonsection match. Nate Dubas added a goal and an assist for the Dynamos.

Girls soccer

Beaver 6, Riverside 0 – Sydney Chontos scored four goals and Emerson Connelly added two more to lead Beaver (9-0) to a nonsection win over Riverside (3-3-2). Lilia Battalini had two assists and Cali Coups and Kamryn Menhart combined on the shutout.

Burrell 7, Penn Hills 0 – Katie Koehler and Kinlee Moore scored two goals each as Burrell (6-2-1) shut out Penn Hills (1-7-1) in a nonsection game. Dana Barczykowski picked up her second straight clean sheet.

Butler 6, Knoch 0 – Cecelia Wolford had a pair of goals and Ella Nichols, Lucia Leyland, Malina McElroy and Jordan Ryan also scored for Butler (5-5) in a nonsection win over Knoch (1-8-1).

Fox Chapel 3, North Allegheny 0 – In nonsection play, Alyssa Quackenbush scored two goals to lead Fox Chapel (8-0-1) to victory over North Allegheny (6-4).

Moon 4, Thomas Jefferson 0 – Lauren Muhanna, Lilly Snyder, Julia Shaver and Bella Taylor had goals and Anslie Romasco picked up the shutout as Moon (7-1) defeated Thomas Jefferson (5-4) in nonsection play. Kendall Sydek added two assists.

Penn-Trafford 2, Mt. Pleasant 1 (PT) – Miley Currie netted the overtime winner and Riley McIntosh also scored as Penn-Trafford (8-2) handed Mt. Pleasant (8-1) its first loss in a nonsection match. Morgan Gesinski scored for the Vikings.

Quaker Valley 1, Oakland Catholic 0 – Eliza Rahm scored a second-half goal and goalkeeper Ava Hajok recorded the shutout as Quaker Valley (7-2-1) beat Oakland Catholic (4-5) in a nonsection game.

Cross country

Blue Devil Invitational – Norwin swept the team titles and Thomas Gaydos won the boys race in Sharon. Gaydos finished in 16:12, seven seconds ahead of Quaker Valley’s Jonah Montagnese. Luke Simpson finished fifth (16:53) for the Knights.

Annie Czajkowski (19:05) finished third to lead the Norwin girls. Naomi Sheesley of McDonald (Ohio) won in 18:43. While Quaker Valley’s Cecilia Montagnese finished second.

Latrobe’s Emerson Skatell (19:28) finished fifth, followed by Norwin’s Addison Farrah (20:03) and Jillian Ryba (20:06).

PIAA Foundation – Winchester Thurston swept the boys and girls Class A team titles and North Allegheny finished first in the girls Class 3A team race in Hershey.

Winchester Thurston’s Eli DeSimone (16:42) won the boys Class A race. Teammate Charlie Routledge (17:15) was fifth.

Carlynton’s Bridget McNamara (20:18) won the girls Class A race. Winchester Thurston was led by fourth-place Sarah Nixon (20:46) and fifth-place Abigail Weinstein (20:52).

Robin Kucler (19:24) took fifth in the girls Class 3A race to lead the Tigers to the title.
