Freeport junior running back Amos Glenn was doing pushups on the sideline. He got advice from his dad. When Glenn returned to the game, he ran harder as requested.
“My shoulder popped out of place,” Glenn said. “It was dislocated. I thought my season was over. The trainer came over and popped it back in. It hurt real bad.”
Glenn scored what is believed to be a school-record six touchdowns and finished with 244 yards on 27 carries during a 48-20 Allegheny 7 Conference win over Valley on Friday night at Freeport Area Athletic Stadium.
It was a strong performance for Glenn, who missed time with ACL and MCL injuries in middle school. Glenn pulled himself out of the game after Freeport’s first play from scrimmage. Glenn was dragged down after a 6-yard run and was grabbing his shoulder.
“I just moved it around, stretched it out,” Glenn said. “I had to run harder. That’s what it was.”
Glenn now has 766 rushing yards.
“Amos is a tough kid,” Freeport coach John Gaillot said. “It was just a stinger.”
The Yellowjackets (4-2, 2-1) have won back-to-back games for the first time this season. Glenn’s running helped steady Freeport, which hit an early snag.
The Yellowjackets were caught off guard by Valley wide receiver Payton Eason. He settled into a hole in the middle of the field and took a pass from Vikings quarterback Mason Simmons 62 yards for a touchdown four plays into the game.
“We figured looking at tape that we could establish a passing game on the outside,” Valley coach Mark Adams said. “We wanted to establish short routes, crisp routes and quick routes. We wanted to get the quick game going. There were some routes open, we just didn’t catch the ball.”
Freeport safety Danny King set up the Yellowjackets’ first score. He intercepted Simmons on Valley’s second possession and returned the ball to the Viking 22.
Glenn would cash in two plays later on a 12-yard touchdown run. Freeport took the lead for good, 13-7, by capping a 10-play, 66-yard drive with a 2-yard touchdown run by Glenn. Glenn also scored on runs of 3, 89, 9 and 3 yards. His 89-yard scoring run was on Freeport’s first play of the second half, which extended the Yellowjackets’ lead to 27-7.
It set the tone for Freeport’s defense, ending the Vikings’ third possession with an interception. After Valley moved the ball 65 yards on its opening scoring drive, the Vikings finished the game with 197 total yards.
Valley’s best scoring chance after halftime was on its first possession. The Vikings recovered a Freeport fumble, and Valley got in the red zone but turned it over on downs.
“We were resilient,” Gaillot said. “They had the fire inside their body that they didn’t want them to score. We take great pride in holding people out of the end zone.”
Sean Selinger scored the Yellowjackets’ other touchdown on a 73-yard interception return. Nicholas Heakins scored twice for Valley.
