High school roundup for Sept. 28, 2024: Big plays boost Monessen past South Side

Monessen used a barrage of big plays to bounce back from its first loss of the season and blitz previously unbeaten South Side, 32-17, in a nonconference game Saturday.
Trailing 17-12 at the half, the Greyhounds took the lead for good on an 82-yard run by Tavian Taylor. Monessen (5-1), which lost to Fort Cherry last week, later scored on a 50-yard pass to Jay’veon Jeffries from TyVaughn Kershaw on a halfback option and a 69-yard interception return by Taylor.
In the first half, Monessen scored on a 51-yard pass to Jeffries from Tim Kershaw and a 98-yard kickoff return by TyVaughn Kershaw.
Freshman quarterback Dawson Frasier threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to Andrew Corfield and scored on a 1-yard run for South Side (4-1).
Boys soccer
Avonworth 7, Mohawk 1 – Calder Mahan had a hat trick and Rowan Carmichael, JImmy Quinn, Nathan Kline and Abdoulaye Barry also scored for Avonworth (8-2-2, 8-1-1) in a Section 2-2A win over Mohawk (1-11, 1-10).
Beaver 2, Keystone Oaks 1 – Ryan Perez and Brayden Cosky scored in the final three minutes of regulation to lead Beaver (6-4-1, 5-4-1) to a Section 2-2A comeback win over Keystone Oaks (4-6-1, 4-6-1).
Butler 4, Kiski Area 1 – Thomas Sheptak had two goals and an assist, Everett Reges and Noah Simmons also scored and Mason Anderson added two assists for Butler (3-8-1) in a nonsection win. Landon Drum scored for Kiski Area (0-12).
Freeport 2, Greensburg Central Catholic 0 – Angelo Porco scored both goals for Freeport (6-5-2) in its nonsection win against Greensburg Central Catholic (3-5-1). Judah Thompson made eight saves for the shutout.
Hempfield 5, Greensburg Salem 1 – Alessio Ferraresi scored three goals to lead Hempfield (4-8) to the nonsection win against Greensburg Salem (1-11). Braden Crowe added a goal and two assists while Sawyer Leuthold chipped in a goal and an assist.
Moon 4, Ambridge 0 – Evan Thomas scored two goals and Fin Dengel added a goal and an assist as Moon (13-0, 8-0) defeated Ambridge (2-6, 2-6) in Section 4-3A play. Will Guarino and Sam Brancato combined for the shutout.
North Allegheny 4, Hampton 0 – Noah Hutter, Nathan Katari, Myk Denysenko and Owen Lopresti scored and Ryan Young and Emiliano Perin combined on the shutout to lead North Allegheny (9-2-1) to a nonsection win over Hampton (6-2-3).
Plum 1, Franklin Regional 1 – Austin Kolankowski scored for Plum (10-0-3) and Jovan Sankoorikal scored for Franklin Regional (7-2) in a nonsection overtime tie.
Riverview 2, Sewickley Academy 1 – Carter Loughren scored off a pass from Kyle Schuetz with less than two minutes left in the game to lift Riverview (6-4) to the nonsection win over Sewickley Academy (5-6-1). Riverview has won six straight after losing its first four games of the season.
Seneca Valley 8, Chartiers Valley 0 – Zachary Garma and Chase Lively scored two goals each as Seneca Valley (8-4) shut out Chartiers Valley (6-5) in nonsection play.
Springdale 2, Burrell 1 – In nonsection play, Matt Lawrence scored two goals, both off of assists from Brennan Mattie, as Springdale (9-2) defeated Burrell (6-6). Billy Kowalkowski scored Burrell’s goal on a second-half penalty kick.
Girls soccer
Avonworth 2, Penn Hills 0 – In a nonsection matchup, Greta O’Brien tallied a goal and an assist and Elena Zimmerman kept a clean sheet as Avonworth (5-7-1) defeated Penn Hills (1-10-1).
Burrell 3, Springdale 0 – McKenna Miller had a goal and an assist as Burrell (8-2-1) beat Springdale (9-1) in nonsection play. Dana Barczykowski recorded the shutout.
Butler 4, Kiski Area 0 – Cecelia Wolford, Lucia Leyland, Kara Lubinsky and Ava Soley netted goals for Butler (6-6) in a nonsection win over Kiski Area (5-6).
Seneca Valley 6, Fort LeBoeuf 0 – Ashlee Libby had two goals and Karly Majeski, Sophia Lawryk, Cassie Leonard and Kami Christensen also scored for Seneca Valley (8-2-1) in a nonsection win over Fort LeBoueuf.
