High school roundup for Oct. 7, 2024: South Fayette gets past Thomas Jefferson to clinch section title

Mia Deramo scored the game-winning goal as South Fayette clinched the Section 3-3A girls soccer title with a 1-0 victory over second-place Thomas Jefferson (8-5-1, 7-2) on Monday night. Gabby Beinecke set up the winning goal for the Lions (12-3, 9-0).

Beaver 6, Ambridge 1 – Mia Furda had three goals and an assist, Sydney Chontos also had a hat trick and Ana Hahn handed out a pair of assists for Beaver (12-0, 8-0) in a Section 3-2A win. Norah Marchionda scored for Ambridge (6-8-1, 2-6-1).

Bentworth 4, Beth-Center 2 – Megan Keturakis had a pair of goals and Bella Moyer and Brielle Dillon also scored to spark Bentworth (13-1, 7-1) to a Section 2-A win over Beth-Center (2-9, 1-8).

Bethel Park 7, Chartiers Valley 0 – Callee Dalbon collected three goals and two assists and River Hendrych Bondra added two goals and an assist to lead Bethel Park (7-5-3, 5-4-2) past Chartiers Valley (1-11, 0-10) in Section 2-3A. Emma Impellicceiri and Grace Ferency also scored and Freya Blatz recorded the shutout for the Black Hawks.

Butler 6, Allderdice 0 – Cecelia Wolford scored twice while Kat McGuire, Jess Calhoun, Malina McElroy and Kara Lubinsky each tallied a goal as Butler (8-7) cruised to a nonsection win against Allderdice (4-8).

Carlynton 1, Aquinas Academy 0 – Riley Mauro broke a scoreless tie in the second half off a feed from Gigi Choate as Carlynton (12-3, 7-3) defeated Aquinas Academy (8-5, 6-5) in Section 3-A.

Chartiers-Houston 6, California 2 – Ava Capozzoli scored a hat trick and Cecilia Hess, Nanna Bimpong and Hailey Seige each had a goal to lead Chartiers-Houston (9-3, 7-2) to a Section 2-A win. Leah Hartley scored twice for California (4-6-1, 3-4-1).

Deer Lakes 9, East Allegheny 3 – Claire Cacurak recorded a hat trick and Tessa Hollibaugh netted a pair of goals to lead Deer Lakes (9-3-2, 7-2) to a Section 4-2A win over East Allegheny (1-8, 0-8). Reese Waruszewski, Emily Jimerson, Helena Hagner and Addison Sagi each added a goal for the Lancers.

Franklin Regional 2, Blackhawk 1 – Brooke Blakley scored the tying goal early in the second half and Elliana Canfield delivered the game-winner in the closing minutes of regulation as Franklin Regional (10-5) beat Blackhawk (5-9) in a nonsection match.

Greensburg Central Catholic 10, Apollo-Ridge 0 – Riley Kerr had four goals and an assist, Sienna Voetsch scored twice and Sophia Fisher had a goal and an assist to lead Greensburg Central Catholic (3-5, 3-5) past Apollo-Ridge (2-7, 2-7) in Section 4-A. Addison Vacanti, Ava Fisher and Ainsleigh Stickle also scored.

Hempfield 5, Woodland Hills 2 – Jiana Patterson recorded a hat trick and Jessi Jury and Danyelle Auckerman each added a goal as Hempfield (5-11, 3-6) beat Woodland Hills (3-9-1, 2-7) in Section 1-4A.

Indiana 4, West Mifflin 0 – Emily Betsinger, Jillian Ranes, Madelyn Willimas and Hannah Ianarelli scored to boost Indiana (4-8-2, 3-5-2) past West Mifflin (3-10-1, 0-9-1) in Section 4-3A. Julia Antonacci recorded the shutout for Indiana.

Keystone Oaks 2, Belle Vernon 1 – Nevaeh Hamilton and Makenzie Muick tallied goals for Keystone Oaks (10-6, 8-3) in a Section 1-2A win. Ava Scalise scored for Belle Vernon (8-8, 7-4).

Latrobe 11, Armstrong 2 – Maddy Petruzzi and Geli Dent each recorded a hat trick and had two assists while Annalyse Bauer scored twice to lead Latrobe (7-4-1, 6-3) to a Section 1-4A win over Armstrong (2-14, 1-8). Robin Reilly, Ava Yurko and Sophia Trunzo each added a goal for the Wildcats.

Laurel Highlands 7, Albert Gallatin 0 – Ava Ruvalcaba and Adrianna Walker scored two goals apiece while Elle Mancini, Camryn McClean and Neela Hill each added a goal as Laurel Highlands (7-6, 4-5) blanked Albert Gallatin (1-9, 1-7) in Section 3-3A.

Moon 9, Trinity 0 – Kendall Dydek scored a hat trick and Quinn Arnold added a pair of goals for Moon (11-2, 10-1) in a Section 2-3A win over Trinity (2-9, 1-9). Julia Shaver, Lillian Snyder, Riley LaFayette and Anna Palm also scored for the Tigers.

Mt. Pleasant 5, Southmoreland 1 – Rylin Bugosh recorded a hat trick, Morgan Gesinski and Caitlyn Fullman each tallied a goal and goalkeeper Laurel Rummel had an assist as Mt. Pleasant (13-1, 9-0) secured the Section 4-2A title with a win over Southmoreland (9-6, 5-4).

North Catholic 1, Shady Side Academy 0 (OT) – Simone Sharpless scored the winning goal and Marina Camino preserved the shutout as North Catholic (11-2, 6-2) beat Shady Side Academy (5-8-1, 3-4-1) in Section 2-2A.

Oakland Catholic 7, Uniontown 2 – Corinna Martella, Emma Gompers and Alex Straub scored two goals each to lead Oakland Catholic (6-7, 5-4) past Uniontown (3-11, 1-8) in Section 3-3A.

Obama Academy 2, Penn Hills 1 (OT) – Brooklyn Potter scored both goals for Obama Academy (2-10) in a nonsection win against Penn Hills (1-13-1).

Peters Township 4, Mt. Lebanon 0 – Taylor McCullough had a pair of goals, Cailin Martin and Marina Hajnosz also scored and Molly Kubistek and Kaitlyn Strine combined on the shutout for Peters Township (13-0-1, 8-0-1) in a Section 2-4A win over Mt. Lebanon (9-5-1, 4-5).

Pine-Richland 5, North Hills 0 – Lily Rosenwasser, Molly Baker, Emme Kline, Anna Amato and Charlie Ozelski scored for Pine-Richland (9-5, 5-3) in a Section 3-4A win over North Hills (3-12, 0-7).

Plum 3, Kiski Area 1 – Brenna McLaughlin and Emily Grubich each had a goal and an assist and Gianna Revetta also scored to power Plum (12-1, 10-0) to a Section 4-3A victory. Alexis Zidek scored for Kiski Area (6-7-1, 6-4-1).

Quaker Valley 4, Central Valley 0 – Ari Bosh, Annabel Miko, Mia Modrovich and Maddie Gatehouse were the goal scorers and Ava Hajok kept a clean sheet to help Quaker Valley (11-2-1, 7-1) past Central Valley (6-7, 3-6) in Section 3-2A.

Seton LaSalle 10, Serra Catholic 0 – Angelina McGrath scored a hat trick to pace Seton LaSalle (10-2-2, 9-1-1) in a shutout win over Serra Catholic (1-10, 0-9) in Section 3-A. Anna Porter, Torri Carter, Sydney Morgan, Elizabeth Sokos, Riley Haizlip, Sydney Towers and Kennedy Bakota each added a goal for the Rebels.

South Park 9, Ringgold 1 – Arianna Beck scored a hat trick as Ella Viyten and Addison Kerr each added a pair of goals to power South Park (10-4-1, 10-0) to a Section 1-2A win over Ringgold (4-10-1, 3-7-1).

Upper St. Clair 7, Connellsville 1 – Meredith Huzjak scored four goals to pace Upper St. Clair (8-5-2, 5-2-2) in a Section 2-4A win against Connellsville (4-12, 0-9). Natalia Disora, Callie Roberts and Mary Mascaro each tallied a goal for the Panthers.

Waynesburg 10, Brownsville 0 – Kolbi Rastoka, Emily Rafferty and Avery Davis each tallied two goals while Bree Clutter, Izzy Talpas and Jaden Tretinik each added a goal for Waynesburg (11-2, 7-2) in a Section 2-A win over Brownsville (0-12-1, 0-8-1). Rylei Rastoka scored a goal and dished out five assists for the Raiders.

Winchester Thurston 3, Riverview 0 – Avi Keller, Margherita Memoli and Emily Tea scored to propel Winchester Thurston (8-5, 7-3) past Riverview (8-3, 7-3) in Section 4-A.

Yough 9, Ligonier Valley 0 – Daisy Miller, Mya Broadwater and Gionna Piontka each scored a pair of goals while Brooke Wieland, Leah Slavick and Britany Baumeister added a goal apiece for Yough (12-5, 5-4) in a Section 4-2A shutout win over Ligonier Valley (1-12, 0-8).

Boys soccer

Brentwood 5, Carrick 2 – Carlos Duran had a hat trick and Mohammed Ismael and Bradley Lopez also scored for Brentwood (6-8) in a nonsection win.

Girls volleyball

Beaver 3, Laurel 0 – Kailyn Connelly had 18 kills, Aubrey Bumblis produced 15 digs and Zoe Ringer dealt out 22 assists as Beaver (11-3) swept Laurel (8-6) in a nonsection match.

Bentworth 3, Avella 0 – Olivia Telegraphis had 16 digs and Zoie McDonald had 14 assists to power Bentworth (7-7) to a sweep of Avella (1-11) in a nonsection match.

Jefferson-Morgan 3, Washington 0 – Lucca Jellots had 13 digs, Alisa Long followed with eight digs and Isabelle Bazzoli had nine kills to lead Jefferson-Morgan (6-8) to a nonsection win against Washington (1-10).

Mars 3, Avonworth 0 – Ella Nictora, Lily Javor, Rylee Wooldridge and Cecilia Christy combined for 42 kills and Gabi Weidermann handed out 37 assists as Mars (10-4) beat Avonworth (6-8) in nonsection play.

Field hockey

Penn-Trafford 5, Norwin 0 – Giuliana Youngo had two goals, Caeley Simon, Annabelle Carvajal and Sarah Ley also scored and Rilie Moors dished out two assists to lead Penn-Trafford (8-4) to a nonsection win over Norwin (3-8).

Hockey

Bishop Canevin 4, Trinity 3 – Jack Misterka had a goal and two assists while Brian Kalanish and Aidan Malay each added a goal and an assist for Bishop Canevin (1-0) in a Division 2 win. Destin Porter and Seamus Coyle each collected a goal and an assist for Trinity (1-2).

Bishop McCort 4, Norwin 2 – Braydon Persin and Kenny Billings each scored two goals, all in the third period, to lead Bishop McCort (1-1) to a Class 2A win. Jonah Andrykovitch and Parker Toth scored for Norwin (0-2).

Chartiers Valley 9, Montour 2 – Noah Callendar scored a pair of goals while Dylan Shamonsky and Joseph DeAngelis each added a goal for Chartiers Valley (3-0) in a rout of Montour (1-1) in Class A. Jackson Choery, Richie Francis, Austin Tornabene and Tyler Held each scored a goal for the Colts. Thomas Barefoot and Jack Koerbel scored for the Spartans.

Deer Lakes 10, Sewickley Academy 2 – Ryan Grunden scored six goals and had an assist while RJ Norkus and Austin Veri each scored a goal and had four assists as Deer Lakes (1-0) rolled to a Division 2 win over Sewickley Academy (0-2). Blake Toback and Mason Cervone each tacked on a goal for the Lancers. CJ Wright scored both goals for the Panthers.

Fox Chapel 6, Baldwin 4 – Dominic Casile scored the game-winning goal with 4:32 to play and added another with 1:47 left to lead Fox Chapel (1-0) to a Class 2A win. Pierce Osterholm scored the tying goal in the third period and Tucker Cullen added a pair of goals for Fox Chapel. Jeremy Pollard had two goals, Mack Dempsey added a goal and two assists and Logan Cramer had a goal and an assist for Baldwin (0-1-1).

Franklin Regional 2, Thomas Jefferson 1 – Brendan Yohe scored the first goal for Franklin Regional (1-0) and JJ Tensuan buried the game-winner with 2:45 left in the game as the Panthers edged Thomas Jefferson (0-1) in Class 3A. Liam Mahoney scored for the Jaguars.

Hampton 12, Richland 0 – Daniel Leyes scored five goals, Joey Stephenson added a goal and five assists, Dillon Fogle had two goals and two assists and Michael Cummings picked up a goal and three assists for Hampton (2-0) in a Class A win over Richland (0-1).

Indiana 4, West Allegheny 2 – Matt Stone and Gabe Nettleton scored third-period goals to lead Indiana (2-1) to a Class A win. Jackson Albert and Zdeno Dzuro also scored for Indiana. Austin Falick and Mason McGrath scored for West Allegheny (0-2).

Mars 5, Avonworth 2 – Ethan Da Silva, Ben Bowser, Jack Tirchm, Gavin Stevenson and Ethan Vactor each scored a goal as Mars (3-0) defeated Avonworth (1-1) in Class A. Conner Ralston and Cooper Powell were the goal scorers for the Antelopes.

Moon 5, North Hills 1 – Eric Hartman scored twice and Clayton Foster and Quin Tyler each had a goal and an assist for Moon (1-0) in a Class A win. Jonathan Trosky scored for North Hills (0-2).

Quaker Valley 3, Plum 1 – Charlie Pyle had a goal and an assist, Jace Vasbinder and Matthias Lezama also scored and Max Modrovich had two assists to lead Quaker Valley (2-0) to a Class A win. Tyler Bresso scored for Plum (0-2).

Ringgold 4, Neshannock 1 – Caden Doran scored twice and Landon Vaccaro and Matt Sylvester each had a goal and an assist for Ringgold (1-0) in a Division 2 victory. John Moniodes scored for Neshannock (0-1).

Shaler 6, Meadville 3 – Blake Whiteman had two goals and an assist, Jacob Skerlong added a goal and two assists and Darius Malecki and Brendan Fitzgerald each had a goal and an assist for Shaler (2-0) in a Class A win. Robert Mahoney scored twice and Graham Shellhaas had three assists for Meadville (0-2).

South Fayette 6, Central Catholic 5 (OT) – Robert Chiapetta scored his second goal of the game 22 seconds into overtime to lift South Fayette (1-1) to a Class 3A win. Mason Imler added two goals and an assist and Braydon Reighard and Dannol Hudson also scored for South Fayette. Aaron Daley had two goals and an assist and Noah Hritz and Judah Brophy each had a goal and two assists for Central Catholic (1-0-1).

Girls tennis

Ellwood City 3, Aquinas Academy 2 – Mia Meredith won in No. 3 singles and the pairings of Meredith McCommons/Olivia Parsons and Sohia Agnew/Kiley LeViere won in doubles as Ellwood City bested Aquinas Academy in the opening round of the Class 2A WPIAL team playoffs. The Wolverines will take on top seed North Catholic in the quarterfinals Tuesday.

Fox Chapel 5, Mars 0 – The Foxes won all five matches in straight sets in the first round of the WPIAL Class 3A playoffs. Sienna Siegel, Anna Kintner and Hannah Parker won singles matches and the teams of Eloise Johnson/Clara Drahnak and Meg Delaney/Grace Patel won doubles matches. Fox Chapel will meet Upper St. Clair in the quarterfinals Tuesday.

North Allegheny 5, Latrobe 0 – Mia Kaufman, Audrey Zheng and Kaitlyn Zeman won singles matches while teams of Cyntia Li/Alexa Richey and Remi Hayward/Kelly Tai won in doubles as North Allegheny swept Latrobe in the WPIAL Class 3A first round. The Tigers advance to play No. 2 Shady Side Academy in Wednesday’s quarterfinals.

Peters Township 3, Franklin Regional 2 – The Peters Township pairing of Adelaide Lulich and Abbie Segal won at No. 2 doubles to break a 2-2 tie in the first round of the WPIAL Class 3A playoffs. Keiran Moorhead won in first singles and Neve Zuzek took second singles for the Indians. Peters Township will face Bethel Park in the quarterfinals Wednesday.
