High school roundup for Oct. 8, 2024: Belle Vernon’s Trevor Kovatch sets school record with 100th goal

Trevor Kovatch’s game-winning goal in the second half was the 100th goal of his career, breaking the school record of 99 and leading Belle Vernon to a 2-1 victory over West Mifflin in Section 3-3A boys soccer Tuesday night.

Anthony Sawa also scored for the Leopards (7-7, 3-5). Greyson Black scored for West Mifflin (2-11, 2-7).

Allderdice 12, Uniontown 0 – Ethan Voight-Cherna scored five goals to lead Allderdice (9-3-1) to past Uniontown (2-11).

Beaver County Christian 2, Eden Christian 0 – Zach Stephens and Liam Birchler scored and Mike Lannigan preserved the shutout as Beaver County Christian (11-3, 7-2) clinched the Section 1-A title with a win over Eden Christian (7-5-2, 5-3-1).

Bentworth 3, Beth-Center 0 – Ryan Moessner scored twice and had an assist and Adam Moessner chipped in with a goal to lead Bentworth (13-0, 7-0) to a shutout win over Beth-Center (9-3-1, 4-3) in Section 2-A.

Bethel Park 1, Trinity 0 – Jackson Friday scored the winning goal and Luke Rubican recorded the shutout to lift Bethel Park (10-4, 10-2) to a Section 2-3A win over Trinity (8-5-2, 8-3-1).

Canon-McMillan 11, Connellsville 0 – Adam Kuchera had three goals and two assists, Gabe Fegely collected two goals and an assist, Gavin Patterson added a goal and two assists and Logan Joseph recorded the shutout for Canon-McMillan (9-4-1, 5-4) in a Section 2-4A win over Connellsville (2-13, 0-9).

Charleroi 9, Yough 3 – Blake Pendo scored a hat trick, Otis McIntyre deposited two goals and Landon Barcus, Dylan Klinger, Ethan Hartley and Adolf Noel each tallied a goal as Charleroi (13-0, 12-0) beat Yough (4-9-2, 4-6-2) in Section 4-2A.

Deer Lakes 16, Valley 2 – Artemey Parshyn had three goals and two assists and Collin Rodgers collected three goals and one assist to power Deer Lakes (13-2-1, 11-1) to a Section 1-2A victory. Peyton Kushon added two goals and two assists and Cameron Adams and Jack Alcorn also scored twice for the Lancers. Taimel Davis had a goal and an assist and Jackson Dameron also scored for Valley (1-13, 1-9).

East Allegheny 5, South Allegheny 0 – Colin Goldstein had two goals, Nicky Balana, Jordan Rondeau and Caden Savinda also scored and Dustin Harrier recorded the shutout for East Allegheny (4-10, 2-10) in a Section 3-2A win over South Allegheny (3-11, 2-9).

Elizabeth Forward 6, Steel Valley 0 – Jakub McKelvey, Ronald Chambers, Dominic Cavalier, Luca Valerio, Aidan Davis and Levi George each scored as Elizabeth Forward (11-3-1, 10-1-1) cruised to a Section 3-2A over Steel Valley (2-13, 2-10).

Freedom 4, South Side 0 – Nick Fessler recorded a hat trick and AJ Rhychorcewicz tallied a goal as Freedom (6-6-1, 5-3-1) beat South Side (2-12, 0-9) in Section 1-A.

Freeport 1, Highlands 0 – Angelo Porco scored the winning goal, with an assist from Eli Hassler, and Jacob Franks kept a clean sheet as Freeport (7-6-2, 4-5-2) beat Highlands (5-7-1, 4-7-1) in Section 1-2A.

Greensburg Central Catholic 11, California 2 – Grant Brewer recorded a hat trick and had four assists and Jackson Vacanti scored five goals to lead Greensburg Central Catholic (4-7-1, 4-3) to a Section 2-A win over California (1-7, 1-6). Niko Miller, Lucca Denis and Andrew McIntyre each added a goal for the Centurions.

Greensburg Salem 2, Derry 0 – Grady Rizzo scored both goals for Greensburg Salem (3-13, 2-10) in a Section 4-2A win over Derry (4-11, 3-9).

Hampton 2, Shaler 0 – Mason Hall and Xavier Ware scored a goal apiece for Hampton (9-2-3, 6-1-3) in a Section 1-3A win over Shaler (4-10-1, 3-7-1).

Moon 3, Montour 0 – Zech Balbach, Evan Thomas and Marc Haupt scored, Aedan Costa dished out three assists and Will Guarino preserved the shutout for Moon (15-0, 10-0) in a Section 4-3A win over Montour (8-8, 6-5).

Mt. Lebanon 2, Woodland Hills 0 – Jack O’Brien and Ignati Darakos scored to lead Mt. Lebanon (9-7, 4-5) to a Section 2-4A win over Woodland Hills (5-8, 2-7).

North Catholic 5, Burrell 1 – Gabe Nonino and Justin Garvey each had a goal and an assist and Arthur Mendonca, Matthew Liscinsky and Auatin English also scored for North Catholic (12-3, 10-2) in a Section 1-2A win over Burrell (6-9, 6-6).

Norwin 2, Penn Hills 0 – Ryan Schoemer and Daniel Maddock each scored a goal while Ryan Dooen kept a clean sheet as Norwin (10-4, 8-1) blanked Penn Hills (2-12, 0-8) in Section 1-4A.

OLSH 3, Carlynton 0 – Seth Therrien scored two goals and Isaac Tarbuck added another as OLSH (12-1, 9-0) blanked Carlynton (10-5, 6-3) to clinch the Section 3-A title.

Peters Township 2, Upper St. Clair 0 – Dante Pusateri and Brett Martin scored as Peters Township (13-1-1, 9-0) shut out Upper St. Clair (9-4-1, 7-2) to clinch the Section 2-4A title.

Pine-Richland 2, North Hills 1 – Brady Baker and Ryan Cashman scored to lift Pine-Richland (5-9, 3-6) past North Hills (10-5, 4-3) in Section 3-4A.

Plum 4, Hempfield 0 – Christian Alter and Bryce Bobich each had a goal and an assist, Fedgi Aristyl and Kent Holmes also scored and Brady McLaughlin, Chase Eber and Jack Majcher combined on a shutout for Plum (13-0-3, 9-0) in a Section 1-4A win over Hempfield (5-10, 2-7).

Riverview 2, Jeannette 0 – Devin Murphy scored twice, once on a penalty kick and once assisted by Liam Ulrich, and Quinn Fischer made four saves to record the shutout as Riverview (8-6, 4-5) beat Jeannette (2-11, 1-9) in Section 4-A.

Serra Catholic 1, Brentwood 0 – Will Friewald scored the only goal while Nate Loughner made 13 saves to preserve the shutout as Serra Catholic (4-11, 3-6) defeated Brentwood (6-9, 1-8) in Section 3-A.

Southmoreland 6, Brownsville 0 – Landon Delara and Ethan Kenney scored two goals apiece while Jack Smith and Andrew Kotecki each scored a goal as Southmoreland (10-6, 8-4) clinched a playoff spot with a Section 4-2A win over Brownsville (2-11-1, 2-9-1).

Thomas Jefferson 2, Ringgold 1 – Brayden Miller and Nate Rice scored for Thomas Jefferson (10-1-2, 9-1-2) in a Section 2-3A win. Zach Whaley scored for Ringgold (8-6-1, 7-4-1).

Waynesburg 1, Mt. Pleasant 0 – Dominic George scored the winning goal on a penalty kick and Dalton Taylor preserved the shutout for Waynesburg (5-7-1, 5-6-1) in a Section 4-2A victory over Mt. Pleasant (11-5, 10-2).

West Allegheny 2, Chartiers Valley 1 – Anthony Mimna and Milo Kent scored for West Allegheny (8-6, 7-3) in a Section 4-3A victory over Chartiers Valley (8-6, 7-3).

Girls volleyball

Beaver 3, New Castle 0 – Lanie Malobabich had 12 kills and Zoe Ringer dished out 24 assists to lead Beaver (12-3, 7-0) to a three-set sweep of New Castle (1-8, 1-6) in Section 4-3A. Kailyn Connelly had eight kills for the Bobcats.

Canon-McMillan 3, Peters Township 1 – Abby Tucker had 11 kills, Cali Dagen followed with 10 and Sophia Powell had 26 digs as Canon-McMillan (12-1, 7-0) beat Peters Township (10-3, 4-3) in Section 1-4A. Brooke Peters had 18 assists and Carsen Brown dished out 16 assists for the Big Macs.

Laurel Highlands 3, Albert Gallatin 2 – Ayrianna Sumpter had eight kills and Callie Friend added six kills and six blocks to lead Laurel Highlands (10-4, 7-2) to a Class 3-3A win. Sara Reed handed out 26 assists and Jayna Fabrey recorded 11 digs. Leah Myers had 15 kills, Mya Glisan added 11 kills and Mia Myers had 24 assists for Albert Gallatin (6-8, 3-7).

Mars 3, Highlands 0 – Cecilia Christy, Lily Javor, Rylee Wooldridge, Ella Nicotra and Hailey Duker combined for 47, Gabi Weidemann had 43 assists and Ella Nicotra served nine aces to lead Mars (11-4, 7-0) to a Section 2-3A win over Highlands (5-9, 1-6).

St. Joseph 3, Leechburg 0 – Kate Giannetta had 15 kills and seven aces, Veronica McCarthy had six kills and 12 digs and Jillian Bloch added 20 digs as St. Joseph (11-2, 7-0) swept Leechburg (4-8, 2-5) in Section 1-1A.

Hockey

Hempfield 6, Canon-McMillan 3 – JJ Williams scored twice and Ben Thompson and Nick Crupie each had a goal and an assist to lead Hempfield (1-1) to a Class 2A win. Carson O’Donoghue scored a pair of goals for Canon-McMillan (1-1).

North Catholic 6, Butler 0 – Anthony Nelly scored twice, Beckett Dunn had a goal and three assists and Wyatt Cleveland made 28 saves to lead North Catholic (1-1) to a Class A win over Butler (0-1-1). Ryder Gaff had a goal and two assists and Renzo Sylvester added a goal and an assist for North Catholic.

Penn-Trafford 6, Cathedral Prep 4 – Brock Bienemann had a five-point night with two goals and three assists and Penn-Trafford (2-0) topped Cathedral Prep (2-1) in Class 2A. Cam Kiste added a pair of goals and assists each for the Warriors.

Peters Township 7, North Allegheny 3 – Matthew Scouvart scored a pair of goals to lead Peters Township (1-1) to a Class 3A win against North Allegheny (1-2). Jacob Hlawati, Blake Evacic, Chay Lamagna, Cameron Caruso and John Ripepi each added a goal for Peters. William Kasunich, Marc Joyson and Cedric Otey scored for NA.

Wheeling Central Catholic 6, Greensburg Salem 1 – Braden Baker and Logan Pielech scored two goals apiece while Gary Hatfield and Zach Vitlip each tallied a goal for Wheeling Central Catholic (1-0) in a Class A win over Greensburg Salem (0-1). Jake Fink scored for the Lions.

Boys golf

WPIAL team tournament – Belle Vernon and Fox Chapel were the top-scoring teams at the Class 3A semifinals. Led by a 70 from Carson Kittsley, Fox Chapel topped the leaderboard with a 380 total at the Champion Lakes semifinal. North Allegheny and Plum also qualified for the WPIAL finals. Belle Vernon tied with West Allegheny with a 379 score at Indian Run. Seth Tomalski shot a 69 for the Leopards and Ethan Bobonski and Nico Ward shot 73 for West A. South Fayette also qualified. Defending WPIAL and PIAA champion Peters Township missed the cut by three strokes.

Quaker Valley, Shady Side Academy and Greensburg Central Catholic qualified at the Class 2A semifinal at Pleasant Valley. Ethan Dai shot a 71 to lead the Quakers. North Catholic, Elizabeth Forward and McGuffey advanced from the semifinal at The Links at Spring Church. Ben Kandravy shot 73 to lead the Trojans.

Girls tennis

Fox Chapel 3, Upper St. Clair 2 – Sienna Siegel defeated Catalina Ramirez in a three-set match at No. 1 singles to lead No. 5 Fox Chapel to a WPIAL Class 3A quarterfinal victory over No. 4 Upper St. Clair. Anna Kintner at No. 2 singles and the team of Eloise Johnson and Clara Drahnak at No. 1 doubles also won for the Foxes, who advance to Monday’s semifinals.

Indiana 3, Mt. Pleasant 2 – Eve Kuzneski and Gabby Sharp won singles matches and Sophiana Sidikou and Kate Mill won at No. 2 doubles to lead No. 10 Indiana to a Class 2A first-round win. Ryleigh Drzal won at No. 2 singles and Danica Trainer and Kiersten O’Connor won in three sets at No. 1 doubles for No. 7 Mt. Pleasant.

Quaker Valley 5, South Park 0 – The second-seeded Quakers dropped a total of six games in a Class 2A first-round sweep of No. 15 South Park. Winners were Kirsten Close, Avery Allan and Jay Olawaiye at singles and the teams of Livia Jobbins/Jane Lenhard and Parker Barnes/Kate Miller in doubles.
