High school roundup for Oct. 9, 2024: Quaker Valley beats Beaver to move into tie for section top spot

Annabel Miko and Ari Bosh scored to lead Quaker Valley to a 2-1 victory over Beaver in Section 3-2A girls soccer Wednesday. Sydney Chontos scored for the Bobcats.

The Quakers (12-2-1, 8-1) handed Beaver (12-1, 8-1) its first loss of the season and moved into a tie atop the section standings with one game to play. On Monday, Quaker Valley visits Avonworth and Beaver hosts Hopewell in the section finales.

Belle Vernon 10, Charleroi 0 – Ava Scalise had a hat trick, Grace West had a goal and four assists and Chessa Meetz and Sammy Mincone added two goals apiece to lead Belle Vernon (9-8, 8-4) to a Section 1-2A win over Charleroi (0-12, 0-11). Jordyn McDowell and Rudy Roberts also scored for the Leopards.

Bentworth 2, Chartiers-Houston 0 – Bella Moyer and Megan Keturakis scored and Nita Anderson preserved the shutout as Bentworth (14-1, 8-1) clinched at least a share of its fourth section championship in eight years with a Section 2-A win over Chartiers-Houston (9-4, 7-3).

Bethel Park 6, Blackhawk 0 – Grace Ferency had a hat trick as Bethel Park (8-5-3, 6-4-2) clinched a playoff spot with a Section 2-3A win over Blackhawk (5-10, 4-7).

Burrell 1, Shady Side Academy 0 – Miley Kariotis scored the winning goal, assisted by McKenna Miller, and Dana Barczykowski posted the shutout in goal as Burrell (11-3-1, 7-3) defeated Shady Side Academy (5-9-1, 3-5-1) in Section 2-2A.

Central Valley 1, Hopwell 1 (OT) – Aubrey Grater scored as Central Valley (6-7-1, 3-6-1) clinched a playoff berth in a draw with Hopewell (1-9-3, 1-6-2) in Section 3-2A.

Deer Lakes 1, Southmoreland 0 – Reese Waruszewski scored the winning goal and Mikayla Potter recorded the shutout for Deer Lakes (10-3-2, 8-2) in a Section 4-2A win over Southmoreland (9-7, 5-5).

Fox Chapel 4, Gateway 0 – Emily McKee scored a pair of goals, including the 50th of her career, to lead Fox Chapel (15-0-1, 10-0) past Gateway (5-8-1, 2-6-1) in Section 1-3A.

Franklin Regional 4, Elizabeth Forward 1 – Halle Beatty had a goal and an assist, Reese Phillips, Natalie Keough and Eden Williams also scored and Reilly Weaver had a pair of assists to lead Franklin Regional (11-5, 9-2) past Elizabeth Forward (4-7-2, 4-6-2) in Section 4-3A.

Freedom 5, Eden Christian 4 – Brianne Casto factored in on every goal, collecting three goals and two assists, to lead Freedom (7-5, 6-3) to a Section 1-A win over first-place Eden Christian (8-6-1, 7-2-1).

Freeport 4, Knoch 0 – Peyton Los, Addyson Kristofik, Elena Jenkins and Alyssa Cooper scored to help Freeport (11-1-1, 8-1-1) clinch the Section 2-2A title with a win over Knoch (3-12-1, 2-8). Alyssa Alcorn recorded the shutout for the Yellowjackets.

Greensburg Salem 4, West Mifflin 3 – Olivia Smith scored a hat trick and Lauryn Swierczynski added a goal as Greensburg Salem (6-9, 3-8) beat West Mifflin (3-11-1, 0-10-1) in Section 4-3A.

Hampton 1, Shaler 0 (OT) – Lexi Shane scored the winning goal in the fifth minute of the first overtime to lift Hampton (10-4-1, 5-4) past Shaler (7-7-1, 2-6-1) in Section 1-3A.

Latrobe 10, Hempfield 0 – Annalyse Bauer led Latrobe (7-4-1, 6-3) with four goals and two assists and Robin Reilly had a hat trick in a Section 1-4A win over Hempfield (5-11, 3-6). Emerson Shine, Geli Dent and Maddy Petruzzi also scored for the Wildcats.

Ligonier Valley 6, East Allegheny 1 – Leah McCall and Sophie Carns scored two goals apiece and Gabby Springer and Jana Smith added a goal each to lead Ligonier Valley (2-12, 1-8) to a Section 4-2A win. Sydney Nellis scored for East Allegheny (1-9, 0-9).

North Allegheny 3, Butler 0 – Kieran Shannon scored twice and Rosalia Varlotta also had a goal for North Allegheny (9-5-1, 5-2-1) in a Section 3-4A win over Butler (8-8, 2-6).

North Catholic 9, Valley 1 – Simone Sharpless scored four goals and Kathleen Virostek had a goal and two assists to lead North Catholic (12-2, 7-2) past Valley (1-11, 0-8) in Section 2-2A. Lauren Mealie, Frankie Liberati, Mikaela Canzan, Ally DeGlau and Marina Camino also scored for North Catholic.

Oakland Catholic 2, Laurel Highlands 1 – Emma Gompers scored her second goal of the game with 13 seconds left in the first overtime to carry Oakland Catholic (7-7, 6-4) to a Section 3-3A win over Laurel Highlands (7-7, 4-6).

Obama Academy 6, Carrick 0 – Brooklyn Potter had a hat trick, Jackie Johnson, Luna Mengine and Adjoa Dakwa also scored and Lucy Caroff and Orli Trumbal combined on the shutout in a nonsection win for Obama Academy (3-10-1).

Penn-Trafford 4, Armstrong 0 – Gabby Geary, Riley McIntosh, Lauryn Francis and Chloe Walton scored a goal apiece as Penn-Trafford (12-4, 9-1) clinched sole possession of the Section 1-4A title with a win over Armstrong (2-15, 1-9).

Peters Township 5, Baldwin 0 – Mandy Pirosko had a pair of goals for Peters Township (14-0-1, 9-0-1) in a Section 2-4A win over Baldwin (6-11, 3-7). Addie Pirosko, Milena Gill and Marina Hajnosz added a goal each for the Indians.

Pine-Richland 4, Allderdice 0 – Anna Amato had a hat trick, Lily Rosenwasser also scored and Shea Best recorded her seventh shutout as Pine-Richland (10-5) defeated Allderdice (4-9) in a nonsection game.

Plum 5, Indiana 0 – Mia Nardo had a hat trick, Emily Grubich and Hayden Wawrzyniak also scored and Makenna Anderson preserved the shutout for Plum (13-1, 11-0) in a Section 4-3A win over Indiana (4-9-2, 3-6-2).

Riverview 12, Highlands 0 – Isabel Chaparro led Riverview (9-3) with four goals, Cailey Trosch, Lyla Flanick and Alix Delsaut added two goals apiece and Madelyn Martino and Hannah Hudack also scored in a nonsection win over Highlands (1-6).

Seneca Valley 5, North Hills 0 – Maddie Marcotte netted four goals, Gianna Donatucci also scored and Abby Rombach posted the shutout in goal for Seneca Valley (12-2-2, 7-0-1) in a Section 3-4A win over North Hills (3-13, 0-8).

Serra Catholic 5, South Allegheny 0 – Bella Dumbroski scored four goals and Milena Poziviak added a goal to lead Serra Catholic (2-10, 1-9) to a Section 3-A win over South Allegheny (3-13, 1-10).

Seton LaSalle 4, Keystone Oaks 0 – Sydney Towers scored two goals and Angelina McGrath and Kennedy Bakota added a goal apiece to lead Seton LaSalle (11-2-2) to a nonsection win over Keystone Oaks (10-7).

South Park 10, McGuffey 0 – Brooke Paylo had a hat trick, Addison Kerr netted a pair of goals and Taylor Vargo, Emily Mihelcic, Mady Serechin, Ella Voyten and Alicia Riberich also scored to lead South Park (11-4-1, 11-0) past McGuffey (7-5-1, 5-5-1) in Section 1-2A.

Springdale 12, Jeannette 0 – Bri Ross scored five goals and Tessa Derringer had a hat trick to lead Springdale (12-1, 11-0) to a Section 4-A win over Jeannette (1-10, 0-10). Brooke Taliani had a goal and two assists, Ainsley Wade added a goal and an assist, Makenna Haas and Carissa Walsh also scored and Molly Hurley, Addie Richards and Kaitlyn Shock had two assists apiece.

Thomas Jefferson 8, Albert Gallatin 0 – Olivia Della Lucia scored a hat trick, Sami Maglicco added a pair of goals and Annmarie Graham, Nyla Kiral and Ali King combined on the shutout for Thomas Jefferson (9-5-1, 8-2) in a Section 3-3A win over Albert Gallatin (1-11, 1-9).

Upper St. Clair 1, Mt. Lebanon 0 – Abby Mascaro scored the lone goal for Upper St. Clair (9-5-2, 6-2-2) in a Section 2-4A win over Mt. Lebanon (9-6-1, 4-6).

Waynesburg 2, California 1 – Kolbi Rastoka and Emily Rafferty scored to lead Waynesburg (12-2, 8-2) past California (4-7-1, 3-5-1) in a Section 2-A win.

West Allegheny 3, Chartiers Valley 0 – Chloe Hart scored two goals and Mia McCarthy had another to lead West Allegheny (12-3-1, 9-2) past Chartiers Valley (1-11, 0-10) in a Section 2-3A win.

Winchester Thurston 3, Greensburg Central Catholic 0 – Marghe Memoli, Emily Tea and Jessie Kaufman scored for Winchester Thurston (9-5, 8-3) in a Section 4-A win over Greensburg Central Catholic (3-6, 3-6).

Boys soccer

Penn-Trafford 7, Uniontown 0 – Cooper Geyer and Chad Pusateri scored two goals apiece to lead Penn-Trafford (8-5-1, 5-4) to a Section 3-3A win over Uniontown (2-12, 0-9).

Field hockey

Penn-Trafford 3, Latrobe 0 – Liz Welsh had a pair of goals and Giuliana Youngo also scored as Penn-Trafford (9-4, 6-3) beat Latrobe (1-9, 1-9) in Class 2A.

Girls volleyball

Hampton 3, Knoch 0 – Marin Katona-Bock had 17 kills and 14 digs and Payton Galietti added 14 kills to lead Hampton (9-5, 5-3) past Knoch (7-7, 3-5) in Section 2-3A. Payton Galietti had 15 digs and Lilly Muczinski dished out 43 assists for the Talbots. Jess Farbacher had seven kills and 20 digs and Karlee Buterbaugh added seven kills for the Knights.

Girls tennis

Bethel Park 4, Peters Township 1 – Cami Fisher, Mackenzie Smock and Julia Gobbie won the singles matches in straight sets to lead No. 3 Bethel Park past No. 11 Peters Township in the WPIAL Class 3A quarterfinals. The teams split doubles with Bethel Park’s Cassie Sierka and Keira Ross and Peters Township’s Adelaide Lulich and Abbie Segal picking up wins.

In Monday’s semifinals, the Black Hawks will face No. 2 Shady Side Academy, a 5-0 winner over No. 7 North Allegheny on Wednesday. In the other half of the bracket, No. 1 Mt. Lebanon beat No. 8 Pine-Richland and will face No. 5 Fox Chapel in the semifinals.
