Upper St Clair and Peters Township are two of the most celebrated soccer programs in the WPIAL and every time the two squads do battle with each other, one can expect a classic. Monday night’s matchup at USC was no different as the Indians edged the Panthers 2-1.
After a bit of a feeling-out process in the early going, the Indians struck first in the 12th minute off of a corner kick. An accidental own goal was scored when the ball ricocheted off a USC defender into the net. The goal was credited to PT’s Brianne Latsko, and the Indians took a 1-nil lead.
The Indians took advantage of another corner opportunity in the 19th minute as the ball was headed by Regan Lavigna inside the 18-yard box to give the 5th-ranked PT squad a seemingly insurmountable 2-0 lead.
Throughout the game, the Panthers had the better of the chances with one would-be goal nullified by an offside call in the first half.
That, however, did not deter the Panthers. Their pressure and persistence eventually paid off as Rachel Witte fed leading scorer Maddy Rocks with a brilliant lead pass, and Rocks drilled a shot into the PT net to halve the Indians’ lead to 2-1.
USC kept coming, but PT’s defenders turned them away the rest of the way to preserve the victory. The Indians’ record now stands at 8-1 while this was the first loss of the year for the Panthers as they fall to 7-1 overall.
