It was Summer time in May. Sewickley Academy senior Summer Thorpe won both hurdles events at the WPIAL track and field championships Thursday at Baldwin High School.
Thorpe is a Notre Dame recruit who won the 100 hurdles in 14.58 seconds and the 300 in 43.86. Her 300 time set a new Class AA championship record. Thorpe had never won a WPIAL title before this year.
Thorpe was one of five girls who won two WPIAL titles in individual events, but another big story in the meet was the Robinson sisters. Hunter and Hayden Robinson attend Avonworth but compete under the name of Avonworth/Northgate because of a cooperative sponsorship.
Hayden is a freshman who won the 100, squeezing out a victory against her sister. Hayden won in 11.97 seconds while Hunter, a sophomore, finished second at 12.01.
But Hunter came back and won the 400 and set a Class AA championship meet record with a time of 56.54. Both Robinsons ran the 200. Hunter finished second at 24.54 seconds while Hayden was third at 25.34. Burrell’s Nikki Scherer won with a meet record time of 24.24.
The Robinsons both ran on the 1,600 relay team that finished first.
There were four other double winners in individual events. Quaker Valley’s Hannah Bablak won the Class AA 800 and 1,600 and set a record in the 800 with a time of 2:14.34.
Burrell’s Lizzie Weimer won both the Class AA shot put and discus.
The two other double winners were Butler’s Emily Horstman in the Class AAA 100 and 200, and Greensburg Salem’s Julia Howard in the Class AAA long jump and triple jump.
The state championship meet is next Friday and Saturday at Shippensburg University. In Class AAA, the top four finishers in each event qualify for the PIAA championships May 22-23 at Shippensburg University. Those who finish in fifth through eighth place must meet qualifying standards, which are in parentheses next to each event.
