Two new champions were crowned Friday afternoon at Moon High School at the 2016 WPIAL Girls Singles Tennis Championships. Maria Santilli of Norwin beat Marlo Schiffman of Upper St. Clair 6-3, 6-2 in a very competitive 3-A title match with many good rallies. Santilli, who was in command in both sets, controlled play from the baseline and showed a lot of emotion in the straight set victory. Schiffman, only a freshman, will be in contention for WPIAL gold the next three years. in the Class 2-A Finals, Katherine Marks of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart knocked off Elle Santora of Knoch 6-3, 6-1. Top-seed Marks trailed 2-1 early in first set, but then won 10 straight games at one point. Marks mentioned afterward she found the match difficult to play because of her close friendship with Santora.
In the two consolation matches, Bethany Yauch of Baldwin won over Isabelle Paixao of Montour 6-2, 6-1. Yauch only a freshman, played really consistent, excellent tennis to advance to the states in Class 3-A. in the 2-A consolation match, it was a battle of Bobcats teammates as Anne Taylor of Beaver edged Moriah Bridges of Beaver 6-4, 6-3.
