Callie Frey of Mount Lebanon & Samantha Gohh of Sewickley Academy Claim WPIAL Gold

The comeback kids became the golden girls Thursday afternoon in the 2013 WPIAL Girls Singles Tennis Championships as Callie Frey of Mount Lebanon won her second straight Class AAA crown while Samantha Gohh of Sewickley Academy won Class AA gold at North Allegheny High School.

WPIAL Class AAA Championship: Callie Frey d. Marlys Bridgham 3-6, 6-1, 6-2. 

Mt. Lebanon's tennis sensation is golden again. Callie Frey, who won the 2012 WPIAL AAA Girls Singles Tennis Championship before losing in the PIAA Finals, rallied from an early deficit to defeat Pine-Richland's Marlys Bridgham 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 on Thursday afternoon at North Allegheny High School. Frey, who is ranked 5th in Pennsylvania in her age group and 6th by the USTA for the Middle States region, had to overcome a bigger and more powerful Bridgham the entire way. Frey has three silver medals in PIAA competition, with two coming in doubles competition and last year's runner-up showing in the singles tournament. She is one of the most decorated WPIAL tennis players in recent history, with two gold medals, four section titles and multiple achievements in doubles play. Bridgham, a five-star Dayton recruit, appeared to battle an injury to her left hand for the third set. Both competitors will move to the PIAA playoffs. 

WPIAL Class AA Championship: Samantha Gohh d. Sydney Miggantz 3-6, 6-0, 6-3.

Much like the AAA Championship match, the AA match required its winner to overcome an early deficit against an opponent battling injury. However, the biggest difference between the two matches is that the AA featured a pair of teammates battling for the second title in a matter of days. Sewickley Senior Samantha Gohh won the AA Section 6 Championship after teammate Sydney Miggantz retired during the match due to an ankle injury. Miggantz, a Junior, rested and played well enough to reach the WPIAL AA Championship game and, after a strong first game, appeared the better of the two competitors. But as the match wore on, Miggantz began to wear down and Gohh took advantage. The Senior began to to make her younger teamate run on an injured ankle, frustrating Miggantz who, despite battling in the final set, was not able to overcome. Both ladies will advance to the PIAA playoffs and be joined by Alyvia Kluska, who won the AA Consolation via forfeit by her younger sister Michaela.
