WPIAL Boys Basketball Postseason Clinchings and Playoff Picture

82 WPIAL boys basketball teams have reached one of their goals in making the district postseason. Now next up on the chalkboard wish list…a WPIAL golden basketball. Section play in the regular season has come to an end and the focus now switches to the 'Battle to the Bluff' and the 2012 WPIAL Boys Basketball Playoffs. Here is a rundown of the teams from each section in all four classifications that are playoff bound.

CLASS AAAA – Set With 17 Teams Clinched

CLASS AAAA SECTION 1:

Hempfield, (12-2), Penn-Trafford (12-2), Kiski Area (11-3) and Norwin (7-7) have all clinched playoff spots. 

CLASS AAAA SECTION 2:

Woodland Hills (10-2), Gateway (8-4), Plum (8-4), and McKeesport (7-5) have all clinched playoff spots.

CLASS AAAA SECTION 3:

Shaler (11-1), North Allegheny (8-4), Butler (6-6), Pittsburgh Central Catholic (6-6) and Seneca Valley (6-6) have all clinched playoff spots. 
(Seneca Valley, Central Catholic and Butler tied for third place. Central Catholic split with Seneca Valley and swept Butler, which would give them a 3-1 record head-to-head and give them third place. Going back to head-to-head to break the fourth place tie between Seneca Valley and Butler, they split in their two meetings, thus both teams would qualify for the playoffs.)

CLASS AAAA SECTION 4:

Chartiers Valley (13-1), Mount Lebanon (12-2), Bethel Park (9-5) and Peters Township (7-7) have all clinched playoff spots. 

CLASS AAA – Set With 23 Teams Clinched

CLASS AAA SECTION 1:

Hampton (14-0), Mars (11-3) Knoch (8-6), Highlands (6-8) and Kittanning (6-8) have all clinched playoff spots. 

CLASS AAA SECTION 2:

New Castle (12-0), Blackhawk (8-4), Central Valley (8-4) and Beaver (7-5) have all clinched playoff spots.

CLASS AAA SECTION 3:

Greensburg-Salem (9-3), Uniontown (9-3), Indiana (8-4) and Southmoreland (8-4) have all clinched playoff spots.

CLASS AAA SECTION 4:

Keystone Oaks (12-0), Thomas Jefferson (9-3), West Mifflin (9-3), Elizabeth Forward (5-6) and South Park (5-6) have all clinched playoff spots. 

CLASS AAA SECTION 5:

Montour (12-0), South Fayette (10-2), McGuffey (6-6), Trinity (6-6) and Washington (6-6) have clinched playoff spots. 
(McGuffey, Trinity and Washington all split in head-to-head against each team and thus all three end up tied for thirdplace and qualify for the playoffs.)

CLASS AA – Set With 26 Teams Clinched

CLASS AA SECTION 1:

Shady Side Academy (11-1), Ford City (7-5), West Shamokin (7-5) , Freeport (6-6) and Riverview (6-6) have all clinched playoff spots. 

CLASS AA SECTION 2:

Summit Academy (11-1), Shenango (9-3), Riverside (8-4) and Neshannock (6-6) have all clinched playoff spots. 

CLASS AA SECTION 3:

Monessen (12-0), Wilkinsburg (9-3), Brentwood (6-6) and Seton-LaSalle (6-6) have all clinched playoff spots. 

CLASS AA SECTION 4:

Greensburg Central Catholic (11-1), Frazier (9-3) Jeannette (9-3), Brownsville (5-7) and California (5-7) have all clinched playoff spots. 

CLASS AA SECTION 5:

Sto-Rox (10-0), Chartiers-Houston (6-4), Fort Cherry (5-5) and South Side (5-5) have all clinched playoff spots.  

CLASS AA SECTION 6:

Beaver Falls (11-1), Quaker Valley (10-2), Northgate (7-5) and Aliquippa (6-6) have all clinched playoff spots. 

CLASS A – Set With 16 Teams Clinched

CLASS A SECTION 1:

Lincoln Park (10-0), Cornell (7-3), Union (5-5) and Western Beaver (4-6) have clinched playoff spots.
(Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (4-6) is eliminated because they lost both games in the head-to-head tiebreaker with Western Beaver.)

CLASS A SECTION 2:

North Catholic (12-0), Vincentian Academy (10-2), Sewickley Academy (8-4) and Quigley (5-7) have all clinched playoff spots. 

CLASS A SECTION 3:

Bentworth (10-0), Avella (7-3), Carmichaels (5-5) and Jefferson-Morgan (5-5) have all clinched playoff spots. 

CLASS A SECTION 4:

Clairton (9-1), Serra Catholic (9-1), St. Joseph (6-4) and Geibel Catholic (4-6)  have all clinched playoff spots.
