A big second week of the WPIAL football season has come and gone. As expected, early season match ups with plenty of fanfare that did not disappoint. Here's a look back at the top games that lived up to their billing in our Week Two episode of Plays of the Week.
#3 – Class A:
Monessen Greyhounds 35 – Brentwood Spartans 28
An early showdown in the Black Hills Conference certainly did not disappoint. With plenty of tension that carried over from the basketball hardwood to the gridiron, the Spartans and Greyhounds locked horns as big plays ping-ponged back and forth throughout the night before the biggest one of them all helped Monessen secure win. Tied at 21, with Brentwood seemingly taking control of the game, the Spartans had their momentum thwarted with a pivotal play that reversed field (literally) for the Greyhounds. Monessen's Brandon Lenhart intercepted Chris Shortley's pass and returned it 41 yards for a touchdown. Monessen would use that top play to create the momentum to add one more score and sail to the conference win.
#2 – Class AAA:
Montour Spartans 28 – Central Valley Warriors 27
Thursday night football is back in the WPIAL, and while the rest of the schedule will provide solid matchups, there may not have been none better the Spartans and Warriors. Trailing the game 14-0, the Spartans came roaring back to knot the score at 21 and force overtime. While the Spartans eventually pulled away with the victory in OT, it was quarterback's Tynen Greer, score on a 4-yard run coupled with a Nate Dearth kick with 32 seconds remaining of regulation as the top play.
#1 – Class AA:
Freeport Yellowjackets 19 – Ford City Sabers 14
One of the Allegheny conference's best rivalries squared off early this year as the Yellow Jackets and Sabers remained stalled in a defensive struggle. Trailing late in the fourth quarter, running back Damon Smith was able to leap from 1 yard out with 11 seconds left to score the game-winning touchdown for Freeport. Smith had a gritty 61 yards on 15 carries for Smith in this game until his final one proved to be this game's top play.
