Virginia Wins 2010 PONY League World Series

Ten of the top baseball teams from around the world made their way to Washington, Pennsylvania this past week to play in the 2010 PONY League World Series. When the dust had settled, Chesterfield County, Virginia was crowned champion. You can listen to every game broadcast by WJPA-AM now archived here on the MSA Sports Network. Here are the recaps of each game played at Lew Hays PONY Field in Washington.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 14th – CHAMPIONSHIP GAME:
CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VIRGINIA 3 – WEST TOKYO, JAPAN 1:
Michael Day tossed a four-hit complete game, and Phillip van Kueren went back-to-back with Ryan Hall, leading Chesterfield County, VA to their first-ever PONY League World Series championship, beating West Tokyo, 3-1 Saturday afternoon. Day allowed two walks and two hits in the
first, then settled into a winning rhythm, allowing just a double in the fourth, a single in the fifth the rest of the way. Day retired 8 of the last nine West Tokyo batters to close the game. Meanwhile, the East Zone champions were tying the game in the second on a rbi groundout by Brad
McKay, then getting the homeruns in the third for the winning margin. Day won the Easton Bat Company ERA award, allowing just one earned run over 10 innings of work (0.70 ERA). Hall won the Wilson Sporting Goods Batting Title, hitting .611 over the five games, stroking three homeruns, two triples, three doubles and three singles while driving in 11 runs.

FRIDAY, AUGUST 13th:
WEST TOKYO, JAPAN 5 – BAYAMON, PUERTO RICO 4:
Wataru Okamoto allowed just two hits and Kohei Toyoda
drove in three runs as West Tokyo, Japan earned a spot in the PONY League World Series championship game with a 5-4 win over Bayamon, PR Friday evening. The Asia-Pacific champions scored three times in the first, Toyoda driving in a pair with a single, chasing starter Christian Padin. Bayamon took a 4-3 lead in the second as Okamoto allowed four walks and two hits. In the top of the third, West Tokyo used a single by Takeru Kikuchi, an Okamoto double, a Toyoda groundout and a wild pitch to close the scoring. Neither team had another hit. Bayamon didn't have another baserunner until a leadoff walk in the seventh. Roy Morales took the loss in relief, despite allowing just two runs and three hits over 6.2 innings. West Tokyo faces Chesterfield
County, VA in Saturday's championship game.

THURSDAY, AUGUST 12th:

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VIRGINIA 7 – CORONA, CALIFORNIA 2:
Hunter Williams allowed just two runs and five hits in a complete-game effort, leading Chesterfield County, VA to a 7-2 win over Corona, CA in the Division Finals at the PONY League World Series. The East Zone champions scored three times in the first off losing pitcher Gary Fayard who walked the first three batters. The game stayed 3-0 with the help of a triple play in the fifth, just the fourth ever in World Series history. With runners at first and second, Shane Mardirosian lined out to first baseman Jordan Staib who stepped on the bag then threw across the diamond to get the lead runner attempting to tag and advance. Chesterfield added two runs in the bottom of the inning, getting three straight two-out singles. Doubles by Brad McKay, Phillip Van kueren and Ryan Hall brought two more across in the Virginia sixth inning. Corona got on the board with three singles in the final inning, but lost to Chesterfield for the second time in the tournament. Chesterfield County advances to Saturday's World Series final and will face the West Tokyo / Bayamon winner.

BAYAMON, PUERTO RICO 15 – WEST TOKYO, JAPAN 5:
Winning pitcher Xavier Serrano hit two homeruns, had three rbi's and held West Tokyo to one earned run over 4.2 innings, leading Bayamon, PR past the Asia-Pacific champions, 15-5, Thursday night at the PONY League World Series. The win forces an "If Necessary" game in this division Friday night. Roy Morales drove in five runs, including a solo homerun in the first. Eduardo Jimenez added a three-run shot in the fourth. Geraldo Feliciano had a solo homer in the fifth inning for the Caribbean champs. West Tokyo had six hits in the game, all singles. Starter Takeru Kikuchi (1-1) took the loss, allowing six runs in 3.1 innings.

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 11th:

CORONA, CALIFORNIA 17 – WASHINGTON, PENNSYLVANIA 3:
Corona, CA left no doubt, pushing across multiple runs in every inning on the way to a 17-3 drubbing of the host Washington squad in an elimination game. The West Zone champions got two-run homeruns from Kyle Hatton and Brody Charron, solo shots from Gary Fayard and Robert Webber to power into Thursday's Division Final against Chesterfield County, VA. Corona will have to twice avenge the Sunday loss to the East Zone champions to qualify for Saturday's World Series title game. Washington's Zack Kenny homered, his third of the World Series. The Voytek Award given for the team's highest batting average in the World Series, went to Mason Tillery for his 5-for-10 performance at Lew Hays PONY Field.

BAYAMON, PUERTO RICO 12 – BAY COUNTY, MICHIGAN 6:
Seven extra-base hits, three by Steven Gomez, powered Bayamon, PR past Bay County, MI, 12-6, Wednesday night. Gomez had two doubles, a homerun-his second of the Series, and three rbi to lead the attack. Roy Morales doubled twice among his three hits. Winning pitcher Gabriel Rivera had a solo homerun in a six-run first inning for the Caribbean champions. Bay County had taken a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, and battled back to within 6-5 before Bayamon pulled away with five runs over the last two frames. Bayamon advances to the Division Finals Thursday night against West Tokyo, needing to beat the Asia-Pacific champs twice to make the World Series final.

TUESDAY, AUGUST 10th:

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VIRGINIA 18 – WASHINGTON, PENNSYLVANIA 6:
The East Zone champs became the first team to three wins with an impressive 18-6, 5-inning victory over Washington Tuesday night at the PONY League World Series. Chesterfield County, VA scored three times in the first, four more in the second before Washington got a baserunner. Ryan Hall led the way with five rbi, five runs scored and four hits, including his second home run and a record-tying second triple. Hunter Williams helped himself to the win, driving in four runs, while holding the Host team to just one hit over the first two innings. Chesterfield County moves to the Division Finals Thursday night. Washington drops into Wednesday's elimination game against Corona, CA. The hosts got a solo homerun from Mason Tillery.

CORONA, CALIFORNIA 13 – MEDINA VALLEY, TEXAS 1:
The West Zone champions banged out 17 hits to oust Medina Valley, TX, 13-1. With Corona leading 2-1, the South Zone champs loaded the bases with nobody out in the second, and again with one out in the third, and failed to score. Corona blasted through the opening, banging out four doubles in the fourth, scoring three runs. Josh Morgan's fourth double of the game, an all-time World Series record, drove in two runs in the sixth and erased any lingering doubt of the outcome. Shane Mardirosian went the distance for the win, allowing six hits while striking out 14 batters. He also had a triple and a double among his three hits. Robert Webber homered for Corona, the 1,100th homerun in the 59-year history of the tournament. Corona will next face the Washington / Chesterfield County loser in Wednesday's elimination game.

MONDAY, AUGUST 9th:

WEST TOKYO, JAPAN 10 – BAY COUNTY, MICHIGAN 0:
After being set down in order the first two innings, West Tokyo erupted for 10 runs over the next three frames on the way to a 10-0, 5-inning victory over Bay County, MI, Monday night at the PONY League World Series. West Tokyo's 5-6-8 hitters, Shohei Sato, Takeru Kikuchi and Kazunori Nakazato each had two hits in the game. Yamato Akiba and Ryusei Harada, the 7 & 9 hitters, each drove in a pair of runs. Yasuyuki Seki got the win, moving the Asia-Pacific into Thursday's Division Finals. Bay County starter Scott Badour took the loss. The North Zone champions face Bayamon in Wednesday's elimination game.

BAYAMON, PUERTO RICO 3 – HERMOSILLO, MEXICO 2:
Eduardo Jimenez stroked a two-out triple to center, scoring Roy Morales from first as Bayamon, PR eliminated Hermosillo, MX, 3-2, Monday night at the PONY League World Series. The triple was Jimenez' third hit of the night for the Caribbean champions, winners over the Mexico champs for a second time in the Series. Morales was the winning pitcher, tossing a shutout top of the seventh inning after Hermosillo's Julian Leon tied the game in the sixth with a solo homerun. Jesus Durazo took the loss. Bayamon will face the loser of the Bay County/West Tokyo game in a Wednesday night elimination game.

SUNDAY, AUGUST 8th:

MEDINA VALLEY, TEXAS 13 – MON-YOUGH, PENNSYLVANIA 3:
Jonathan Groff hit a grand slam and drove in six runs, leading Medina Valley, TX to a 13-3 win over Mon Yough, PA in a PONY League World Series elimination game Sunday night. Groff had a two-run double in the third before hitting the grand slam in the 6th, closing out the South Zone champions' scoring. Quinn Petty homered in the Medina Valley fourth inning. Nathan Stein went the distance, allowing just three runs on four hits, including a solo homerun for Zack Craven, his second of the World Series. Groff's grand slam was the third of the day, just the 35th all-time in teh PONY League World Series. Medina Valley faces Corona, CA in an elimination game on Tuesday.

HERMOSILLO, MEXICO 7 – JOHNSTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA 4:
Cesar Salazar's sixth-inning grand slam gave Hermosillo, MX a 7-4 win over Johnstown,PA, eliminating the Host Area North champions from the PONY League World Series. The grand slam was the second of the day, and the 34th in the history of the PONY League World Series. Johnstown had taken a 4-1 lead in the third, getting a three-run homer from Tyler Crawford, before the Mexico champions scored twice in the fifth to pull within a run. Hector Garcia got the win, allowing four runs and five hits over six innings. Brad Coleman took the loss, his second of the World Series. The victory is the first World Series win for a team from Mexico since a 1979 quarterfinals win over Garden City, CA. Hermosillo now faces Bayamon, PR Monday night in an elimination game.

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VIRGINIA 6 – CORONA, CALIFORNIA 5:
Michael Flanagan stroked a pinch-hit grand slam in the bottom of the sixth, powering Chesterfield County, VA to come-from-behind, 6-5 win over Corona, CA, Sunday afternoon at the PONY League World Series. Corona built a 5-0 lead after three innings, plating four in the third on five hits. But reliever Michael Day slammed the door, holding the West Zone champions to just one hit over the next three innings while the CBC bats chipped away. Then, with the bases loaded and nobody out, Flanagan entered the game and drilled the 33rd grand slam in World Series history. Day got the win, Hunter Williams pitched the seventh to earn a save. Chesterfield County now faces Washington Tuesday night. Corona drops into Tuesday evenings' elimination game.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 7th

WEST TOKYO, JAPAN 11 – BAYAMON, PUERTO RICO 3:
Shohei Sato drove homered and drove in five runs as West Tokyo, Japan won their PONY League World Series opener, beating Bayamon, PR, 11-3. The Asia-Pacific champions trailed 2-1 going into the third, but scored five times, including two on Sato's single. Takeru Kikuchi got the win, striking out 11 batters and holding Bayamon to just five hits, moving West Tokyo into Monday's Winners' Bracket final against Bay County, MI. Bayamon drops into
the Losers' Bracket game Monday.

WASHINGTON, PENNSYLVANIA 10 – MON-YOUGH, PENNSYLVANIA 4:
Zack Kenny hit two homeruns and drove in six runs to lead the offense, and Steven Iams took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, leading Washington, PA to a 10-4 win over Mon Yough, PA Saturday evening at the PONY League World
Series. Washington Kenny's first homerun, a 2-run blast oin the sixth put the Hosts up 5-0, and his second closed the scoring in the seventh. Mon Yough got a three-run homer from Zack Craven, pulling to within 5-4 after six. Washington is off until Tuesday night's Winners' Bracket final. Mon Yough tries to stave off elimination Sunday night against Medina Valley, TX.

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VIRGINIA 13 – MEDINA VALLEY, TEXAS 1:
Chesterfield Co., VA pounded out a dozen 2-out hits on the way to a 13-1, 5-inning win over Medina Valley, TX Saturday afternoon at the PONY League World Series. Ryan Hall led the way with three extra-base hits and four rbi.
Hall was a single shy of the cycle. The East Zone champions broke open a 2-1 game with seven runs in the fourth, all scoring with two outs. Medina Valley had just two baserunners after the second inning as Hunter Williams and Michael Flanagan combined on a two-hitter. Chesterfield County faces West Zone champion Corona, CA Sunday afternoon. Medina Valley drops into a Sunday night elimination game.

FRIDAY, AUGUST 6th:

BAYAMON, PUERTO RICO 2 – HERMOSILLO, MEXICO 0:
Steven Gomez homered on the first pitch he saw in the game, giving Bayamon, Puerto Rico, a 2-0 win over Hermosillo, Mexico in the opening game of the PONY League World Series. Felipe Rivera singled with two out in the second before Gomez' drive. Eduardo Jimenez made it stand up, tossing a four-hit shutout, striking out 14 batters. The Caribbean champions had just four hits after the homerun, all singles. All four Hermosillo hits were singles. Bayamon advances in the winners' bracket to face West Tokyo, Japan, Saturday evening. Hermosillo drops into the losers' bracket Sunday evening against the loser of Bay County, MI and Johnstown, PA.

BAY COUNTY, MICHIGAN 5 – JOHNSTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA 4:
Trailing 4-0 in the first, Bay County, MI got a solo homerun from Hayden Clements on the way back to a 5-4 win over Johnstown, PA at the PONY League World Series Friday night. The North Zone champs added single runs in the third and fourth to get to within 4-3. In the top of the sixth, two Johnstown errors opened the door, enabling Bay County to plate two runs and win just their second World Series game ever. Johnstown got six hits in the first eight batters but didn't get another the rest of the way. Brett Adcock got the win in relief, working the final four innings, allowing three walks and striking out nine. Bay County moves to the Winners' bracket game Monday night. Johnstown faces Hermosillo, MX in Sunday's elimination
contest.
