District College Football Recap for Saturday, September 4th

College Football is underway throughout the Western Pennsylvania area. Each Saturday MSA Sports will have scores and recaps of every game. Here are the recaps from all of Saturday's action:

Geneva 32 – Frostburg State 27

Gerald Muschette started off the 2010 season on a high note, rushing for 181 yards on 27 carries and three touchdowns as the Golden Tornados win in Maryland.

Muschette opened the scoring in the first quarter with a 12 yard run, set up when Anton Wade fumbled at his own 15, Geneva linebacker Chance Kelosky recovered. Frostburg State scored on a short field as well, Matt Rose fumbled a punt at the Geneva 18, Josh Volpe hit Anthony Young for a five yard touchdown five plays later to tie the game. Nick DiPietro kicked a 28 yard field goal to give Geneva back the lead with 8:18 remaining in the first half.

Again, Geneva took advantage of a turnover, Anthony King had the ball knocked loose by Dan Dillman, Matt Curry recovered at the FSU 30, setting up a Muschette seven yard touchdown. King made up for the fumble by scoring from six yards, the drive was helped by a personal foul penalty against Geneva. David Girardi was intercepted by Terryl Monroe late in the half, Monroe's 62 yard return deep into Geneva territory was negated by a illegal block in the back.

In the third quarter, Geneva extended the lead. Girardi hit Corey O'Patchen for 59 yards down to the five, Pat Matty scored from one yard out to push the lead to ten. Frostburg State scored with 3:04 left in the third, King scored his second touchdown of the night on a one yard run, but Chris Karolenko's extra point was blocked, Fred Maxell picked up the ball and went the other way for a defensive conversion to make it 26-20.

Geneva added to the lead in the fourth quarter, going 95 yards in ten plays, Muschette capped a ten play 95 yard run with his third of the night, this time from two yards. Volpe scored on a two-yard touchdown with 1:50 remaining, but FSU could get no closer.

Penn State 44 – Youngstown State 14
YSU led 7-3 but it was the 19th ranked Nittany Lions and freshman quarterback Rob Bolden with the win in Happy Valley. Bolden threw for 239 yards and two touchdowns in the win. Chaz Powell returned the second half kickoff 100 yards to the house. Redshirt freshman Kurt Hess played well for the Penguins, going 21 of 25 for 189 yards and two touchdowns. Dominque Barnes had 11 catches for 137 yards including an 80 touchdown off a screen pass. Penn State starts 1-0, they head to Alabama next Saturday. YSU falls to 0-1, the Penguins host Butler at the Ice Castle, kickoff is 6 pm.

Liberty 52 – St. Francis (Pa) 7
Kyle Harbridge ran for a 39 yard first quarter touchdown for a 7-0 Red Flash lead, but that was it for St. Francis. Liberty put up 599 yards of offense, including 338 yards and four touchdown passes for Mike Brown. St. Francis will travel to Morehead State next Saturday. Liberty will travel to Ball State.

Dayton 28 – Robert Morris 14
Steve Valentino had 317 total yards of offense, including two touchdown passes as the Flyers held the ball for over 37 minutes in the home win. Justin Watkins had eight catches for 95 yards for Dayton. Jeff Sinclair threw for only 146 yards, but did hit Anthony Coleman with a 33 yard strike. Sinclair added a one yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter. Robert Morris had 119 yards in penalties on the afternoon. Robert Morris will open NEC play next Saturday at Sacred Heart. Dayton is at Duquesne next week with a 6 pm kickoff at Rooney Field.

Duquesne 17 – Bucknell 13
Sean Patterson threw a touchdown pass to Dave Williams and ran for another score as the Dukes open the season with the win on the Bluff. Tyler Smith had an 89 yard kickoff return for the Bison's only touchdown. Larry McCoy carried 20 times for 81 yards to lead the Duquesne rushing attack. Senior linebacker Nathan Totino made 13 tackles for the Dukes. Duquesne hosts Dayton next week, Bucknell is at Marist next Saturday night.

VMI 48 – Lock Haven 6
The Keydets racked up 304 yards thru the air to knock off the Bald Eagles. Julian Bowers scored two rushing touchdowns for VMI. Lock Haven suffered their 22nd consecutive loss. Jarred Burkett hit Eddie Celkos for a 20 yard touchdown pass with 16 seconds left in the first half. VMI is at William & Mary next week. Lock Haven travels to Millersville in a PSAC crossover game.

California 42 – Saginaw Valley State 41 in overtime
In a battle of nationally ranked powers, the Vulcans rallied from a 21-3 second quarter deficit to pick up the road win. Both teams scored in the first overtime, but Saginaw Valley State kicker Austin Borchard missed the extra point to give Cal the win. Saginaw Valley State led 14-0 after one on touchdown runs from Charles Dowdell of 30 yards and a 9 yarder from Brandon Hayes. Cal got on the board with a 19 yard field goal from Marc Domokos, but Dowdell capped a nine play drive with a 14 yard pass to Nick Gallina. Josh Portis tossed his first touchdown pass of the season with 1:03 remaining in the half, five yards to Cody Wilson. The Vulcans took the lead in the third quarter 24-21 on a Lamont Smith one yard run, Chedrick Cherry added a 17 yard scamper for the lead. Dowdell got his second rushing touchdown, a 54 yarder to give Saginaw Valley State a 28-24 lead after three. Dowdell notched his second touchdown pass, a 30 yarder to Gallina with 11:37 remaining in regulation, putting SVS up 35-24. Domonkos kicked a 29 yarder to cut the deficit to eight, with 6:24 left, Portis found Cherry for a 22 yard touchdown, he also hooked up with Cherry on the two-pointer to tie the game. Cal had the ball first in the overtime, Portis hit Terrance Moore with a five yard touchdown pass, capping an 11 play drive. Ronnie Lark scored from four yards out for Saginaw Valley State, but could not convert the extra point. For the fifth-ranked Vulcans, Portis went 20 for 34 for 203 yards and three touchdowns, he was sacked five times. Dowdell had a wonderful game for the 11th ranked Cardinals, rushing for 102 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries, he threw for 261 yards on 22 of 36 and two touchdowns. Dowdell was intercepted three times. Cal will meet PSAC-East foe C.W. Post in New York next Saturday, it will be the first meeting ever between the two schools.

Edinboro 20 – West Liberty 19
The Fighting Scots may have worked themselves into the Division II rankings, knocking off the 7th ranked Hilltoppers in West Virginia. The last time the teams met, the scoreboard needed to be replaced after the game, a 84-63 win for West Liberty in the first round of the NCAA playoffs. West Liberty jumped out to a 19-6 halftime lead. Quarterback Zack Amedro was 23 of 28 for 235 yards in the first thirty minutes and two touchdown passes. Cody Harris scored on a one yard run for his first career touchdown. In the second half, Harris would have the big play for the Fighting Scots, going 55 yards to the four yard line. Drew Harrell went in three plays later from a yard out to cut the lead to 19-14. Harris threw a touchdown pass to D'Mar Jeter, a seven yarder, the two pointer was no good, Edinboro led 20-19 with 7:16 remaining. James Jackson would pick off Amedro at the Edinboro five with 79 seconds left to seal the win. Amedro ended up 35 of 52 for 330 yards, he was picked off twice and sacked three times. Ryan Travis had 12 catches for 76 yards and a touchdown for West Liberty. Edinboro heads to West Chester next Saturday.

IUP 16 – Southern Connecticut State 6
Harvie Tuck rushed for 98 on 28 carries and Craig Burgess kicked three field goals as IUP picked up the home win. Defense was key for IUP, they picked off three Kevin Lynch passes. Roy-al Edwards ran for a 34 yard touchdown for IUP. Rashaad Slowley scored on a two yard run for the Owls. IUP heads to East Stroudsburg next week for a PSAC crossover matchup. SCSU hosts West Liberty next Saturday.

New Haven 34 – Seton Hill 17
Louisville transfer Ryan Osiecki threw for 311 yards and four touchdowns to hand the Griffins their first loss of the season. Osiecki was 22 of 39, he hit Sharieff Hall nine times for 118 yards and two scores. Seton Hill quarterback D.J. Lenehan was 25 of 45 for , but he was picked off three times by Desmond Anderson and sacked four more. R.J. Butler scored on a two yard run, Lenehan hit A. Armstead on a five yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. Tyler McIntosh had five catches for 68 yards for Seton Hill, now 1-1 on the season.

Bridgewater 19 – St. Vincent 14
Sheldon Loughner caught two touchdown passes, but a Tyler Beiler 80 yard kickoff return for a touchdown sealed the deal as Bridgewater picked up the win at Chuck Noll Field. Darren McKenzie added a 55 yard scoring run for the Eagles. Thomas Tate gained 111 yards on 25 carries for Bridgewater. St. Vincent will travel to the state of New York next Saturday to face Farleigh Dickinson-Florham. The Bearcats have lost 19 consecutive games.

Westminster 23 – Hiram 6
The Titans scored 23 unanswered points to pick up the road win. Sophomore running back John Proano ran for 123 yards on 13 carries and a touchdown to lead the Westminster rushing attack. Hiram jumped out to the lead on two field goals from Luke Russo. Trevor Young kicked a 33 yarder to put Westminster on the board in the second quarter. Shawn Lehocky gave the Titans the lead with a two yard touchdown, he ran for 64 yards on the afternoon. In the third quarter, the Titan defense stopped Hiram twice from the one yard line, getting the ball on downs, as Jordan Rooney and Jake Brown made the stop on Rodney Jacobs. Rooney made a big play earlier, blocking a Hiram field goal attempt to end the half. Proano scored on a seven yard scamper and Kyle Allen returned an interception 33 yards for a touchdown to close the scoring. Westminster heads to Lycoming College next Saturday for a 1 pm kickoff.

Marietta 28 – Thiel 7
Marietta used the big play to secure the win at Alumni Stadium in Greenville. Andrew Keller scored on a 55 yard run and threw a 70 yard touchdown pass to Jahmaal Jones. Joe Williams and Robert Brown both added Pick 6's in the second half. Ross Gargano scored on a three yard run for the Tomcats, who threw five interceptions on the afternoon. Thiel travels to Widener next Saturday.

Allegheny 28 – Bethany 0
T.J. Salopek was 19 of 28 for 207 yards and four touchdowns as the Gators win their first of the season. Terry Hartford had six catches, two for touchdowns for Allegheny. Eric Walker led the way for the Bisons with 73 yards on 18 carries.

Carnegie Mellon 28 – Grove City 21
Grove City had the advantage in every offensive category except the scoreboard as the Tartans gained the win at Robert E. Thorn Field. Wolverine quarterback Clayton Hall ran for 228 yards, he also threw for 134 and two scores. Jake Nardone put CMU on the board first with a 54 yard run in the opening quarter. Ed Reith answered for Grove City with a 32 yard run to knot the game at seven. Patrick Blanks gave the Tartans back the lead with his five yard touchdown run late in the quarter. The score stayed 14-7 until the third quarter, when Hall scored 39 yards on a keeper to tie the game. Freshman Rob Kalkstein hit Chris Garcia with a 29 yard touchdown pass to give CMU back the lead. Grove City fumbled the kickoff, setting up a short field and Justin Pratt scored six plays later from a yard out to put CMU up 28-14. Hall added a 23 yard run early in the fourth to close the scoring. With the 228 yards rushing, Hall set a new mark for Wolverine quarterbacks. Luke O'Hara, the Wolverines' leading receiver last season was held to just two catches.
